Leftist Militant Songs And War Of Position In Lebanon (1975-1977), Mohamad J. Hodeib

All Graduate Works by Year: Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This essay looks at the emergence of a generation of leftist militant songwriters against the backdrop of a revolutionary moment that influenced political and cultural landscapes in Beirut during the 1970s. After the Arab military defeat against Israel in 1967, the conjuncture of the Lebanese and Palestinian revolutionary movements in Lebanon fostered a revolutionary moment that manifested itself on different levels, including art and cultural expression. I look at the development of leftist militant songs, a genre, attitude, and approach to song production and performance that came to be at the intersection of radical theatre, poetry, and music. Productions by ...

Walking As Ontological Shifter: Thoughts In The Key Of Life, Bibi (Silvina) Calderaro Sep 2017

Walking As Ontological Shifter: Thoughts In The Key Of Life, Bibi (Silvina) Calderaro

All Graduate Works by Year: Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

With walking as ontological shifter I pursue an alternative to the dominant modernist episteme that offers either/or onto-epistemologies of opposition and their reifying engagements. I propose this type of walking is an intentional turning towards a set of radical positions that, as integrative aesthetic and therapeutic practice, brings multiplicity and synchronicity to experience and being in an expanded sociality. This practice facilitates the conditions of possibility for recurring points of contact between the interiority perceived as ‘body’ and the exteriority perceived as ‘world.’ While making evident the self’s at once incoherence with it-self, it opens to a space ...

Art Practices MFA Theses

In this thesis, I address the questions and issues that are central to my work as an artist. I discuss my primary motivations in the creation of this project, along with an explanation of the process that led to its completion. I provide historical context for work, including specific references to artists, movements, and writers that have been influential. In addition, I consider the current cultural climate and social backdrop in which this work exists. The themes and subjects that are addressed will continue to inform my practice in the years to come.

This thesis is in support of the exhibition entitled ES-SEN-TIAL on display in Tipton Gallery located in Downtown Johnson City from February 27, 2017 to March 10, 2017.

Water Being Water, Ronald R. Geibert Jul 2017

Water Being Water, Ronald R. Geibert

Ronald Geibert

IQ. DNA. MRI. FYI. In an ever-changing world, we find ourselves conversing with abbreviated acronyms and phrases. They drive today's economy, political agenda, and water cooler chitchat. They define our use of resources and the attention given to matters. Who we are, or think we are, are wrapped around their brevity. In our hurried attempt to sort through the complexities of life we use them to only answer the obvious-How? Unfortunately, an equally important question, Why? is often ignored. The solving of the how of things has generally been left to the scientists and the reasons as to the ...

Collaborative Librarianship

The University of Houston Libraries sponsored an interdisciplinary event for students, faculty, and the public, titled the Artists’ Health and Wellness Colloquium and Resource Fair. Aspiring and working artists were instructed in how to maintain good health and to avoid overstressing their bodies as they practice their art. Scholars presented both historical and trending perspectives on the intersection of art and health science. The event was held in order to facilitate learning in two key research areas and to demonstrate the library's ability to bridge disparate disciplines and forge new partnerships with multiple academic units simultaneously. This article presents ...
