A Divine Comedy of Errors: Political Paintings by Saira Wasim
Paradoxes of Genre: the Epic Miniature
Teeming with figures captured in mid-action, paintings by Saira Wasim present grand narratives. If it weren’t for their petite size and two-dimensionality, they might be mistaken for Greek mythology, Baroque opera, epic film, or other monumental genres. Yet, these small paintings represent a singular creation, one that transcends any individual medium or genre. In Wasim’s hands, the centuries-old format of the miniature painting has been transformed into a stage for human drama, a jam-packed cinematic space that approaches the grandeur of Cecil B. DeMille …

My art is the foundation I use to commune with myself and bridge the gap to the rest of the world. A gap created by everyday being surrounded by information, so much so that it is easy to become numb. I do not want, because of my inability to filter the relentless onslaught of information, to walk through life tuned off. All that undigested knowledge leaves me feeling distant from myself and unable to connect with others. This leaves me with the sensation of not knowing myself.

In my work I examine how and where nature and culture collide, merge, overlap or become one. Ultimately my goal is to draw attention to the ways we perceive and remember nature as well as ho w we experience the natural landscape in opposition to built environments. I am also interested in how our relation to these spaces changes over time and how we might envision these environments in the not-s o-distant future.

The Unfixedness Of It, 2010 University of Massachusetts Amherst
The Unfixedness Of It, Kerry O'Grady
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
My drawings contemplate the unfixed nature of my experience. I draw from a state of uncertainty about the relationship between self and space, between a moment of experience and the one that follows it. My process involves intuitive mark-making in which instances of perception are indeterminate and discontinuous. I draw from the experience of unhinged moments, from silence and stillness, and from the indefinable, inarticulable, interstitial moments of perception between those that can be concretely described.
The immediacy of drawing, the direct engagement with the mark on the surface, is central to my work. Intuitive mark-making is a way of …

Different Ways To Record Light, Ryan P. Feeney
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Different Ways to Record Light is a series of photographs, videos and objects that explore the affect that popular culture has on how I perceive, and make sense of the world around me. By using light as a thematic and metaphoric subject this work opens up a discourse about the role that images and technology play in our perceptual lives. This thesis paper will give a theoretical, contextual and historical framework for the concepts explored in my studio practice.

I am investigating landscape and how it relates to the body, human relationships, memory, and status of being.

Race & Rock & Roll: A Visual Analysis Of Rolling Stone Cover Photography, Erica D. Block
Honors Theses
If African Americans heavily influenced the development of rock & roll as a musical genre, why do we picture rock stars as white men with guitars? In this project I examine, with a particular focus on race, how the the visual culture surrounding rock music evolved to where it is today. To do this, I performed a close visual analysis of Rolling Stone Magazine covers from 1967-1980. In this presentation I illustrate Rolling Stone's trend of featuring 'white negroes' on their covers, which allowed the magazine to use the selling power of a white person's face while retaining the attractiveness, …

The Construction Of Locative Situations: Locative Media And The Situationist International, Recuperation Or Redux?, Conor Mcgarrigle
Articles
A trend exists within locative media art of invoking the practices of the Situationist International (SI) as an art historical and theoretical background to contemporary practices. It is claimed that locative media seeks to re-enchant urban space though the application of locative technologies to develop novel and experimental methods for navigating, exploring and experiencing the city. To this end, SI concepts such as psychogeography and the techniques of detournement and the de ́rive (drift) have exerted considerable influence on locative media practices, but questions arise as to whether this constitutes a valid contemporary appropriation or a recuperative co-option, serving to …
