Heritage Still Life Paintings, Sarah E. Cannon, Joseph Ostraff
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Genealogy is the second most used resource on the Internet. This is not surprising to me, because heritage largely defines a person, and people are interested in their roots. Within the field of art, there has been a substantial amount of work devoted to the topic of personal heritage, and I believe there is a vast amount yet to be done. Art can have a powerful way of inspiring people, of presenting new ideas, and challenging our perceptions. Rather than approaching my ancestry from a literal narrative approach, I wanted to bring to life remnants that certain individuals in my …

Contemporary Encaustics, Kristin Glaus, Joseph Ostraff
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Encaustic painting has a very deep tradition in the visual arts. The technique was used as far back as 100 AD, its roots established in Greece where beeswax was used as caulking in the joints of barges. Eventually the Greeks mixed pigments with the beeswax, adding an aesthetic value to the barges. These painted warships led Greek artists to use beeswax in an innovative way—on flat easel paintings.

We live in a separated world. Despite extensive technological advances in global connectivity, our understanding and knowledge of other cultures is quite limited. We gain small amounts of information through history lessons and brief news reports. Sometimes we are fortunate enough to hear descriptions from someone who has experienced a culture first hand, but for the most part we remain removed from other societies. For my research, I wanted to take a step forward in expanding my boundaries as well as provide a similar opportunity to others through my work. I choose to spend a month in Hong Kong photographically …

Symbolism As A Means Of Expression, Steven Carter, Garold Barton
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My primary purpose in pursuing this research project has been to enhance my ability to communicate specific ideas through my artwork. It seems rather evident that the contemporary art scene has become increasingly devoid of morals. Critics’ reactions to the bizarre and unwholesome (which seems to be the trend of much of the so-called “cutting-edge” work) are varied. Some would applaud such trash as ‘profound’ and ‘visionary’. Many boundaries have been challenged and discarded. During a trip to New York this summer I visited the Museum of Modern Art. I was not surprised to find some rather disgusting and offensive …

Harold Coletta: Preserving The Life Of A Great Musician, Caroline Margaret Maxwell
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Eight cupboards stood in front of me, full of materials that once belonged to Harold Coletta, a prominent, influential violist of the twentieth century. I unlocked one of them, pulled out a stack of papers, and started sorting through them. Hidden treasures began to appear among the concert programs, snapshots, and letters: a photograph of Pablo Casals; a letter from William Primrose; a picture of a rugged, wavy-haired young man in Japan touring with Toscanini; a student ID card from Juilliard. A certificate from the Universal Life Church read “This is to certify that the bearer hereof, Rev. Harold Coletta, …

The following project consists of 11 color lithographs that address different moral issues of genetic technology. Lithography is a form of printmaking where images are hand printed on a press, using either stones or aluminum plates to hold the inked image. The following is an overview of how my project began, a discussion of some of its major concepts, and my thoughts on where it has pointed my future work.

Situating Caterina Van Hemessen In The Canon Of Sixteenthcentury Dutch Portraitists, Kim Y. Egbert, Dr. Martha L. Peacock
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In 1546 Francesco da Sangallo declared, “There are [many women] in Flanders and in France and even in Italy who paint in such away that in Italy their pictures are held in high esteem.”1 One such woman was Caterina van Hemessen, a Sixteenth-Century Dutch Portraitist. Trained by her father, who was an accomplished painter himself, van Hemessen painted portraits of herself, her sister, and prominent individuals from her community. She lived a relatively long life (from 1528 to after 1587), but curiously, her last painting is dated just after her marriage to the local church organist, Christian de Morien, in …

Reflections On Europe And The Visual Portrayal Of A Culture, Jennie M. Doezie, James C. Christensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The intent and purpose for which this grant was awarded was to assist me in my goal of producing a well-illustrated children’s book. My greatest artistic interest lies in depicting other cultures, and my desire is to educate children of these cultures through my paintings. The original basis for completion of my project entailed accompanying the BYU “Art in Europe” Study Abroad program to Spain and Italy in the spring of 1997. There I was to experience, visually research, and document those countries for seven weeks, under the instruction of my faculty mentor, James C. Christensen. There from I would …

I was excited to work on my project and create my choreography. I studied out the music and broke it down into counts. I found the different accents of each phrase. I made choices as to where I would follow the music and where I would go against the music. I had to be careful and watch how the music and movement were relating. It would have been easy to choreograph movement that paralleled the music. It would have been comfortable to use movement that I already knew and had used and performed before. I was challenged and had to …

Researching Traditional And Contemporary Irish Dance In Ireland, Ananda Henricksen, Colleen West
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Irish Dance has many styles and forms both in traditional and contemporary dance. It has become a world wide dance form through the spread of the Irish Diaspora and contemporary shows. Although Irish dance in America is still connected to Ireland, it still takes time for changes to arrive. Also it is somewhat removed from the roots of Irish Dance. Because of the separation between the two countries I decided to go to Ireland and study Irish Dance in its native environment. I attended a two week limited enrollment and intensive workshop on Irish Dance at Irish World Music Centre …

Since its inception, the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition has grown tremendously in size and has since moved the headquarters to the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The ability to choreograph is one of the most important skills a dancer can possess, particularly when preparing to be a teacher. This semester, I focused on choreography within the Ballroom Dance Genre to further develop my skills. I choreographed three different styles, the American Smooth Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz. Each of these dances varies greatly in style which gave me an opportunity to experiment with different types of choreography.

Experience in choreography is a vital part of the education of a dance major, particularly one like myself who hopes to pursue a career in dance teaching. Unfortunately, as students, the opportunity to create choreography which is exhitibited in an audience-attended performance can be rare, perhaps only once in the college experience with a student’s “senior project.” In addition, each semester there are so many students accomplishing their senior projects, that it can become difficult to work closely with a faculty mentor who would facilitate the correct learning and maturing process that ought to develop. The maturation of a dancer …

Transitioning Traditional Dance To The Stage: Dominican Folk Dance In Concert, Morgan De La Cruz, Pat Debenham
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Born in the rural heart of the Dominican Republic, Dominican folk dance has evolved along a trajectory taking it from its backcountry origins to become integrated as a fundamental part of Dominican culture. In fact, dances such as the merengue and the bachata are not only staples of social gatherings, but they have increased in sophistication and complexity to achieve representation on the public stage. These two dances have even outgrown the physical boundaries of the island and have arrived in the United States, carried in the veins of every Dominican who immigrates (De La Cruz). The Dominican dance, most …

Staged Ukrainian Dance In Canada And Ukraine: A Comparative Study, Quincy Mark Robinson, Colleen West
Journal of Undergraduate Research
When Ukrainians migrated to Canada in the early 1900’s, they found themselves in a completely different cultural environment. To help support each other in this foreign environment the Ukrainians participated in many cultural activities, one of which was staged Ukrainian folk dance. In the 1990’s staged Ukrainian dance in Canada began to change because of the immigration of choreographers from Ukraine. With the fall of the Soviet Union, many choreographers became unemployed and immigrated to Canada to work with the Ukrainian dance movement there. These choreographers brought with them new ideas and movements and helped spur a change in the …

A Study Of Irish Culture And History And Its Preservation Through Irish Dance, Erica Burgin
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I spent three weeks in Ireland this summer studying the culture, history, and especially the dance of that country. I wanted to show that Irish dance has played a pivotal role in preserving Ireland’s cultural identity since before the spread of Christianity. I focused my time on studying the historical climate of Ireland from its roots to current times, learning how dance evolved from its early communal roots to its current status, and researching the role of costumes and their development. I attended Blas Iomlan, an intensive two-week program designed to give dancers a taste of Irish dance from its …

Female Printmaking Exchange, Anna Laurie Mackay, Garold Barton
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Within our local working art community there seems to be minorities. Women artists being one and Printmakers being another. By organizing a print exchange and having a exhibition including 25 women the hope was to work collaboratively and establish unity as women artists and printmakers. The participants were carefully chosen, with the help of my mentor Gary Barton, out of professional artists, faculty of the surrounding universities and MFA and BFA students from Brigham Young University and The University of Utah. The diversity of the participants resulted in a eclectic collection of prints for our exchange. To further individualize this …
