Make It, Take It, Anne M. Giangiulio 2011 University of Texas at El Paso

Make It, Take It, Anne M. Giangiulio

Anne M. Giangiulio

Book cover I designed for 'Make It, Take It' by Rus Bradburd, published by Cinco Puntos Press. Steve Pytel is an assistant coach and top recruiter for a university basketball program. His goals are simple. He wants to keep his job and be a head coach someday. Keeping his wife barely makes the list. The team staggers; everyone’s days are numbered. Pytel was responsible for landing prized recruits Leonard Redmond and Jamal Davis. Pytel’s duties now? Keep Leonard out of jail. Make sure Jamal ignores the advice of his preacher, sidesteps his girlfriend’s pregnancy, and puts the ball in the …

Chalk The Block 2012 Poster, Anne M. Giangiulio 2011 University of Texas at El Paso

Chalk The Block 2012 Poster, Anne M. Giangiulio

Anne M. Giangiulio

I designed this poster for the annual Chalk the Block event which took place October 12–October 14, 2012 in downtown El Paso. For the pop-up gallery component of the event, I organized a group of 15 students from my 'Graphic Design 4: Typography' class at The University of Texas at El Paso. Their posters were judged and selected to be on sale in a downtown space, previously a vacant store front, which had been converted into a gallery for the three-day weekend event. All proceeds from the sale of the posters went directly to the students.

The Participating Witness: A Conversation With Jaret Belliveau, Matthew Ryan Smith 2011 The University of Western Ontario

The Participating Witness: A Conversation With Jaret Belliveau, Matthew Ryan Smith

Matthew Ryan Smith, Ph.D.

Jaret Belliveau is a Moncton-based photographer and filmmaker whose photographic work addresses illness and loss. Arguably, Belliveau is best known for his series Dominion Street (2003-2008), which began as a visual investigation into family dynamics and the hegemonic balances of power that maintain it. However, ten months into the project, Belliveau’s mother was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Soon after, the disease spread throughout the rest of her body and in time it took her life. Upon the recent staging of Dominion Street at Fredericton’s Beaverbrook Gallery (April 26, 2012 - June 10, 2012), I conducted an e-mail exchange with Belliveau …

Karin Doleske: The Drama Of Abstraction, Matthew Ryan Smith 2011 The University of Western Ontario

Karin Doleske: The Drama Of Abstraction, Matthew Ryan Smith

Matthew Ryan Smith, Ph.D.

Karin Doleske’s most recent series Embedded Paintings from 2012 maintains a heightened interest in placing the viewer as an arbiter of knowledge. With these works, Doleske has manipulated poetic narrative for the visual sphere so that viewers may experience her paintings as they would written texts. However, in a twist of semiotic mischief, each painting formally characterizes an empty page to be filled by the viewer’s thoughts and imagination. For example, the horizontality of "Ten" subtly points to the lines of a written novel yet alphabetical letters are clearly absent. By doing so, it is as if Doleske has created …

Repensar A Teoria Do Estado Entre Pluralismo Ético E Globalização, Paulo Ferreira da Cunha 2011 Universidade do Porto

Repensar A Teoria Do Estado Entre Pluralismo Ético E Globalização, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Quem Defende A Constituição?, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

A Constituição Laboral Em Alto Risco, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Perry B Marks • Artist Statement, Perry B. Marks 2011 Claremont Graduate University

Perry B Marks • Artist Statement, Perry B. Marks

CGU MFA Theses

My work cuts through the distractions and travesties of modern American life, revealing the nonsense that multinational corporations spew. Consumption as a way of life is now a familiar part of the global culture. Political and corporate icons have made their way into individual identity by means of branding, product placement and crossover promotion. They are ubiquitous, embedded in myriad experiences to attract, entertain and satisfy artificially stimulated appetites. Similar to placating drugs, they function like the bread and circuses of the Roman Empire.

My process breaks down elements and symbols from the past and present, remixing old and new …

Female Spectators In The July Monarchy And Henry Scheffer's Entrée De Jeanne D’Arc À Orléans, Kalisha Roberts 2011 Brigham Young University - Provo

Female Spectators In The July Monarchy And Henry Scheffer's Entrée De Jeanne D’Arc À Orléans, Kalisha Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I consider Henry Scheffer's Entrée de Jeanne d’Arc à Orléans, le 8 mai 1429 (1843) in relation to female audiences of the July Monarchy. As a part of the larger Galerie des Batailles in the Musée Historique instituted in 1837 by Louis-Philippe, Entrée de Jeanne d'Arc has been addressed relative to the political objectives of the monarchy. Limited scholarship surrounding the Galerie des Batailles has focused on its evolution from royal apartments in the château de Versailles to public museum. However, the broadening of audiences during the July Monarchy and potential points of engagement between viewer and …

Inconstitucionalidade Da Abolição De Feriados, Paulo Ferreira da Cunha 2011 Universidade do Porto

Inconstitucionalidade Da Abolição De Feriados, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

The Tornado Tree: Drawing On Stories And Storybooks, Toni A. Wood 2011 Brigham Young University - Provo

The Tornado Tree: Drawing On Stories And Storybooks, Toni A. Wood

Theses and Dissertations

Storytelling has been used by many cultures to record events, research genealogy, and to teach moral lessons. Some cultures passed on their histories and important events through oral narration, papyrus, or cathedral stained glass windows. More modern cultures write personal histories, and use modern technology to communicate with each other. This study is an arts based project based on writing a storybook. It is an exploration of why storytelling is important from a cultural point of view using my experiences to write a storybook based on a true event from my family history.

A Comparative Case Study: Investigation Of A Certified Elementary Art Specialist Teaching Elementary Art Vs. A Non-Art Certified Teacher Teaching Elementary Art, Jordan Jensen 2011 Brigham Young University - Provo

A Comparative Case Study: Investigation Of A Certified Elementary Art Specialist Teaching Elementary Art Vs. A Non-Art Certified Teacher Teaching Elementary Art, Jordan Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Most colleges and universities offer a general course in elementary art education to provide instruction to the elementary generalist to enable that student to later provide art instruction to students at the elementary level. This course is commonly referred to as the two-credit course in elementary art education throughout this thesis. This thesis is a case study investigation of a certified elementary art specialist and a non-art certified teacher teaching elementary art in the Subject School District in Utah. It asks and gathers data on three main questions. How is art education valuable for elementary students? What is a quality …

Traces Of Existence, Jayna Brown Quinn 2011 Brigham Young University - Provo

Traces Of Existence, Jayna Brown Quinn

Theses and Dissertations

This project report accounts for my final MFA project, Traces of Existence. This body of work began as an exploration, partially borne of the love of genealogical research translated into visual art by exploring the things my ancestors touched, be it ephemera, the soil they lived on, or artifacts they left behind, and partly as a pathway through which I could learn to understand more about my own identity, all the while finding beauty in the mundane. Although the works are personal, it is my hope that the viewer will respond to them in his/her own way, and that …

Referendar Estados De Excepção, Paulo Ferreira da Cunha 2011 Universidade do Porto

Referendar Estados De Excepção, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

The Portable Art Gallery: Facilitating Student Autonomy And Ownership Through Exhibiting Artwork, Jethro D. Gillespie 2011 Brigham Young University - Provo

The Portable Art Gallery: Facilitating Student Autonomy And Ownership Through Exhibiting Artwork, Jethro D. Gillespie

Theses and Dissertations

In an attempt to help a class of high school AP Studio Art students find a more authentic sense of autonomy and ownership with their own art projects, the author has constructed a portable art gallery space designated for the exhibition of student artwork. Through a theoretical framework of post-structuralism, as well as a hybrid methodological approach, including tenets of both action research and grounded theory, he was able to explore how de-centralizing traditional, pedagogical notions of power in the classroom and utilizing contemporary art education practices affected AP Studio Art students' experience in the art classroom. By placing an …
