Pro-America Or Pro-Mexico: The Role Of The Spanish-American Press In The Southwest, Kelly K. Wight, Dr. Alf Pratte

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), violent movements against the United States of America sprang up throughout all of southern Mexico. A huge surge of Mexican patriotism united most of the Mexican citizens against the United States and its influence on their culture. This sense of Mexican patriotism did not exist in the northern parts of Mexico, however. In the areas of California to Texas that were once a part of Mexico, virtually no uprisings or movements occurred resisting the assimilation of these areas into the United States of America. The Mexicans in these areas typically accepted the United States as …

Understanding Islam Through Art Education, Amy Blake Spencer, Donna Kay Beattie

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With the magnitude of the conflicts in the middle-east, it is increasingly important to teach students tolerance for people of the Islamic faith. As an Art Educator, I found this an ideal time and opportunity to research the many aspects of Islamic art and to encapsulate these principles into a visual arts curriculum unit for students at the ninth and tenth grade levels. The unit includes all elements of Art Education: Art History, Studio, Aesthetics, Art Criticism, and Visual Culture.

Of Tradition And Decision: The Seeds Of Life Within Us, Chelsy Smith Walker, Bryon Draper 2013 Brigham Young University

Of Tradition And Decision: The Seeds Of Life Within Us, Chelsy Smith Walker, Bryon Draper

Journal of Undergraduate Research

“Every man is a quotation from all his ancestors,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson. This ancestral quotation created a dialogue that later became an exhibition. My lifelong dream became a reality through the realization of a one-woman show in Gallery 303 of the Harris Fine Arts Center at Brigham Young University. The show was exhibited March 18-27, 2003, and discussed intergenerational change, the traditions and habits we carry from our parents, and the influence we have on our children. Viewers were prompted to muse upon the path that they had traveled because of the road their ancestors have taken, to contemplate …

Microbes: An Educational Picture Book, Heather Stratton, Richard Hull, William McCleary 2013 Brigham Young University

Microbes: An Educational Picture Book, Heather Stratton, Richard Hull, William Mccleary

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With all the hype and paranoia in our media today about disease causing microbes, the need arises for a more complete picture of these tiny organisms and some of their other roles in our lives to be presented. I have written a children’s story in an attempt to do just this. The book is titled Microbes. It is an acknowledgement of the dangers of microorganisms, but also an explanation of their necessary influence.

Summary Of Creative Research Grant And Artistic Statement, Jason E. Steed, Linda Sullivan 2013 Brigham Young University

Summary Of Creative Research Grant And Artistic Statement, Jason E. Steed, Linda Sullivan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

On receiving my ORCA Scholarship funding, I began development for an interactive multimedia CD ROM project for the BYU Museum of Art. I presented my research and proposal to David Hawkinson, photographer for the museum, and he offered me insight as to where the emphasis of this project should be placed. I directed my scope to one exhibit, 150 Years of American Painting from 1794-1944. This is the only permanent collection at the museum, and all property and copyrights are owned by the MOA.

Images Of Newspapers In American Genre Painting From 1830 To 1865, Jonathan Wardle, Dr. P. Alf Pratte

Journal of Undergraduate Research

At the suggestion of a professor, I wrote a 20-page term paper on images of newspapers in American genre painting for a history of communications class. At first I was going to conduct a general survey of images of newspapers and journalists in American art, but some interesting findings in my early research prompted me to take a more detailed look at images of newspapers in genre painting, specifically from 1830 to 1865.

The Bare Mannequins Of Raphael Soyer: Images Of Depression Era America, Michelle E. Lee, Dr. Mark Magleby

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the tumultuous years following the crash of the New York Stock Market in October 1929 and the Great Depression, a great need emerged to provide the millions of unemployed with some type of meaningful employment. One of the groups to be hit the hardest was the country’s struggling artists. As one historian aptly stated, “There had never been a time in our history when artists were so personally affected by physical need, so involved in economic action, so moved to political expression and organization, or so caught up in esthetic debate.”1 Because so many had been touched, artists became …

Illustrations For Aesop’S Fables: The Creation Of A Series With A Preliminary Historical And Aesthetic Analysis, Alisa L. Gordon, Robert Barrett, Richard Hull 2013 Brigham Young University

Illustrations For Aesop’S Fables: The Creation Of A Series With A Preliminary Historical And Aesthetic Analysis, Alisa L. Gordon, Robert Barrett, Richard Hull

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Aesop’s fables are some of the most well known stories, as well as some of the most widely illustrated. They are typically very short, have only a few characters, and have a simple plot. Consequently, the stories provide excellent subject matters for pieces in my illustration portfolio. I can communicate a story in one image, be imaginative, and still expect the story to be recognizable. Art directors will immediately be able to assess my visual story-telling abilities as well as my creativity through my interpretation of some of these well known stories. My objective is to create a series of …

Superimposition Of Cultures, Becky Ravenberg, Dr. Mark Magleby

Journal of Undergraduate Research

By means of my photography, I have highlighted the Anglo and Hispanic communities that are in the immediate proximity of this university and in other communities in Utah County. I did this by superimposing photos of both cultures. These photo illustrations were displayed in two separate shows.

Thoughts Collected, Brandon Gunn, Wayne Kimball 2013 Brigham Young University

Thoughts Collected, Brandon Gunn, Wayne Kimball

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I have decided that memories are like layers of clear plastic with writing on them. As one sheet is held, it can be read clearly. When another is placed on top of it, the writing changes, as well as its meaning. Different words are placed next to each other than those that appear on each sheet alone. When a third sheet is added, what was one readable may turn in to an illegible mess, though the clarity and meaning of each individual sheet remains intact. When the words are replaced with pictures, the pictures too are able to modify each …

Media & Communications In Mongolia, Mikell Johnson, Joel Campbell 2013 Brigham Young University

Media & Communications In Mongolia, Mikell Johnson, Joel Campbell

Mongolia is located just north of China and south of eastern Russia. The country is occupies 1.565 million square miles (CIA) yet is home to a small population of about 2.7 million Mongolians. Mongolians are a nomadic people by tradition and nearly half of the population still practices this lifestyle. From 1921 until 1990 Mongolia was ruled under a communist form of government. This fact had a huge impact on the way new communication and media technologies were implemented in Mongolia’s public. This paper will first attempt to give an accurate description of historical communication and media advances in Mongolia …

Techniques Of Ceramic Artists In Senegal, West Africa, Amy Beth Harrison, Von Allen 2013 Brigham Young University

Techniques Of Ceramic Artists In Senegal, West Africa, Amy Beth Harrison, Von Allen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Information is essential for ceramic artists to increase technical knowledge and as a source of inspiration. With the chance of visiting Senegal, West Africa on a study abroad, I wanted to take advantage of my time there to research the techniques of ceramic artists. My goal was to find out how ceramic artists were working and present this information to students at BYU. I also wanted to acknowledge the contributions of undocumented artists.

The Hidden Genius Of Hans Memling, Courtney Jensen, Dr. Martha Peacock 2013 Brigham Young University

The Hidden Genius Of Hans Memling, Courtney Jensen, Dr. Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The fifteenth century heralded a revolution in Northern painting, known as the Northern Renaissance. This movement was headed by the Flemish Primitifs, a group of artists who created works of unprecedented naturalism. A key player in this movement was Hans Memling. Although born in Germany, he adopted the Flemish style, with its intense detail and rich, glowing colors.

Marion Mahony Griffin: A Female Architect And Her Designs, Emily Morris, Dr. Heather Jensen 2013 Brigham Young University

Marion Mahony Griffin: A Female Architect And Her Designs, Emily Morris, Dr. Heather Jensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When one thinks back to the architecture of the early 20th Century, names such as Louis Sullivan, Mies Van der Rohe, and Frank Lloyd Wright will be the first to come to mind. Rarely does the name of a female architect come to the thoughts of one who is not familiar with architectural history. Although these names are less familiar to us, they are by no means less important. At a time when there did not seem to be a place for women in architectural history, a few, such as Marion Mahony Griffin, were already making history. Women in modern …

Late Hellenistic And Roman Era Collections Of The Palmyra Museum: Exhibition Design And Catalogue Publication Of Palmyrene Funerary Portraits In Tadmor, Syria, Wendy Carr, Dr. Cynthia Finlayson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The faculty mentor for my project was Dr. Cynthia Finlayson of the Art History Department. The work I proposed to perform with Dr. Finlayson centered around five years of her previous research in Syrian museums. Dr. Finlayson had studied the ancient oasis city of Palmyra in Syria, including the female portrait busts placed at the head of funerary monuments. The ancient city of Palmyra (today Tadmor) contains centuries of history from the Roman occupation and remains today as a melting pot of cultures and peoples.

The Gothic Revival, David Amott, Dr. Cynthia Finlayson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Gothic Revival was an important architectural movement of the nineteenth century. It was a result of the nineteenth century Romantic fascination with the Middle Ages. People looked to that era for inspiration in all arts, including architecture. The United States had no authentic Gothic background, so the architect Richard Upjohn became a key player in the Gothic Revival movement there. He transplanted the style of architecture from his native England to the young nation. Among his many commissions were the Trinity Church and the Church of the Holy Communion, both located in New York City.

Film Classification Systems As Indicators Of Cultural Values: An Exploratory Cross-National Study, Marin Turley Bradshaw, Eliza Tanner Hawkins 2013 Brigham Young University

Film Classification Systems As Indicators Of Cultural Values: An Exploratory Cross-National Study, Marin Turley Bradshaw, Eliza Tanner Hawkins

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Virtually every country has developed some kind of a film classification system. In the United States the classification system is more commonly known as a film’s “rating.” The purposes of the classification are (1) to protect vulnerable audiences, especially young children and (2) to allow film makers to show their work in public theaters for the development of art in the country. These systems have evolved over time due to trends in media effects research and, more importantly, the cultural values and social mores of the societies where the classification systems are developed. Just as no group of people has …
