Summary Of Activities, Melinda Richards
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As a music/Honors Russian major, I had hoped to write an honors thesis that would combine both of these interests. I also wanted to spend some time living and studying in Russia to augment the year and a half that I spent in the Ukraine on a mission. I was able to line up living arrangements in St. Petersburg and also to arrange for some studies and private organ lessons at the St. Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. In September 1995, I left to spend a year in Russia. An additional goal was to do research for my thesis. I selected the …

Architectural Expressions Of Faith, Sarah Osmond, Peggy Honey, Mark Hamilton
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The temple is a widely recognized symbol of the LDS faith; however, more accessible to members and non-members around the world, in humble or elaborate form, is the basis of our weekly worship, the chapel. This research, completed as my senior project in Interior Design, analyzes the architectural and interior design of our chapels in three-parts.

Truth In Traditions: An Ethnographic Study Of The Participation Of Bolivians In The Annual Urkupiña Celebration, Angela Rosales Challis, Catherine Black
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Urkupiña is one the most important religious festivities in Quillacollo, Cochabamba, Bolivia. It is a colorful festival with folkloric dancing, a large religious mass, processions, typical food, and the sale of miniature handicrafts. People of all ages participate in this celebration. The festivity consists of different activities during four full days, folkloric dances being fundamental among them. The origin of this festivity comes from a legend. In Quillacollo lived a little shepherd girl that met the Virgin Mary on the hill while taking care of her sheep. The Virgin told the girl that she should bring rocks from the mountain. …

“How can I tell her I am thinking that transformations are not forever?” From the first time I read the final line of Susan Mitchell’s From the Journals of the Frog Prince, I knew I was in trouble. The imagery, the cadences, and the ideas it presented became such a part of me that I knew I had to create a dance based on the poem. Thus began my ORCA experience. The grant I received from the BYU Office of Research and Creative Activities provided the means for me to explore through modern dance ideas significant to the LDS community.

Last Judgment: Understanding The Iconography In Hans Memling’S Painting, Richard V. Thomas
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I started this project with the hopes of uncovering the true reason behind some specific iconography in the Last Judgment Triptych by Hans Memling. Prior to proposing this project, I had done a bit of preliminary research, which did not touch on the interesting iconography used by Memling in this painting. I felt that the icons in question were unique and significant enough that more research was in order to understand why Memling put them in his painting. The icons in question include a specific handclasp used by St. Peter to welcome the souls of the Righteous to heaven, and …

Database Software Development For Ballet, Kristy Parkinson, Jan Dijkwel
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Ballet is a technically demanding performance art. About 500 students take ballet classes each semester at Brigham Young University, and one of the most difficult parts of each ballet class is memorizing all the French terms that each step is known by. In order to facilitate this process, the head of the Ballet Division of the Dance Department, Sandra Allen, as well as Theatre Ballet director Jan Dijkwel, asked that I develop a tutorial that would present the terms, their definitions, and multimedia so that students could easily connect terms to movement. This in turn would help students as they …

“Interaction, the direct effect that one kind of particle has on another, any of four fundamental ways in which elementary particles and bodies can influence each other, classified as strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravitational (www.dictionary.com).” Our interest in interaction and collaboration began the semester before we started our ORCA research. We took a movement analysis class and partnered together on several assignments. We had the opportunity to ‘people watch’ or to analyze personal movement and come to conclusions about what movement can really tell us. Many times in the analysis process, we found our conclusions to be contradictory. This inspired …

Discovering A Lost Composer: Vilma Webenau And Her Music, Carolyn Dehdari, Dr. Harrison Powley

Walking down the streets of Vienna, my eyes pass over new faces and names, wondering if I will ever find something familiar. I think of all those that would be familiar in a different time: Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, Schoenberg. But there is one face I am looking for that few others would recognize; it is a woman’s face, a woman who composed, taught music, and worked with Schoenberg. This woman was Vilma Weber von Webenau, who saw many decades of progress and destruction in her life from 1875 to 1953.

Icons Of Death In Mexican Folk Art, Rodrigo Suarez, Linda A. Sullivan
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Death has always remained a mystery to humanity. Nearly every culture and religion has its theories regarding the afterlife; some believing in the afterlife and others in the continuity of life through reincarnation. However, there are probably very few events of human life that at the same time are so unknown and yet so ritualized as death is. Almost every nation has a holiday to honor the faithful departed, celebrate the continuity of life or simply reflect on the mysticism of death. And the Mexican tradition is one of the most ancient rituals still alive and celebrated as it has …

Peer Recordings, J. S. Bergman, R. T. Lee, Dr. David Brown
Journal of Undergraduate Research
“Peer Recordings” is a pilot project designed to build an archive of student recorded etudes for use as a pedagogical resource to teach style and musicianship. This project provides advanced trumpet students with valuable recording experience as they perform and record etudes at a high level. These peer recordings will be an invaluable tool in motivating other students to perform on similarly high levels.
