Real-Time Stealth Intervention For Motor Learning Using Player Flow-State, Ramin Tadayon, Ashish Amresh, Troy Mcdaniel, Sethuraman Panchanathan Jun 2019

Real-Time Stealth Intervention For Motor Learning Using Player Flow-State, Ramin Tadayon, Ashish Amresh, Troy Mcdaniel, Sethuraman Panchanathan

Ashish Amresh

We present a novel approach to real-time adaptation in serious games for at-home motor learning. Our approach assesses and responds to the “flow-state” of players by tracking and classifying facial emotions in real-time using the Kinect camera. Three different approaches for stealth assessment and adaptation using performance and flow-state data are defined, along with a case-study evaluation of these approaches based on their effectiveness at maintaining positive affective interaction in a subject.

Real-Time Rfi Mitigation In Radio Astronomy, Emily Ramey, Nick Joslyn, Richard Prestage, Michael Lam, Luke Hawkins, Tim Blattner, Mark Whitehead May 2019

Real-Time Rfi Mitigation In Radio Astronomy, Emily Ramey, Nick Joslyn, Richard Prestage, Michael Lam, Luke Hawkins, Tim Blattner, Mark Whitehead

Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses

As the use of wireless technology has increased around the world, Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) has become more and more of a problem for radio astronomers. Preventative measures exist to limit the presence of RFI, and programs exist to remove it from saved data, but the use of algorithms to detect and remove RFI as an observation is occurring is much less common. Such a method would be incredibly useful for observations in which the data must undergo several rounds of processing before being saved, as in pulsar timing studies. Strategies for real-time mitigation have been discussed and tested with ...

Stability Analysis Of A More General Class Of Systems With Delay-Dependent Coefficients, Chi Jin, Keqin Gu, Islam Boussaada, Silviu-Iulian Niculescu May 2019

Stability Analysis Of A More General Class Of Systems With Delay-Dependent Coefficients, Chi Jin, Keqin Gu, Islam Boussaada, Silviu-Iulian Niculescu

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This paper presents a systematic method to analyse the stability of systems with single delay in which the coefficient polynomials of the characteristic equation depend on the delay. Such systems often arise in, for example, life science and engineering systems. A method to analyze such systems was presented by Beretta and Kuang in a 2002 paper, but with some very restrictive assumptions. This work extends their results to the general case with the exception of some degenerate cases. It is found that a much richer behavior is possible when the restrictive assumptions are removed. The interval of interest for the ...

Generative Linguistics And Neural Networks At 60: Foundation, Friction, And Fusion, Joe Pater Feb 2019

Generative Linguistics And Neural Networks At 60: Foundation, Friction, And Fusion, Joe Pater

Joe Pater

The birthdate of both generative linguistics and neural networks can be taken as 1957, the year of the publication of foundational work by both Noam Chomsky and Frank Rosenblatt. This paper traces the development of these two approaches to cognitive science, from their largely autonomous early development in their first thirty years, through their collision in the 1980s around the past tense debate (Rumelhart and McClelland 1986, Pinker and Prince 1988), and their integration in much subsequent work up to the present. Although this integration has produced a considerable body of results, the continued general gulf between these two lines ...

A Demonstration Of The Infrared Activity Of Carbon Dioxide, Philip Sieg, William Berner, Peter Harnish, Philip C. Nelson Jan 2019

A Demonstration Of The Infrared Activity Of Carbon Dioxide, Philip Sieg, William Berner, Peter Harnish, Philip C. Nelson

Department of Physics Papers

Before they can talk meaningfully about anthropogenic climate change, students need to grasp basic principles of natural planetary climates, for example, the key role of trace atmospheric gases in setting surface temperature. We describe a dramatic demonstration that scales well for large audiences and that requires as little as ten classroom minutes to show the crucial difference between room air and carbon dioxide gas. Beyond its significance for public policy, the demonstration can serve as a springboard to motivate discussion of important physics concepts such as rotation and vibration spectra.

Comparing Dietary Differences Among The Hornless Artiodactyl Ruminants Hypertragulus, Hypisodus, And Leptomeryx From The Early Oligocene (Orellan) Brule Formation, Toadstool Geologic Park, Nebraska, Holly Chien Seyler

Museum and Field Studies Graduate Theses & Dissertations

The Early Oligocene (Orellan) in the North American Western Interior is marked by a cooler and dryer climate than the late Eocene (Chadronian). New mammalian taxa appeared while other groups already present began to diversify. This study takes a closer look at the diversification of hornless ruminant artiodactyls present in the Latest Orellan Merycoidodon bullatus Interval Zone through an analysis of 70 specimens from three closely related species: Hypertragulus (27), Hypisodus (18), and Leptomeryx (25) from a single locality in Toadstool Geologic Park, Nebraska. Specifically, we took a closer look at the hypsodonty index, mesowear, and tooth volume, which have ...

Palladium Complexes Bearing Κ²-N,N And Κ³-N,N,O Pendant Amine Bis(Phenolate) Ligands, Brendan J. Graziano, Eric M. Collins, Nathaniel C. Mccutcheon, Claire L. Griffith, Nicole M. Braunscheidel, Trilisa M. Perrine, Bradley M. Wile

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

The synthesis and characterization of ten new palladium(II) amine bis(phenolate) complexes is reported. Solution and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal the presence of both κ2-N,N and κ3-N,N,O binding modes in these square planar complexes. For complexes with sterically less demanding phenolate donors, addition of external acidic or basic reagents allows for the selective masking of a coordination site at Pd. Complexes bearing bulky cumyl substituents on phenolate donors exhibited unusual 1H NMR spectroscopic features that are consistent with an anagostic interaction with the palladium center. Computational analysis at the ωB97X-D ...

High Resolution Spatial Variability In Spring Snowmelt For An Arctic Shrub-Tundra Watershed, Branden J. Walker, Philip Marsh Dr Jan 2019

High Resolution Spatial Variability In Spring Snowmelt For An Arctic Shrub-Tundra Watershed, Branden J. Walker, Philip Marsh Dr

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Arctic tundra environments are characterized by spatially heterogeneous end-of-winter snow cover because of high winds that erode, transport and deposit snow over the winter. This spatially variable end-of-winter snow cover subsequently influences the spatial and temporal variability of snowmelt and results in a patchy snowcover over the melt period. Documenting changes in both snow cover area (SCA) and snow water equivalent (SWE) during the spring melt is essential for understanding hydrological systems, but the lack of high-resolution SCA and SWE datasets that accurately capture micro-scale changes are not commonly available, and do not exist for the Canadian Arctic. This study ...

Planting Date, Hybrid Maturity, And Weather Effects On Maize Yield And Crop Stage, M. E. Baum, S. V. Archontoulis, M. A. Licht Jan 2019

Planting Date, Hybrid Maturity, And Weather Effects On Maize Yield And Crop Stage, M. E. Baum, S. V. Archontoulis, M. A. Licht

Agronomy Publications

Unfavorable weather conditions frequently cause farmers to plant maize (Zea mays L.) outside the optimum planting timeframe. We analyzed maize yield and phenology from a multilocation, year, hybrid relative maturity, and planting date experiment performed in Iowa, USA. Our objectives were to determine the optimum combination of planting date and relative maturity to maximize maize grain yield per environment and to elucidate the risk associated with the use of “full-season hybrids” when planting occurs beyond the optimum planting date. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) attributed 70% of the variability in grain yield to planting date and only 10% to relative maturity ...
