Sum Christiana: Perpetua's Patriarchy-Defeating Agency, Katherine McCarthy 2022 Macalester College

Sum Christiana: Perpetua's Patriarchy-Defeating Agency, Katherine Mccarthy

Religious Studies Honors Projects

The early Christian text, Passio sanctarum Perpetuae et Felicitatis, outlines the martyrdom of Vibia Perpetua and fellow catechumens in North Africa in 203 B.C. By looking at the original Latin text and contextualizing the story in its Carthiginian context and focusing on the words exchanged between Perpetua and her paterfamilias and the descriptions concerning them, this deeper analysis situates Perpetua’s agency. Perpetua inverts the role of the paterfamilias, which can be seen through her language choice. Moreover, Perpetua’s paterfamilias’ change in word choice reflects Perpetua’s ability to make her own choices in the male-dominated Roman society. Perpetua defies societal, gender, …

From Handmaids To Princesses: How Identity And Politics Impact Definitions Of Biblical Rape, Gabrielle R. Isaac-Herzog 2022 Macalester College

From Handmaids To Princesses: How Identity And Politics Impact Definitions Of Biblical Rape, Gabrielle R. Isaac-Herzog

Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects

The politics of sex in the Bible are complex. They are impacted and limited by the time of the stories, as well as the political landscape and laws of the region. However, since many modern religions have emerged from the text of the Hebrew Bible, it is important for scholars to continue the work of critically examining the texts in the contemporary context. This paper offers a textual analysis of several biblical stories through a feminist and decolonial lens. Through the generation of a taxonomy by which these stories can be categorized, this paper posits that the biblical definitions of …

"Je Vous Donne Toute Mon Âme" : Une Traduction De L'Intimité Féminine Dans Isidora De George Sand, Shelby M. Kruger 2022 Macalester College

"Je Vous Donne Toute Mon Âme" : Une Traduction De L'Intimité Féminine Dans Isidora De George Sand, Shelby M. Kruger

An Application Of Skopos Theory To German Literary Translation, Craig Nolan VanDemark 2022 Cedarville University

An Application Of Skopos Theory To German Literary Translation, Craig Nolan Vandemark

Linguistics Senior Research Projects

This project translated the German short story “Ein neues Paradies” by Hans Dominik using skopos theory in order to observe how the theory interacted with the text and to critique its application to literary translation. The skopos theory states that all translation decisions are to be made with respect to the skopos, or purpose, of the target text, intentionally deprioritizing faithfulness to the source text in the translation process. The skopos of the target text of this project was to produce a modern American English translation of the source text, that provides the reader with an understanding of the source …

Mephistopheles' Atopy, Allotry, Lottery. On Textual Proliferations In Goethe's Faust I And Ii, Pasqual Solass 2022 Brown University

Mephistopheles' Atopy, Allotry, Lottery. On Textual Proliferations In Goethe's Faust I And Ii, Pasqual Solass

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

Combining a careful reading of selected passages from Goethe’s Faust I and II and of marginal but nevertheless revealing lines on maybe the actual protagonist of the “Tragödie”, Mephistopheles, this paper aims to present aspects of what one could call Goethe’s vision of a modern devil. Taking departure from etymological considerations on the root of “diabolus”, i.e. diabállein, meaning to cast apart, to scatter, but also to accuse, as well as from different beliefs of German “Aberglaube” (superstition), it will become clear that one if not the major feature of Goethe’s Mephistopheles-figure is movement, not just …

Interlingual Translation Of A Spanish Children's Book, Addison Haddock 2022 Lindenwood University

Interlingual Translation Of A Spanish Children's Book, Addison Haddock

2022 Student Academic Showcase

Translation is often invisible to the general population, yet it is a pivotal component of our success as a social species. The vast majority of humans could not name even a fraction of the thousands of languages present, yet many of them pervade our day-to-day lives. Consequently, a translator has the paramount role of taking an author’s original meanings and relaying this information to an audience of another language, another dialect, or another period of time. To experience this for myself, I translated the children’s story La Llorona: The Crying Woman by taking its original Spanish and transferring its meaning …

A Translation Study: Idioms, Metaphors, Humor, And Expressions From Dutch To English, Shelby Kasse 2022 Lindenwood University

A Translation Study: Idioms, Metaphors, Humor, And Expressions From Dutch To English, Shelby Kasse

2022 Student Academic Showcase

In this literary research essay, I have translated a Dutch short story into English. I translated the text in two different ways, a literal/direct translation, and a revised and research-based translation. This text includes Dutch idioms, metaphors, humor, and expressions. The translation of these directly have no significant meaning in English, which is why a translation of these should be done carefully. This research paper examines the best ways and difficulties of translating a source language, its cultural-bound references and values, into a target language.

I Am A Cat, No. Ii, Natsume Sōseki, Kan-Ichi Ando

What would the neighbors say about you if they didn’t know your cat was listening?

What if it was “The Cat With No Name”? The one who claims “I have, as a cat, attained the highest pitch of evolution imaginable. … My tail is filled with all sorts of wisdom and, above all, a secret art handed down in the cat family, which teaches how to make fools of mankind. … I am a cat, it is true, but remember I am one who keeps in the house of a scholar who reads the Moral Discourses of Epictetus and bangs …
