Other Oceans, Other Skies, Sharlene Lee 2023 Washington University in St. Louis

Other Oceans, Other Skies, Sharlene Lee

MFA in Visual Art

I create immersive installations, performances, and time-based media artworks that delve into stories of belonging, feminism, and language as power. These stories offer a potential for transformation from viewer to participant and a shift in how our world is seen and experienced. Through an exploration of perception and affect, I challenge dominant narratives, prompting a contemplation of contemporary power struggles for control.

In this text, I examine the impact of historical borders and migration on my life while also investigating questions of home, shared values, and rituals that contribute to one’s sense of belonging. I also highlight my commitment to …

"Beowulf": Interpretation And Supplementation, Abigail Martin 2023 University of Mississippi

"Beowulf": Interpretation And Supplementation, Abigail Martin

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates the various ways in which Beowulf has been interpreted across time, explaining how factors, called paratexts, have played a large part in shaping these interpretations and how, especially in reading the Beowulf manuscript, we inherit the sum of these influences. In order to demonstrate this, I present a variety of arguments and perspectives on the text that have been developed by scholars over the years based on different types of paratexts (physical, intangible, and translational) in the absence of a known author. At each stage of Beowulf’s life, there have been opportunities for individuals with authority …

Forming A Global Citizen: Personal Development Through Study Abroad, Anna L. Reiter 2023 University of South Dakota

Forming A Global Citizen: Personal Development Through Study Abroad, Anna L. Reiter

Honors Thesis

This literature review examines key benefits of studying abroad, while investigating which elements most contribute to students’ overall success. Current literature suggests that benefits of studying abroad include, but are not limited to, second language acquisition (SLA), identity formation, and intercultural competence. The degree of which each is improved depends on a multitude of variables. SLA improvement is explored via consideration of students’ baseline proficiency level, degree of receptivity of the host country, and length of the study abroad program. Students’ identity formation is explained through the three bases of identity: person, role, and group/social. Finally, intercultural competence in study …

Decolonizing Chinese Literary And Cultural Studies In “World Literature”: Decolonial Translation And Magical-Traumatic Realism In Can Xue, Deanna Ren 2023 Washington University in St. Louis

Decolonizing Chinese Literary And Cultural Studies In “World Literature”: Decolonial Translation And Magical-Traumatic Realism In Can Xue, Deanna Ren

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study takes a genealogical and historicized approach to Mandarin-to-English translations, including my own, of Can Xue through neoliberal discourses of “world literature.” I ground these Anglophone discourses in the legacies of Sinology, area studies and post-Cold War historiography. Arguing for the necessity of a decolonial translation practice in Mandarin-to-English translation, I propose magical-traumatic realism (an intersection of magical realism and traumatic realism) as an alternative lens with which to contextualize, decolonize and re-embody Can Xue’s works in both source and “world” contexts.

Translation As Process, Drew Gvillo, Justine Pas 2023 Lindenwood University

Translation As Process, Drew Gvillo, Justine Pas

2023 Student Academic Showcase

My poster presentation is an in-depth explanation and discussion of what translation of languages is. It defines what translation is and what performing a translation entails. It explains how there are many common misconceptions about translations and attempts to disprove them. This in-depth discussion of translation factors such as language identity, culture acceptance, political factors, and much more aid in explaining how translations can be used for good and for bad. Translations can be used to break language and cultural barriers but they can also be used to divide people. It is up to the translator and those in power …

Trending En Tiktok: El Cambio De Código Como Estrategia Discursiva; Trending On Tiktok: Code-Switching As A Discursive Strategy, Jessica Vrioni

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Language Services For Populations With Limited English Proficiency (Lep) And The Necessity For Proper Medical Interpretation With A Focus In South Carolina, Elizabeth Pung 2023 University of South Carolina - Columbia

Language Services For Populations With Limited English Proficiency (Lep) And The Necessity For Proper Medical Interpretation With A Focus In South Carolina, Elizabeth Pung

Senior Theses

Linguistically appropriate healthcare is a cornerstone of providing quality patient care. Provider-patient communication is imperative to achieving linguistically appropriate healthcare; unfortunately, language barriers introduced by different spoken languages of patients to their providers hinders this communication. Patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) are ensured accessible healthcare under federal regulations such as the National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS standards); however, a gap between patients with LEP and the healthcare system remains. Not only is there a gap in communication for patients with LEP to their providing physician, but there is a nationwide epidemic resulting in poor health …

Blind Luck: A Narrative Exploration Of French Sayings And Superstitions, Isabella North 2023 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Blind Luck: A Narrative Exploration Of French Sayings And Superstitions, Isabella North

Honors Theses

The goal of this Honors Thesis was to explore French superstitions and idioms through a fictional story. To facilitate the inclusion of a range of sayings and superstitious beliefs, the short story “Jamais Deux Sans Trois” is a borderline paranormal piece of fiction which is meant to call into question how the reader interprets the world. The story, written in French, revolves around a pair of best friends and their experiences with a series of events which may or may not be explained through the lens of superstitions, depending on which character is asked at which point in the story. …

Notes On The Translations Of Sūrat Al-Inshiqāq, Rema El-Isa 2023 Languages Center, Al al-Bayt University, Mafraq, Jordan.

Notes On The Translations Of Sūrat Al-Inshiqāq, Rema El-Isa

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

This paper conducts a comparative study about four translations of sūrat alInshiqāq: Yousef Ali, Muhammad Hilali-Muhsin Khan, Pickthall and Mohammad Abdel Haleem. Multiple opinions of exposition have been provided to explore how, in certain ayas, the translators fail to find an appropriate equivalent. The translations' problems are categorized into lexical, stylistic and syntactic problems, whereas these categories also have sub-categories in order to clarify the gaps that might be encountered while translating the Qur'anic text. The problems are investigated through the theories of free and bound translation. Since religious texts, especially the sacred ones, are contextbased, they have different meanings …

Whispers: Cognitive Process In Inter-Semiotic Translation, Yangzhou Bian 2023 Binghamton University

Whispers: Cognitive Process In Inter-Semiotic Translation, Yangzhou Bian

Theatre Student Scholarship

The research uses Whispers, a graduate student theater project as the case study to analyze the cognitive process of inter-semiotic translation from different media/semiotic pairs. The study adopts the Interpretive Theory of Translation proposed by Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer as a point of reference to examine artists' thought processes when translating across sign systems. Spontaneous reflection of the artists, retrospective interviews, and written statements of the artists used during the performance have been collected along with copies of the source and target media. The paper begins with an introduction to the Whispers and the Interpretive Model proposed by Seleskovitch …

Salty: A Diffractive Inquiry Of Visceral Knowing And Embodied Aesthetics, Mei Ling Chua 2023 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Salty: A Diffractive Inquiry Of Visceral Knowing And Embodied Aesthetics, Mei Ling Chua

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation takes a diffractive, onto-epistemological approach to everyday practices with salt in order to articulate an expanded understanding of meaning making and knowledge production. This research reckons with and challenges dominant modes of knowing that engage a Cartesian perspective to situate knowing as the exclusive domain of the mind in both form and topic of inquiry. This research acts simultaneously as both a direct practice of and metacognition about knowledge production by examining 1. the embodied (including sensory and emotional aspects) and 2. the relational (including interpersonal and socio-cultural) dimensions of experience as visceral knowing. This articulation of …

Towards An E-Learning Platform For Translator Training: Getting Stakeholders Involved, Mohammad Al-Batineh, Batol Muhaisen, Raidah Al-Ramadan 2023 Department of Translation, Yarmouk University, Irbid, Jordan.

Towards An E-Learning Platform For Translator Training: Getting Stakeholders Involved, Mohammad Al-Batineh, Batol Muhaisen, Raidah Al-Ramadan

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

The dynamic nature of the language industry and the current and future demands of the translation market have increased the need for integrating web-based collaborative learning and teamwork techniques into translation training classrooms. However, the absence of specialized eLearning platforms for translation training makes it difficult for translation trainers to execute collaborative translation tasks that mimic real-life situations. The present paper discusses online collaborative learning in translation classrooms and argues for involving translator training stakeholders in the process of designing and developing web-based collaborative learning tools for translator-training purposes. The paper proposes a software design workflow that can be followed by …

A Study Of Cranf 1927: Woo Kwang Kien And Translation-Cultural Capital, Lisu Wang

Living in Languages

Largely ignored by Gaskell scholars, the early Chinese translations of Gaskell’s works have not been carefully looked at. From 1920 to 1945, the publication of four stories by Gaskell-- Cranford, Cousin Phillis, Hand and Heart, and The Old Nurse’s Story, witnessed the transformation from politics-orientated to independence in China’s publishing history. With their growing understanding of foreign literature, Chinese scholars had been translating and criticizing Gaskell’s works, and gradually formed a focus on Cranford. It was not by accident that Cranford has received great popularity: there is no similar novella in contemporary Chinese literature that …

Babel Blackness: The Aesth-Ethical Turn In Post-Colonial Translation, Emanuela Maltese 2023 Charles University, Prague Czech Republic

Babel Blackness: The Aesth-Ethical Turn In Post-Colonial Translation, Emanuela Maltese

Living in Languages

“How do we make art in an ethical way?” (Marlene NourbeSe Philip) is the leading question lying at the basis of this article, which inspired by the story of the unauthorized Italian translation of Zong! seeks to investigate on the ethics of translation and propose a new turn in translation studies, namely a black aesth-ethical one. The proposal here examined is indeed informed by both aesthetics, and ethics. It presents translation as a practice, that draws on recent debates on black aesthetics, with specific reference to the Afro-optimism (AO) of cultural theorist and poet Fred Moten (2013, 2018, 2019) and …
