Automatic Code Homework Grading Based On Concept Extraction, I. Alhami, Izzat Alsmadi

Computer Science Faculty Publications

E-learning is taking more roles in the current methods of education. The automatic grading and assessment play a major role in both e-learning and traditional education as a method to reduce educational expenses and relief instructors from some of the lengthy tasks such as grading. In this paper, automatic grading for software code assignments or homework is described. A tool is developed to automatically grade students' code assignments. Concepts or code from Students' answers are first parsed. Key abstractions and keywords are extracted from students' assignments and compared with typical or expected answers. Weights are given to code keywords by …

Activities And Trends In Testing Graphical User Interfaces Automatically, Izzat M. Alsmadi

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This study introduced some new approaches for software test automation in general and testing graphical user interfaces in particular. The study presented ideas in the different stages of the test automation framework. Test automation framework main activities include test case generation, execution and verification. Other umbrella activities include modeling, critical paths selection and some others. In modeling, a methodology is presented to transform the user interface of applications into XML (i.e., extensible Markup Language) files. The purpose of this intermediate transformation is to enable producing test automation components in a format that is easier to deal with (in terms of …

Suppression Of Away-Side Jet Fragments With Respect To The Reaction Plane In Au + Au Collisions At √Snn=200 Gev, Andrew Marshall Adare, Gyöngyi Baksay, László A. Baksay, Szabolcs Rembeczki, Marcus Hohlmann Jan 2011

Suppression Of Away-Side Jet Fragments With Respect To The Reaction Plane In Au + Au Collisions At √Snn=200 Gev, Andrew Marshall Adare, Gyöngyi Baksay, László A. Baksay, Szabolcs Rembeczki, Marcus Hohlmann

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Pair correlations between large transverse momentum neutral pion triggers (pT=4 - 7 GeV/c) and charged hadron partners (pT=3 - 7 GeV/c) in central (0%-20%) and midcentral (20%-60%) Au+Au collisions at √sNN=200 GeV are presented as a function of trigger orientation with respect to the reaction plane. The particles are at larger momentum than where jet shape modifications have been observed, and the correlations are sensitive to the energy loss of partons traveling through hot dense matter. An out-of-plane trigger particle produces only 26±20% of the away-side pairs that are observed opposite of an in-plane trigger particle for midcentral (20%-60%) collisions. …

Low-Energy Electron Production By Relativistic Runaway Electron Avalanches In Air, Joseph R. Dwyer, Leonid P. Babich Jan 2011

Low-Energy Electron Production By Relativistic Runaway Electron Avalanches In Air, Joseph R. Dwyer, Leonid P. Babich

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the production of low-energy (few eV) electrons by relativistic runaway electron avalanches. This work is motivated by a growing body of literature that claims that runaway electron avalanches produce an anomalous growth of low-energy electrons and hence an anomalously large electrical conductivity, a factor of 50 larger than expected from standard calculations. Such large enhancements would have a substantial impact on properties of runaway electron avalanches and their observable effects. Indeed, these purportedly large conductivities have been used to argue that runaway electron avalanches result in a novel form of electrical breakdown called "runaway breakdown." In this …

The Period And Amplitude Changes In The Coolest Gw Virginis Variable Star (Pg 1159-Type) Pg 0122+200, Gérard P. Vauclair, Jianning Fu, Jan Erik Solheim, Seunglee Kim, Noël Dolez, M Chevreton, Li Chen, Matt A. Wood, Isaac M. Silver, Zs Bognár, Margit Paparó, Alejandro H. Córsico

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Context: The PG 1159 pre-white dwarf stars experiment a rapidly cooling phase with a time scale of a few 106 years. Theoretical models predict that the neutrinos produced in their core should play a dominant role in the cooling, mainly at the cool end of the PG 1159 sequence. Measuring the evolutionary time scale of the coolest PG 1159 stars could offer a unique opportunity to empirically constrain the neutrino emission rate. Aims. A subgroup of the PG 1159 stars are nonradial pulsators, the GW Vir type of variable stars. They exhibit g-mode pulsations with periods of a few hundred …

Measurement Of The Drell-Yan Cross Section In Pp Collisions At √S = 7 Tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration Jan 2011

Measurement Of The Drell-Yan Cross Section In Pp Collisions At √S = 7 Tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The Drell-Yan differential cross section is measured in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV, from a data sample collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb−1. The cross section measurement, normalized to the measured cross section in the Z region, is reported for both the dimuon and dielectron channels in the dilepton invariant mass range 15–600 GeV. The normalized cross section values are quoted both in the full phase space and within the detector acceptance. The effect of final state radiation is also identified. The results are found to agree with …

Search For Resonances In The Dilepton Mass Distribution In Pp Collisions At √S = 7tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Samir Guragain, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Robert M. Ralich, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration Jan 2011

Search For Resonances In The Dilepton Mass Distribution In Pp Collisions At √S = 7tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Samir Guragain, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Robert M. Ralich, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

A search for narrow resonances at high mass in the dimuon and dielectron channels has been performed by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, using pp collision data recorded at √s = 7 TeV. The event samples correspond to integrated luminosities of 40 pb−1 in the dimuon channel and 35 pb−1 in the dielectron channel. Heavy dilepton resonances are predicted in theoretical models with extra gauge bosons (Z′) or as Kaluza-Klein graviton excitations (GKK) in the Randall-Sundrum model. Upper limits on the inclusive cross section of Z′(GKK) → ℓ+ℓ− relative to Z → ℓ+ℓ− are presented. These limits exclude …

Novel Optical Remote Sensing Technology For Prediction Of Harmful Algal Blooms, Elizabeth Tobin Jan 2011

Novel Optical Remote Sensing Technology For Prediction Of Harmful Algal Blooms, Elizabeth Tobin

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are outbreaks of planktonic algae that threaten public health, degrade aquatic ecosystems and cause major economic losses. Most HABs are detected only after they reach an advanced stage, when they have already caused significant ecological and economic damage. However, many HAB-forming species have two distinct life stages, a dormant benthic stage and a vegetative pelagic stage. The primary objective of this project was to construct and test a prototype of an autonomous optical sensor for the detection and characterization of HAB-forming algae as they emerge from the sediments.

The Rarity Of Terrestrial Gamma-Ray Flashes, D. M. Smith, Michael E. Splitt, Steven M. Lazarus, W. Ulrich, Jospeh R. Dwyer Jan 2011

The Rarity Of Terrestrial Gamma-Ray Flashes, D. M. Smith, Michael E. Splitt, Steven M. Lazarus, W. Ulrich, Jospeh R. Dwyer

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We report on the first search for Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) from altitudes where they are thought to be produced. The Airborne Detector for Energetic Lightning Emissions (ADELE), an array of gamma-ray detectors, was flown near the tops of Florida thunderstorms in August/September 2009. The plane passed within 10 km horizontal distance of 1213 lightning discharges and only once detected a TGF. If these discharges had produced TGFs of the same intensity as those seen from space, every one should have been seen by ADELE. Separate and significant nondetections are established for intracloud lightning, negative cloud-to-ground lightning, and narrow bipolar …

Charged Particle Transverse Momentum Spectra In Pp Collisions At √S = 0:9 And 7 Tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Samir Guragain, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Robert M. Ralich, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration Jan 2011

Charged Particle Transverse Momentum Spectra In Pp Collisions At √S = 0:9 And 7 Tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Samir Guragain, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Robert M. Ralich, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The charged particle transverse momentum (pT) spectra are presented for pp collisions at √s = 0.9 and 7 TeV. The data samples were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to integrated luminosities of 231 μb−1 and 2.96 pb−1, respectively. Calorimeter-based high-transverse-energy triggers are employed to enhance the statistical reach of the high-pT measurements. The results are compared with leading and next-to-leading order QCD and with an empirical scaling of measurements at different collision energies using the scaling variable xT ≡ 2pT / √s over the pT range up to 200 GeV / c. Using a combination …

A measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry in inclusive pp → WX production at √s = 7 TeV is presented based on data recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb−1. This high precision measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry, performed in both the W → eν and W → μν channels, provides new insights into parton distribution functions.

The Linear Quadratic Tracker On Time Scales, Martin Bohner, Nick Wintz Jan 2011

The Linear Quadratic Tracker On Time Scales, Martin Bohner, Nick Wintz

Faculty Scholarship

In this work, we study a natural extension of the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) on time scales. Here, we unify and extend the Linear Quadratic Tracker (LQT). We seek to find an affine optimal control that minimizes a cost functional associated with a completely observable linear system. We then find an affine optimal control for the fixed final state case in terms of the current state. Finally we include an example in disturbance/rejection modelling. A numerical example is also included.

A Selection Of Hot Subluminous Stars In The Galex Survey – I. Correlation With The Guide Star Catalog, S. Vennes, A. Kawka, P. Nemeth Jan 2011

A Selection Of Hot Subluminous Stars In The Galex Survey – I. Correlation With The Guide Star Catalog, S. Vennes, A. Kawka, P. Nemeth

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We assembled a catalogue of bright, hot subdwarf and white dwarf stars extracted from a joint ultraviolet, optical and infrared source list. The selection is secured using colour criteria that correlate well with effective temperatures Teff≳ 12 000 K. We built a NUVV versus VJ diagram for ≳60 000 bright sources using the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) NUV magnitude (NUV < 14), the associated Guide Star Catalog (GSC2.3.2) photographic quick-V magnitude and the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey J and H magnitudes. This distillation process delivered a catalogue of ≈700 sources with NUVV < 0.5 comprising ∼160 known hot subdwarf stars and another ∼60 known white dwarf stars. A reduced proper-motion diagram built using the proper-motion measurements extracted from the Naval Observatory Merged Astrometric Dataset allowed us to identify an additional ∼120 new hot subdwarf candidates and ∼10 hot white dwarf candidates. We present a spectroscopic study of a subset of 52 subdwarfs, 48 of them analysed here for the first time, and with nine objects brighter than V ∼ 12. …

Transient Diffraction Grating Measurements Of Molecular Diffusion In The Undergraduate Laboratory, Daniel Spiegel, Santona Tuli Jan 2011

Transient Diffraction Grating Measurements Of Molecular Diffusion In The Undergraduate Laboratory, Daniel Spiegel, Santona Tuli

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research

Mass diffusion is a central process in many biological, chemical, and physical systems, and although the mathematics of diffusion has long been an important component of an undergraduate physics education, experimental measurements of diffusion are not very common in the undergraduate laboratory. We describe here an experiment that employs the interference of laser beams to allow measurement of molecular diffusion on micron length scales. The interference fringes of two intersecting “pump” beams within a dye solution create a sinusoidal distribution of long-lived molecular excited states. A third “probe” beam is incident at a wavelength at which the indices of refraction …

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Distance and real-time data monitoring are the necessary condition that makes any system in good working order. Recent advancements in micro-electronics and wireless technology enable the application of wireless sensors in both industry and wild environments. However, Long-distance wireless communication has several drawbacks like limited bandwidth, considerable costs and unstable connection quality. Therefore, Power Line Communication (PLC) using pre-established Power Lines (PL) becomes more attractive for high data transmission technology. This paper reviews the existing distance data monitoring systems and presents a case study for data transferring of temperature and heart beat measurement. The simulations were carried out on the …

We describe a method of evaluating systematic errors in measurements of total column dry-air mole fractions of CO2 (XCO2) from space, and we illustrate the method by applying it to the v2.8 Atmospheric CO2 Observations from Space retrievals of the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (ACOS-GOSAT) measurements over land. The approach exploits the lack of large gradients in XCO2 south of 25S to identify large-scale offsets and other biases in the ACOS-GOSAT data with several retrieval parameters and errors in instrument calibration. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method by comparing the ACOS-GOSAT data …

Disaster Communication Governance And Public Trust: The Case Of Tepco, Akemi Takeoka Chatfield, Mary Barrett

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The International Risk Governance Council (IRGC) Risk Governance Framework identifies five inter-dependent phases, of which the final phase, Communication, is of the utmost importance because effective communication is the key to creating public trust in disaster risk management. Extant government reports on the 2005 Hurricane Katrina and the 2009 Victoria bushfires in Australia (2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission 2010) provide evidence that disaster communication governance deficits contribute to the slow disaster response and recovery operations and the erosion of public trust in government disaster management.

This paper summarises the current research on the use of microsimulation and its use for understanding behaviour in modelling threat in society. The motivation for this project was to develop simulation tools that could be used to model human behaviour and overlay that behaviour with a full spectrum of threats to understand how alternative ways for undertaking prevention, protection and response could be used to reduce the risk from a threat. The basic simulation engine - Simulacron, and its associated modules are briefly described. A number of applications to biological infection, including single vector infectious disease spread, biological weapon placement …

Application Of Microsimulation Towards Modelling Of Behaviours In Complex Environments, Daniel Keep, Rachel Bunder, Ian Piper, Anthony Green Jan 2011

Application Of Microsimulation Towards Modelling Of Behaviours In Complex Environments, Daniel Keep, Rachel Bunder, Ian Piper, Anthony Green

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

In this paper, we introduce new capabilities to our existing microsimulation framework, Simulacron. These new capabilities add the modelling of behaviours based on motivations and improve our existing non-deterministic movement capacity. We then discuss the application of these new features to a simple, synthetic, proof of concept, scenario involving the transit of people through a corridor and how an induced panic affects their throughput. Finally we describe a more complex scenario, which is currently under development, involving the detonation of an explosive device in a major metropolitan transport hub at peak hour and the analysis of subsequent reaction.

Theory Of Gaussian Variational Approximation For A Poisson Mixed Model, Peter Hall, J T. Ormerod, M P. Wand

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Likelihood-based inference for the parameters of generalized linear mixed models is hindered by the presence of intractable integrals. Gaussian variational approximation provides a fast and effective means of approximate inference. We provide some theory for this type of approximation for a simple Poisson mixed model. In particular, we establish consistency at rate m−1/2 +n−1, where m is the number of groups and n is the number of repeated measurements.

In this paper we present an approach to the modelling of human interaction in complex environments and its application to a security related scenario; the evacuation of a railway station subsequent to the detonation of an improvised explosive device. The intent of the experiments reported in this paper is to investigate the application of our existing software capabilities to the proof-of-concept scenario described above. Our simulation framework, Simulacron, allows the development of multiple interacting modules which address matters such as motivation, scheduling and movement, controlled both by internal goals and external influences. The ability to integrate this interaction modelling with our …

Editorial: The Social And Behavioural Implications Of Location-Based Services, Katina Michael, M G. Michael

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The social and behavioral implications of location-based services (LBS) are only now beginning to come to light in advanced markets where the services have been adopted by just a little over half the market (Microsoft 2011). Depending on one's definition of what constitutes location-based services, statistics on the level of adoption differ considerably. While it is helpful to provide as broad a list of applications as possible in what constitutes LBS (e.g. everything from in-vehicle navigation systems to downloading a map using a computer), it can also cloud the real picture forming behind this emerging technology. Emerging not in the …

Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430 CE) [1] one of the most revered doctors of the ecclesia catholica, might not have been so highly esteemed had he fl ourished centuries afterwards in a world of uberveillance [2]. One of the unique aspects of Augustine's life that endeared him to the community of the faithful, both past and present, was his rising up from the "fornications" [3] and the "delight in thievery" [4] to become a paradigm for both the eastern and western churches of the penitent who becomes a saint.
