Identifying And Integrating Communication Theories In The Social Sciences: The Pursuit Of A Universal Communication Model, Christopher C. Pope, Dr. Ed Adams 2013 Brigham Young University

Identifying And Integrating Communication Theories In The Social Sciences: The Pursuit Of A Universal Communication Model, Christopher C. Pope, Dr. Ed Adams

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The complexity of communication as a concept is staggering. Few words in our modern vocabulary are used in as many contexts and with as many meanings as communication. We have anchored many of our modern hopes to the promise of better communication, such as hopes for peace, enlightenment, and productivity. It makes sense then that communication has been studied extensively this past century, sometimes in studies invoking the word; oftentimes not. In any case, the voluminous research on communication and closely related subjects presents current scholars with the monumental task of ordering, valuing, and clarifying what we already know about …

Harp Competitions In The Paris Conservatory, Shelley Lynn Jones, David A. Day 2013 Brigham Young University

Harp Competitions In The Paris Conservatory, Shelley Lynn Jones, David A. Day

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris has been a center for the world’s best musicians and composers since it was established centuries ago. It is the school’s tradition to hold a competition for each instrument every year. Every year a piece is chosen for the competition and students of that instrument compete. Many of the pieces selected in the past for the harp are now widely played and are part of the harp’s standard repertoire. Gabriel Faure’s Impromptu or Felix Godefroid’s La danse des sylphes are both constantly being played and recycled for other competitions. …

Beginning Programming Concepts For Web Designers, Bryant Cutler, Ray Elder

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Graphic design is a rapidly changing profession. While good design is still based on good typesetting and compositional skills, the advent of the personal computer has had a huge impact on the way that designers work. In no medium is this more apparent than in web design, the design of electronic documents for display on the Internet or on corporate intranets. Unlike any other design medium, web design is sharply bounded by technical details; good web designs are aesthetically pleasing, functional, standards-based, and require as little transmission bandwidth as possible.

The Marvelous American Reality: Making A Case For Carpentier’S Magical Realism In Latin American Music, Erika Edwards, Dr. Arden Hopkin, George Handley 2013 Brigham Young University

The Marvelous American Reality: Making A Case For Carpentier’S Magical Realism In Latin American Music, Erika Edwards, Dr. Arden Hopkin, George Handley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1949 the Nobel Prize-winning Cuban novelist and musicologist, Alejo Carpentier, published his essay on lo real maravilloso Americano, an aggressively American discussion of the theory now known as magical realism. Carpentier refers to the German art critic Franz Roh (who initially coined the term in reference to post-expressionist painting in 1925), but diverges and defends magical realism as a uniquely Latin American phenomenon. While the world has latched onto Magical Realism as a critical literary theory, it is undeniably the Latin American authors and artists who have embraced, embodied and defined the practice of it. Carpentier asserts that the …

Algorithmic Composition Using A Computational Model Of Music, Morgan Quigley, Dr. Steve Ricks 2013 Brigham Young University

Algorithmic Composition Using A Computational Model Of Music, Morgan Quigley, Dr. Steve Ricks

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Algorithmic composition involves the application of systematic mathematical methods to the compositional process. Sequences of pitches, rhythms, or other musical elements are manipulated as if they were abstract mathematical symbols, and the resultant music contains patterns that can either be simple enough to recognize audibly or so complex that they are revealed only through detailed score analysis.

Finding Aid For The Henriette Renié (1875-1956) And Françoise Des Varennes (1919-) Papers, Steven S. Nordstrom, David A. Day 2013 Brigham Young University

Finding Aid For The Henriette Renié (1875-1956) And Françoise Des Varennes (1919-) Papers, Steven S. Nordstrom, David A. Day

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Henriette Renié was a world-famous harpist from France who worked to expand the virtuoso repertoire for harp and helped establish the status of the harp as a solo concert instrument. The Henriette Renié and Françoise des Varennes Papers contain personal items originally belonging to Renié, and arranged and used by her goddaughter, des Varennes, for her biography, as well as handwritten and typed documents created by des Varennes in preparing the biography. The items found within the archive range mostly from Renié’s lifetime (1875-1956), although there are many materials collected by des Varennes about Renié that pertaining to her biography …

Improvisation: A Comparison Between Aural And Theoretical Learning, Tyler Jensen, Ray Smith 2013 Brigham Young University

Improvisation: A Comparison Between Aural And Theoretical Learning, Tyler Jensen, Ray Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The study of jazz is a relatively new pedagogy in our educational system. Much of what has been established has been the result of applying classical and existing pedagogical practices to the subject of jazz. The majority of this teaching approach is theoretical in nature, using knowledge of chords, structures and designed systems to analyze and perform music. All too often the aural methods of learning and teaching are neglected. This is also evident in other studies of music were the learning of improvisation is often considered mythical.

The Standing Madonna And St. Catherine From The Kunsthistorisches: A Wedding Gift Symbolic Of The Ideal Bride, Jennifer Champoux, Dr. Martha Peacock 2013 Brigham Young University

The Standing Madonna And St. Catherine From The Kunsthistorisches: A Wedding Gift Symbolic Of The Ideal Bride, Jennifer Champoux, Dr. Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Two small panels by Rogier van der Weyden, The Virgin and Child Standing in a Niche and St. Catherine in a Landscape, both from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, create an interesting puzzle in terms of authorship, iconography, and purpose. Although largely considered to be matching panels of a diptych by Van der Weyden, the works are not conclusively his and, indeed, they exhibit aspects characteristic of his teachers and contemporaries. Moreover, the two panels are no longer attached to each other (if they ever were) which further complicates the issues of authorship and purpose. St. Catherine typically shows up …

Public Justification Of Moral Choices: Using Bok’S Test Of Publicity To Evaluate Moral Reasoning In Public Relations, Thomas H. Grover, Dr. Brad L. Rawlins 2013 Brigham Young University

Public Justification Of Moral Choices: Using Bok’S Test Of Publicity To Evaluate Moral Reasoning In Public Relations, Thomas H. Grover, Dr. Brad L. Rawlins

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Public relations practitioners are sometimes confronted with conflicts between competing values or interests. Resolving such conflicts oftentimes requires public justification of the decision. Undergraduate Thomas Grover, working with professors Brad Rawlins and Kevin Stoker in a mentored research experience as part of an Office of Researh and Creative Activities (ORCA) grant, presented the results of research conducted to determine how pr practitioners make such ethical decisions at The 6th Annual International, Interdisciplinary Public Relations Research Conference in Miami, Florida, in March 2003. The following proceeding outlining the results of the research was written in a press release format for pr …

Bodies In Motion (Photography), Ty Lamont Mecham, Val Brinkerhoff, Caroline Prohosky

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Photography is prominent form of communication in our society, and I envisioned a body of work that would glorify beauty and form in an aesthetically pleasing way. Two of the best resources for these requirements are the landscape and dancers, both of which I absolutely love and am constantly inspired by. Due to the landscapes I chose to photograph as the dancers’ environment, the work needed to be done in color photography. I also wanted the images to feel alive, so each dancing shape had to be in motion, ranging from large obvious motion to small subtle motion.

Adaptation And Photo Illustrations Of Hans Christian Anderson’S Children’S Story: “The Bog Kings Daughter”, Merete Maja Coleman, John Telford, Paul Adams 2013 Brigham Young University

Adaptation And Photo Illustrations Of Hans Christian Anderson’S Children’S Story: “The Bog Kings Daughter”, Merete Maja Coleman, John Telford, Paul Adams

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Hans Christian Anderson is one of the most beloved children’s writers of all times. His stories have symbolic and often religious meaning, unfortunately because of the length and language of them many go unnoticed by children and adults. Photography is a powerful media of communication. Very rarely is it used to illustrate children’s stories. For this project I wanted to rewrite one of Hans Christian Anderson’s stories and illustrate it with photographs. I chose the story, “The Bog King’s Daughter”. “The Bog King’s Daughter is about a daughter’s love for her dying father, how her love for him leads her …

Children’S Book Illustration, Carie Jackson, Richard Hull 2013 Brigham Young University

Children’S Book Illustration, Carie Jackson, Richard Hull

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Children’s book illustration continues to be a field that is closely connected to education. How many of us can remember the first books we picked up as we began learning to read in grade school? “See Pug Run” still comes to mind when I remember my first grade readers, and I would pick out my favorite books at the school library by the familiar illustrations on their covers. Finishing a full set of illustrations for an educational children’s book has given me new insights on the purpose and process of children’s book illustration.

The Sounds Of Syria: Musical Instruments From The Azem Palace, Eric Kyle Lewis, Dr. Cynthia Finlayson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the days of the Ottoman Empire, the Azem Palace was the home of the local governor of Damascus. After World War I and Syrian independence, this residence was converted into Syria’s Museum of Popular Arts and Tradition. Now it contains clothing, furniture, and even musical instruments from Syria.1 However, funding deficits have prevented the staff at the Azem Palace to adequately document, display, and preserve museum items. Thus, Cynthia Finlayson of Brigham Young University’s Art History Department has begun a long-term project to improve the quality of the museum.

Exploring The Image Of Drapery In Works Of Art, Beau Brady, Gary Barton 2013 Brigham Young University

Exploring The Image Of Drapery In Works Of Art, Beau Brady, Gary Barton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Dating from classical sculpture to the late nineteenth century, the image of drapery was an essential expressive tool for the artist. Artists recognized the immense expressive visual power of draped cloth. At times, the artist would fill up two thirds of the canvas with various drapes arranged specifically to create the desired expression. The twentieth century brought a new art and a disassociation with the traditional style, including the uses of drapery. Draped cloth, amidst its great significance on all art forms for hundreds of years, all but disappeared in high art during the twentieth century.

Building A Working Model 1st Century Hydraulis, David M. Macdonald, Dr. Harrison Powley 2013 Brigham Young University

Building A Working Model 1st Century Hydraulis, David M. Macdonald, Dr. Harrison Powley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The ancient hydraulis is the earliest precursor to the modern pipe organ and the first keyboard instrument. The word hydraulis comes from the Greek words for water (hydro) and pipe or chamber (aulos). The hydraulis was invented in the 3rd century B.C. by Ctesibius, an engineer from Alexandria, Egypt. A hydraulis creates pressurized air using the weight of water. The pressurized air is delivered by a key mechanism to pipes which create an audible sound.

Sounds Of A People: An Ethnomusicological Study In Rio De Janeiro, Scott Harwood Homer, Dr. Ron Brough 2013 Brigham Young University

Sounds Of A People: An Ethnomusicological Study In Rio De Janeiro, Scott Harwood Homer, Dr. Ron Brough

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The music of Brazil has a rich heritage and great diversity. Its rhythms, developed by street musicians, are sophisticated and challenging. The people I met know well the songs they hear live and on the radio, and the musicians respond to this by constantly performing creative arrangements of what is formally called “Brazilian Popular Music” (MPB in Portuguese). The result is a culture in which music is a pleasurable part of daily life for most everyone.

Painting Taiwan's Modern Identity, Shelley D. Hawks 2013 Middlesex Community College - Bedford

Painting Taiwan's Modern Identity, Shelley D. Hawks

2013 New England Association for Asian Studies Conference

Taiwan’s painters were dynamic contributors to a revolution in color that dramatically reshaped East Asian art. During the early twentieth century, new techniques of on-site sketching and the introduction of oil paint shook the foundations of Chinese and Japanese ink painting as it had been practiced for centuries. The Japanese colonization of Taiwan, a period when educators such as Ishikawa systematically introduced European painting methods, produced a cohort of painters in Taiwan professionally trained and committed to watercolor and oil painting. Building on international art trends like Impressionism and Fauvism, these painters developed a sense of color distinctly their own. …
