Mark Twain And Critical Thinking In The Secondary Classroom, Daniel Zehr 2013 Illinois State University

Mark Twain And Critical Thinking In The Secondary Classroom, Daniel Zehr

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study will explore and evaluate the school literacy practices of high school-aged participants at the freshmen level (grade 9). It will interpret their analysis, comprehension, and critical thinking skills through an examination of confidence, abilities, and fluency through discussion and student-led dialogue. Building on previous research regarding critical thinking skills, the researcher hopes to articulate the ways in which students with varied levels of ability (grades 9-12) may be able to use their literacy learning to demonstrate critical thinking skills that will enhance their reading fluency, comprehension, and analytical skills and to foster an appreciation of literature and …

Educational Change Processes In A School In Zimbabwe, Africa, Thira Schmidl, Dr. Russell T. Osguthorpe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future recommended “that schools be restructured to become genuine learning organizations for both students and teachers -organizations that respect learning, honor teaching, and teach for understanding”.1 A lot of change is necessary to accomplish this restructuring asked for by this commission.

Dance-Focused Cultural Information Database, Bryce R. Shelley, Susanne Davis 2013 Brigham Young University

Dance-Focused Cultural Information Database, Bryce R. Shelley, Susanne Davis

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Dance is often overlooked in the United States as a valid medium through which other cultures can be identified, classified, and understood. As dance is not an integral part of life in the United States, many people forget (or never knew) that dance is a cultural element sometimes as integrated into daily life as eating, sleeping, or working. Because of its unique blend of various arts it can be utilized as a potent tool for understanding cultures from different times and places. Cultural dances can help us see a different view of the world through costuming, choice of dance music, …

Cromwell’S Jews: The Return From The British Exile, Courtney Jensen Peacock, Dr. Martha Moffit Peacock 2013 Brigham Young University

Cromwell’S Jews: The Return From The British Exile, Courtney Jensen Peacock, Dr. Martha Moffit Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When I originally applied for an ORCA grant, I submitted a proposal to do research on the readmission of the Jews into England in 1655. After receiving the grant, I traveled to London where I was able to examine contemporary sources, including prints, newspapers, and books. After obtaining permission to use the facilities at the Warburg Institute and the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, I spent five weeks immersed in primary and secondary sources.

Multicultural Integration Of Art, Literacy And Aesthetics, Karie Lasson, Donna Kay Beattie 2013 Brigham Young University

Multicultural Integration Of Art, Literacy And Aesthetics, Karie Lasson, Donna Kay Beattie

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Art is secondary in many elementary schools. However, when integrated into the core curriculum, art has power to enhance children’s critical thinking and expressing skills. As stated at the Ann Arbor Street Fair, “Children who have no aesthetic education may not be able to write, not because they can’t spell, but because they have nothing to say.” This project explored a sound way for elementary generalists to integrate art into the curriculum to help children have meaningful aesthetic experiences with multicultural art and express those experiences through writing and art production.

Bridging The Gap, Andy von Harten, Val Brinkerhoff 2013 Brigham Young University

Bridging The Gap, Andy Von Harten, Val Brinkerhoff

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My family began as one little unit, but had become little dots on a map as each person created his or her own little family. This de-centralization has weakened the once close-knit society that existed in former years. With this constant change, how can one person create a link from an older generation to the younger one? My project attempted to prime the generational pump and unite families, beginning with mine. The project included visiting little known members of my family over Christmas break 2004, interviewing them, and then creating descriptive photographs that revealed more about each person. The resulting …

Photographic Preservation Of Pioneer Settlements In The Inter-Mountain West, Becky Lynn Grover, John Telford 2013 Brigham Young University

Photographic Preservation Of Pioneer Settlements In The Inter-Mountain West, Becky Lynn Grover, John Telford

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As the pioneer settlers came to the west, they spread out into all of the mountain valleys. They came with a faith in God burning bright in their souls. This faith would be tested as they braved the harsh winters and short growing seasons. They built many structures that bear the mark of their craftsmanship. These buildings have been an inspiration and in a way they are a memorial to them. I hope that others will be reminded of the great deeds of our forefathers.

Seeds Of The Family, Chelsy Smith Walker, Bryon Draper 2013 Brigham Young University

Seeds Of The Family, Chelsy Smith Walker, Bryon Draper

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Seeds of the Family was an instillation displayed at the BF Larsen Gallery in the Harris Fine Arts Center at Brigham Young University from June 2 to June 15, 2004. The instillation consisted of 32 dandelion-type seeds suspended intermittently from 9 steel cables that I stretched over the top of the gallery space. The seeds were hung to create the effect of wind swirling through a burst of seeds from a giant white puff-ball, and filled all of the space under the hanging light grids.

Color Harmony And Light Frequency Ratios: A Collection Of Video Pieces Using An Experimental Color Theory, Collin L. Bradford, Peter Everett 2013 Brigham Young University

Color Harmony And Light Frequency Ratios: A Collection Of Video Pieces Using An Experimental Color Theory, Collin L. Bradford, Peter Everett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My original proposal focused on the development and use of a system of colors that related to each other in mathematically harmonious ways. Light, like sound, has specific frequencies. A sound’s frequency determines its pitch and the ratios between the frequencies of two or more sounds determine the harmony or dissonance between them. Simpler ratios create more harmonious relationships; more complex ratios create dissonant relationships. For example, two sounds whose frequencies relate to each other in a 2 to 1 ratio (perhaps one is 440 Hz and the other is 880 Hz) form an octave. A slightly more complex ratio, …

Rafael Israelyan And The Victory Monument: Negotiating Christian-Armenian Iconography In Stalinist Architecture, Ryan Browning, Dr. Cynthia Finlayson 2013 Brigham Young University

Rafael Israelyan And The Victory Monument: Negotiating Christian-Armenian Iconography In Stalinist Architecture, Ryan Browning, Dr. Cynthia Finlayson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Stalin’s terror regime over the Soviet Union created a tense environment for artists and architects. He oversaw the birth of a new artistic movement called Socialist Realism, which sought to portray the progress and beauty of socialist life. In most corners of the Soviet Union, the Socialist Realism style and ethic was enforced with a heavy hand by government watchdogs. Artists who attempted individualism in their work or who refused to follow the iconological status quo of the new movement came under the condemnation of the state, and were often removed from society in the times of the great purge. …

Art And Music: Historical Overview And Analytical Subtext Or Capstone Project Shaping Musical Phrases, Elizabeth Hiatt, Dr. Jon Green, Peter Everett 2013 Brigham Young University

Art And Music: Historical Overview And Analytical Subtext Or Capstone Project Shaping Musical Phrases, Elizabeth Hiatt, Dr. Jon Green, Peter Everett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Historically, there is a significant correlation between art and music. A study of music from the medieval square neumes of Gregorian Chant to the abstract designs of contemporary Minimalism reveals a significant correlation to the visual arts. Likewise, paintings such as Piet Modrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie and Whistler’s portrait Symphony in Gray and Pink acting not merely as an image, but as a representation of music, actual or imagined.

Auguste Rodin’S Burghers Of Calais, Emily Miller, Dr. Heather Jensen 2013 Brigham Young University

Auguste Rodin’S Burghers Of Calais, Emily Miller, Dr. Heather Jensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1889, a French 19th century sculptor, Auguste Rodin, created a monument that marked the historical heroism of six men who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of their town in Calais, France in 1347. The Burghers of Calais (see fig. 1), cast in bronze, has twelve copies in existence today, but was originally intended to be placed in Calais and now rests in front of the town hall. In the piece, each of these men, dressed in sackcloth, used their lives as payment for the town that was captured by King Edward the III of England. What is remarkable …

Experiments In Real-Time Video Processing And Sonification Using Cellular Automata, Morgan Quigley, Dr. Steven Ricks 2013 Brigham Young University

Experiments In Real-Time Video Processing And Sonification Using Cellular Automata, Morgan Quigley, Dr. Steven Ricks

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this project, we sought to create a software system that uses the chaotic output of large cellular automata to create visualizations and sonifications that are aesthetically interesting. Conceptually, a cellular automaton is a group of deterministic cells that are interconnected to form a regular grid. The cells “evolve” in discrete time steps, which occur as the future value of each cell is calculated and then used to replace the current value of each cell. Each automaton and its associated governing functions behave differently: some have a stable state, others have stable oscillations, and others experience chaotic motion at the …

Getting To The Heart Of Matters: Applying Appropriate Performance Practices To Period Music, Bryson Mortensen, Dr. Ronald Staheli 2013 Brigham Young University

Getting To The Heart Of Matters: Applying Appropriate Performance Practices To Period Music, Bryson Mortensen, Dr. Ronald Staheli

Journal of Undergraduate Research

There is nothing worse than singing a boring piece. Often, when conductors decide to perform works from periods such as the Renaissance, Baroque, or even Classical periods, they find that it is difficult to make the piece exciting. The choir is quickly frustrated because of the difficulty of a virtuosic Baroque passage or a particularly enigmatic polyphonic Renaissance piece. When the piece is finally coaxed into a performance, the audience quickly loses interest because the choir is so focused on the notes instead of the meaning of the words. As a result of challenging experiences like these, many conductors give …

Sheet Music Buying Trends Of Classically Trained Musicians, Stephen Fairbanks, Dr. Andrew Dabcynski 2013 Brigham Young University

Sheet Music Buying Trends Of Classically Trained Musicians, Stephen Fairbanks, Dr. Andrew Dabcynski

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Classically trained musicians have yet to discover how computing advances can transform the sheet music industry. Through the internet, it is possible to transmit information instantly and inexpensively. By utilizing this, musicians could access the vast stores of music literature for a fraction of the cost. This study has (1) evaluated music publishing software, (2) assessed the buying trends of musicians, and (3) submitted a proposal to the Marriott School’s Business Plan Competition.

Brigham Young University Compliance With The Jeanne Clery Act, Marissa A. Widdison, Joel Campbell 2013 Brigham Young University

Brigham Young University Compliance With The Jeanne Clery Act, Marissa A. Widdison, Joel Campbell

Journal of Undergraduate Research

On April 5, 1986, 19-year-old Jeanne Clery was raped and murdered in her residence hall room at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. The crime was opportunistic and random; Clery’s bedroom was unlocked and the perpetrator was another student whom she didn’t know. After her murder, Jeanne’s parents discovered that students and parents hadn’t been told about nearly 40 violent crimes that happened at Lehigh in the three years before the murder. Disturbed by the ignorance that contributed to their daughter’s death, the Clery’s — along with other campus crime victims — persuaded Congress to create the “Crime Awareness and Campus Security …

Preserving Artistic Tradition, Trilea Minson, Richard Hull 2013 Brigham Young University

Preserving Artistic Tradition, Trilea Minson, Richard Hull

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Several great painters in art history used a certain kind of technique on their paintings. They used thin glazes rather then opaque layers of oil paint. Layers upon layers of translucent glazes created a luminous quality in their painting that added a richness and depth still admired and appreciated today. Unfortunately, this process is also very time consuming, and as such has been abandoned by many artists and art instructors. By learning this traditional process, I felt that I could not only increase my abilities as a painter and enhance my portfolio work, but also preserve the magnificent tradition and …
