Reading comprehension is an essential skill. It is unclear whether and to what degree typography and font personalization may impact reading comprehension in younger readers. With advancements in technology, it is now feasible to personalize digital reading formats in general technology tools, but this feature is not yet available for many educational tools. The current study aimed to investigate the effect of character width and inter-letter spacing on reading speed and comprehension. We enrolled 94 children (kindergarten–8th grade) and compared performance with six font variations on a word-level semantic decision task (Experiment 1) and a passage-level comprehension task (Experiment 2). …
Intrusion Detection: Machine Learning Techniques For Software Defined Networks, Jacob S. Rodriguez
Intrusion Detection: Machine Learning Techniques For Software Defined Networks, Jacob S. Rodriguez
Masters Theses
In recent years, software defined networking (SDN) has gained popularity as a novel approach towards network management and architecture. Compared to traditional network architectures, this software-based approach offers greater flexibility, programmability, and automation. However, despite the advantages of this system, there still remains the possibility that it could be compromised. As we continue to explore new approaches to network management, we must also develop new ways of protecting those systems from threats. Throughout this paper, I will describe and test a network intrusion detection system (NIDS), and how it can be implemented within a software defined network. This system will …

Institutional authority and responsibility for allocating water to ecosystems (“ecologically available water” [EAW]) is spread across local, state, and federal agencies, which operate under a range of statutes, mandates, and planning processes. We use a case study of the Upper Missouri Headwaters Basin in southwestern Montana, United States, to illustrate this fragmented institutional landscape. Our goals are to (a) describe the patchwork of agencies and institutional actors whose intersecting authorities and actions influence the EAW in the study basin; (b) describe the range of governance mechanisms these agencies use, including laws, policies, administrative programs, and planning processes; and (c) assess …
Hellings And Downs Correlation Of An Arbitrary Set Of Pulsars, Bruce Allen, Joseph D. Romano
Hellings And Downs Correlation Of An Arbitrary Set Of Pulsars, Bruce Allen, Joseph D. Romano
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) detect gravitational waves (GWs) via the correlations they induce in the arrival times of pulses from different pulsars. We assume that the GWs are described by a Gaussian ensemble, which models the confusion noise produced by expected PTA sources. The mean correlation h2μu(γ) as a function of the angle γ between the directions to two pulsars was predicted by Hellings and Downs in 1983. The variance σ2tot(γ) in this correlation was recently calculated [B. Allen, Variance of the Hellings-Downs correlation, Phys. Rev. D 107, 043018 (2023)] for a single noise-free pulsar pair at angle γ, …

Being an all-in-one gadget, smartphones play a vital role in our everyday lives. However, millions of people suffer every year by losing their phones. A lost phone creates a huge security threat and data loss possibility to the users. Some preventive measures are available to protect from unauthorized access. Moreover, there are some post-loss solutions to track down, retrieve data from a lost locked phone, and protect the privacy and security of lost phone data, but those have some drawbacks as well. Considering the situation, our proposed system offers a preventive solution which will protect the smartphones from getting lost. …

Finite Charges From The Bulk Action, Robert Mcnees, Céline Zwikel
Finite Charges From The Bulk Action, Robert Mcnees, Céline Zwikel
Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Constructing charges in the covariant phase space formalism often leads to formally divergent expressions, even when the fields satisfy physically acceptable fall-off conditions. These expressions can be rendered finite by corner ambiguities in the definition of the presymplectic potential, which in some cases may be motivated by arguments involving boundary Lagrangians. We show that the necessary corner terms are already present in the variation of the bulk action and can be extracted in a straightforward way. Once these corner terms are included in the presymplectic potential, charges derived from an associated codimension-2 form are automatically finite. We illustrate the procedure …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We present the first parton-level study of anomalous effects in triboson production in both fully and semi-leptonic channels in proton-proton collisions at 13TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The sensitivity to anomalies induced by a minimal set of bosonic dimension-6 operators from the Warsaw basis is evaluated with specific analyses for each final state. A likelihood-based strategy is employed to assess the most sensitive kinematic observables per channel, where the contribution of Effective Field Theory operators is parameterized at either the linear or quadratic level. The impact of the mutual interference terms of pairs of operators on the sensitivity …

A Search For Decays Of The Higgs Boson To Invisible Particles In Events With A Top-Antitop Quark Pair Or A Vector Boson In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, Armen R. Tumasyan
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
The first search for nonresonant production of Higgs boson pairs (HH) with one H decaying into four leptons and the other into a pair of b quarks is presented, using proton-proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. A 95% confidence level upper limit of 32.4 is set on the signal strength modifier μ, defined as the ratio of the observed HH production rate in the HH → ZZ*bb → 4ℓbb decay channel to the standard model …

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with highly toxic compounds mainly exist in small-sized particles and can induce considerable human health risks. Studies on PM2.5-bound PAHs and their source-specific human health risks still remain scarce. Daily PM2.5 samples (n = 119) were collected every three days from 2016 to 2017 in Taipei city, Taiwan. Fifteen PAHs in PM2.5 were analyzed via gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS-MS). We utilized a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, diagnostic ratios, and potential source contribution function (PSCF) to identify the origins of PM2.5-bound PAHs. The annual concentration of total PAHs (TPAH) was 0.79 ± 0.67 ng …

Euler Archive Spotlight: Translations Of Euler's Works To Languages Other Than English, Michael P. Saclolo
Euleriana
The Euler Archive is home to almost all of Euler’s original publications and roughly a quarter of them have accompanying translations to English. A small number of Euler’s works also have translations to a handful of other languages, namely, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Turkish that are available in the archive. We put a spotlight on these non-English translations in this issue.

Euler’S Variational Approach To The Elastica, Sylvio R. Bistafa
Euler’S Variational Approach To The Elastica, Sylvio R. Bistafa
Euleriana
The history of the elastica is examined through the works of various contributors, including those of Jacob and Daniel Bernoulli, since its first appearance in a 1690 contest on finding the profile of a hanging flexible cord. Emphasis will be given to Leonhard Euler’s variational approach to the elastica, laid out in his landmark 1744 book on variational techniques. Euler’s variational approach based on the concept of differential value is highlighted, including the derivation of the general equation for the elastica from the differential value of the first kind, from which nine shapes adopted by a flexed lamina under different …
Euler’S First Proof Of Stirling’S Formula, Alexander Aycock
Euler’S First Proof Of Stirling’S Formula, Alexander Aycock
Euleriana
We present a proof given by Euler in his paper “De serierum determinatione
seu nova methodus inveniendi terminos generales serierum” [4] (E189:“On
the determination of series or a new method of finding the general terms
of series”) for Stirling’s formula. Euler’s proof uses his theory of difference
equations with constant coefficients. This theory outgrew from his ear-
lier considerations on inhomogeneous differential equations with constant
coefficients of finite order that he tried to extend to the case of infinite
order.
On Euler's Solution Of The Simple Difference Equation, Alexander Aycock
On Euler's Solution Of The Simple Difference Equation, Alexander Aycock
Euleriana
In this note we will discuss Euler's solution of the simple difference equation that he gave in his paper{\it ``De serierum determinatione seu nova methodus inveniendi terminos generales serierum"} \cite{E189} (E189:``On the determination of series or a new method of finding the general terms of series") and also present a derivation for the values of the Riemann $\zeta$-function at positive integer numbers based on Euler's ideas.
Euler And The Legendre Polynomials, Alexander Aycock
Euler And The Legendre Polynomials, Alexander Aycock
Euleriana
In this note we will present how Euler's investigations on various different subjects lead to certain properties of the Legendre polynomials. More precisely, we will show that the generating function and the difference equation for the Legendre polynomials was already written down by Euler in at least two different papers. Furthermore, we will demonstrate that some familiar expressions for the Legendre polynomials are corollaries of the before-mentioned works. Finally, we will show that Euler's ideas on continued fractions lead to an integral representation for the Legendre polynomials that seems to be less generally known.
Solution Of The Diophantine Equation (Maa+Nbb)=Cd(Mcc+Ndd) Using Rational Numbers, Georg Ehlers
Solution Of The Diophantine Equation (Maa+Nbb)=Cd(Mcc+Ndd) Using Rational Numbers, Georg Ehlers
Euleriana
This paper (E716) was published in Nova acta Academiae scientiarum imperialis petropolitanae, Volume 13 (1795/96), pp. 45-63. It was also included in Commentationes Arithmeticae, Volume II, as Number LXVIII, pp. 281-293 (E791). Euler starts with Fermat's Last Theorem and mentions the proofs for the cases n=3 and n=4 which he had completed himself earlier. He then moves on to make the sum of powers conjecture, which was later disproved in the second half of the 20th century. In this context he discusses his discovery of 134^4+133^4=158^4+59^4, which he calls unexpected. Euler derives the title equation from A^4+B^4=C^4+D^4, generalizing it to …
On The Motion Of The Nodes Of The Moon And The Variation Of Its Inclination To The Ecliptic (An English Translation Of De Motu Nodorum Lunae Eiusque Inclinationis Ad Eclipticam Variatione), Patrick T. Headley
Euleriana
In this paper Euler attempts to explain some features of the motion of the Moon using Newton’s inverse-square law of gravity. He describes the evidence in favor of Newton’s theory but also the lack of progress in the study of lunar motion due to the difficulty of the three-body problem, arising here since both the Sun and the Earth have large effects on the Moon. He proceeds to investigate the line of intersection between the planes of the Earth's orbit and the Moon's orbit, as well as the angle between the two planes.

Connectome-Constrained Artificial Neural Networks, Jacob Morra
Connectome-Constrained Artificial Neural Networks, Jacob Morra
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In biological neural networks (BNNs), structure provides a set of guard rails by which function is constrained to solve tasks effectively, handle multiple stimuli simultaneously, adapt to noise and input variations, and preserve energy expenditure. Such features are desirable for artificial neural networks (ANNs), which are, unlike their organic counterparts, practically unbounded, and in many cases, initialized with random weights or arbitrary structural elements. In this dissertation, we consider an inductive base case for imposing BNN constraints onto ANNs. We select explicit connectome topologies from the fruit fly (one of the smallest BNNs) and impose these onto a multilayer perceptron …
Online Data Transmission Reduction Scheme For Energy Conservation In Wireless Video Sensor Networks, Iman Kadhum Abbood, Ali Kadhum Idrees
Online Data Transmission Reduction Scheme For Energy Conservation In Wireless Video Sensor Networks, Iman Kadhum Abbood, Ali Kadhum Idrees
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Wireless Video Sensor Networks (WVSNs) are networks of low-cost, low-power camera sensor nodes. These nodes communicate locally and process information to meet an application's goal. WVSNs are extensively used in diverse monitoring applications, such as security, military, industrial, medical, and environmental monitoring. However, the transmission of large amounts of data collected by video sensor nodes in WVSNs poses challenges in terms of energy consumption, bandwidth usage, and network congestion. Reducing energy for processing and transmitting data in WVSNs is difficult due to the huge amount of sensed data in real-time. To address this issue, this paper proposes an Online Data …

Predicting Network Failures With Ai Techniques, Chandrika Saha
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Network failure is the unintentional interruption of internet services, resulting in widespread client frustration. It is especially true for time-sensitive services in the healthcare industry, smart grid control, and mobility control, among others. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has compelled many businesses to operate remotely, making uninterrupted internet access essential. Moreover, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) lose millions of dollars annually due to network failure, which has a negative impact on their businesses. Currently, redundant network equipment is used as a restoration technique to resolve this issue of network failure. This technique requires a strategy for failure identification and prediction to …

Predictive Model Of Seismic Vibrations’ Peak Value Induced By Multi-Face Blasting, Krzysztof Fuławka, Lech Stolecki, Piotr Mertuszka, Marcin Szumny, Arkadiusz Anderko
Journal of Sustainable Mining
The seismicity level induced by blasting in the Polish copper mines is very important inlight of the efficiency of active rockburst prevention and safe conduct of blasting operations in the vicinity of the mining infrastructure such as shafts, workings, or function chambers (e.g., workshops, storages, etc.). Knowledge of the seismic vibrations’ peak value might be the basis for designing blasting works in a way that ensures desired seismic effect. However, current experiences show that Peak Particle Velocity prediction models developed so far do not apply to multi-face blasting, where there are many vibrations’ sources at the same time dotted across …

Undergraduate Students' Conceptions Of Ngss Science And Engineering Practices, Jessie Webb
Theses and Dissertations
In 2013, a new set of science standards was introduced for K-12 science education, called the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which focused on three dimensions of science learning that work together: disciplinary core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and science and engineering practices. These standards are novel in their emphasis on students needing more than only content knowledge to learn science and engineering. The NGSS science and engineering practices (SEPs) stress the importance of students engaging in the authentic practices of scientists and engineers to help them think like a scientist, practice science themselves, and overcome the misconception that science is …
