The Suffrage Postcard Project: Feminist Digital Archiving And Transatlantic Suffrage History, Ana Stevenson, Kristin Allukian

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

This article introduces The Suffrage Postcard Project (SPP), a feminist digital humanities project that utilizes digital tools to explore how transatlantic suffrage postcards and feminist digital humanities practices engender new historical narratives of the suffrage movement, especially in the United States and Britain. This article uses our Omeka-based digital archive of suffrage postcards to discuss the history of the postcard, the significance of a postcard archive to digital archival studies, and the significance of the digital postcard archive to digital history.

Our project uses feminist DH methodology in coding, tagging, and data visualization to better understand how gender, and intersecting …

Creating Transformative Learning Opportunities: Expanding Assessment And Centering Student Voices Through Digital Infrastructures, Jennifer Hootman, Trey Conatser

Library Presentations

The shift to remote and hybrid learning due to COVID-19 has underscored the urgency for instructors to explore alternative assessments and center student voices. This session focuses on advancing libraries’ work promoting digital literacies with pedagogical collaboration around project-based assessments. We explore the case study of CreateUK, a web hosting initiative at the University of Kentucky Libraries designed to provide accessible online space for faculty, staff, and students to develop websites and other digital publications. Using this as a blueprint, participants will consider ways of fostering similar initiatives at their institutions that create transformative learning opportunities for students.

Curators And Active Participants: Archives, Exhibits, Engagement, And Outreach Through Teaching, Rebecca Fitzsimmons

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

This presentation focuses on how a set of digital humanities workshops offered to university faculty helped them incorporate new resources and methods into their teaching. The first workshop was an overview of digital tools that focused on getting started without feeling overwhelmed, ways to incorporate art and archival resources into projects, and approaches to facilitating meaningful experiences in the classroom. The second workshop refined this material by focusing on how the same idea and content could be used to create three different digital humanities projects—a collection database and map, an online exhibit, and a digital publication. The exhibitions and digital …

What Are The Predictors Of Cyber Power?, Carter Bowman 2021 James Madison University

What Are The Predictors Of Cyber Power?, Carter Bowman

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

This thesis identifies the predictors needed to anticipate a rise in a state’s national cyber power. Historically, national power measurements provide solid starting points but are not sufficient to rely on when assessing modern cyber power. Because of various factors such as an increase in globalization and reliance upon intelligence, factors that were once of paramount importance are now obsolete, and factors that had not been considered are now extremely important. By identifying the factors that matter most in predicting a rise in cyber power, future researchers have the tools to create a sophisticated metric by which to rank anticipated …

Immigration After The Great Famine: A Case Study Of The Passengers Of The S.S. Canadian, Erin Kelly 2021 James Madison University

Immigration After The Great Famine: A Case Study Of The Passengers Of The S.S. Canadian, Erin Kelly

Masters Theses, 2020-current

From 1879 to 1881 Western Ireland suffered a famine that left one million people in a state of destitution. To assist the starving, impoverished farming communities that were scattered across the region English Quaker and philanthropist James Hack Tuke successfully pitched the Tuke Emigration Scheme to the UK government in 1882, lasting through 1884. While historians of Irish immigration have recently begun to research famines other than the Great Famine, very few have delved more deeply into this particular scheme. Of those who have, including Christine Kinnealy and Gerard Moran, analysis has been limited to the perspective of Ireland and …

Kinstitution: A Topia Between Archive And Proposal, Christopher Lineberry

Theses and Dissertations

Situating Topher Lineberry's work, this paper offers a primer on institutional critique, preliminary developments of "kinstitutional critique," and the cultivation of family-derived art history through the work of the artist's grandmother, Helen Lineberry. Feeding into a working understanding of family-and-kin-as-institution, the paper ultimately locates Topher Lineberry's work between relations to place, historical archives, and speculative proposals.

Video For All: An Argument Towards Standardization Of Video Production Practices And Research, Kelley Bostian

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

Instructional videos, a subset of video pedagogy, are becoming valuable pedagogical tools for instructors within both higher education and professional writing environments. By researching contemporary academic literature and creating video artifacts that put theory into practice, this capstone project answers three important questions: 1) How could video pedagogy shift student attitudes or engagement with course content in digital learning environments? 2) What benefits and limitations of standardizing and researching video pedagogy are valuable for educators interested in creating video to understand, including educators with limited or no video production experience? 3) In what ways could certain production techniques in video …

An Anthology On Human Suffering In America: Notes On Black Lives Matter, Katelyn Dubois 2021 University of Rhode Island

An Anthology On Human Suffering In America: Notes On Black Lives Matter, Katelyn Dubois

Senior Honors Projects

For far too long systemic racism has protected inequality and suffering in the United States, preaching that one’s worth and opportunities are determined by the color of their skin. Despite the foundational values of freedom and equality in the United States, the Black community continues to be killed and discriminated against in disturbingly disproportionate amounts to their peers, and is precisely 3.23 times more likely than Caucasians to be killed by police. “An Anthology on Human Suffering in America: Notes on Black Lives Matter'' was created with the intent to bring greater awareness to the racism and social injustices experienced …

The Impact Of Booktube On Book Publishing: A Study Of John Green's Looking For Alaska, Amanda Mitchell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Around 2010, a group of online content creators, commonly referred to as "Youtubers" or "BookTubers," began to emerge on YouTube.com. This community's content revolves around many topics under the realm of literature including book discussions, reviews, genre discussions, and many more. While the group started off small, it has grown significantly over the past decade; some of the most prominent creators have several hundred thousand subscribers. In the ten years since its emergence, the creators and content have transformed, where many in the beginning made video discussions just for fun, and now many of them have grown their channel into …

Land Lines: Modes Of Communication In Kentucky's Queer Past And Present., Emma R. Johansen 2021 University of Louisville

Land Lines: Modes Of Communication In Kentucky's Queer Past And Present., Emma R. Johansen

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

As the queer historical discipline grows in reach, prominence, and scholarship, southern queer histories are on the tail end of this growing academic attention. Academic historians, digital humanists, and public historians alike have neglected Kentucky’s rich queer history in academic circles. This thesis aims to mend this gap in historic interpretation through research in Kentucky gay press, television, radio, and their effect on Kentucky’s queer organizing. Through extensive primary research in the Williams-Nichols archive, and secondary sources on the women in print movement, queer rurality, and gay media studies, this thesis measures the ways Kentucky queer communities have correlated with …

But Also Full Of Seeds For A Future That Could Have Turned Out Differently., Megan Marie Bickel 2021 University of Louisville

But Also Full Of Seeds For A Future That Could Have Turned Out Differently., Megan Marie Bickel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the relationship between "illusion," "allusion," and their relationship to contemporary images which announce, shield, or reference information. Beginning by discussing Casualist and Post-Digital Painting discourse, two styles I work within, we see connecting tissue in announcing and shielding of meaning. We look at the meaning of marks, and in the parallel exhibition, marks that utilize camouflage strategies appear as a metaphor for illuding to information which appears as conveying depth when there is none, and using paintings' symbols in objects that are not paintings. The work 'alludes' to what the viewer has seen before and relies on …

Crowdsourcing Metadata: The Revolutionary Cataloging Interface And How It Can Help Your Library Expose And Promote Hidden Collections, Samuel T. Barber

Digital Initiatives Symposium

The crowdsourcing of metadata to expose and promote hidden collections is a significant and growing development in libraries, archives and museums, and offers hitherto unparalleled mass-collaborative potential for digital humanities projects. Originating from the field of citizen science, the online Zooniverse platform has been successfully utilized for this purpose by institutions including the Imperial War Museum, the Folger and the Huntington. This session presents recently published original research1 in order to analyze and explain the automated quality control features of this major metadata crowdsourcing digital platform. The results, it is argued, are truly revolutionary. We conclude with a brief …

Persian Elements In Kashmiri Marsiya (Elegy): A Case Study Of Sang (Stone), Mufazil Ali Malla, Barkat Ali Latoo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Marsiya or elegy poetry is a literary genre that is often sung whenever a dear person has died. Marsiya has a visionary and secularist outlook. The knowledge keeps countries alive, both politically and socially, and economically. In the Shia sect of Islam, the act of writing and proposing elegy on Imam Hussain A.S. Martyrdom finds an important place, although it is not entirely restricted to it. In Northwest India, by the end of the 11th century, Persian-Arabic words were developed and the languages spoken at the time were brought to the Indian language. Kashmir has been said to have had …
