Summary Of Creative Research Grant Results And Artistic Statement Of “Dance: Expressions Of Life”, Natalie Rhodes Wilson, Pat Debenham
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Over the course of this year my creative project entitled, “Dance: Expressions of Life,” has evolved from portraying a tragic accident in my life to encompassing a lifetime of internal growth that includes more than the accident itself. The concluding stages of the work are still in progress. The final performance is scheduled to be held in the Richard Building Theatre in December 1997.

The project I have completed, with the help of the ORCA scholarship, as my BFA project for Illustration includes a 25 page research paper and a 1 minute 30 second computer animated film called Revealing DNA. Research for the project began in February 1997, and the entire project was completed by July 1997. The film, printed scenes from the film, and the paper were displayed at the BFA show in the Brimhall Gallery from August 1 – August 17.

Thanatology, Kristen Walker Smith, Cathy Black
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Having lost my own father to cancer when I was seven I felt that my modern dance choreographic senior project would be a wonderful opportunity to explore both dance and death. I was excited to portray through movement the emotions associated with death and dying. I felt that with my in depth research I would be able to come to some sort of conclusion concerning both subjects. However I found, as cheesy as it sounds, that the more I learned the less I knew for sure.

Discovering The Egg: An Investigation Into The Art Of Solo Performance In Dance, Marney Schaumann, Pat Debenham
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The elements of choreography and performance are vital to the craft of a dancer. All dancers in a University setting invest a majority of their time studying both disciplines. Choreography is an outlet of expression, a journey, a process, that dancers use to explore the world around them, and the people, places, emotions, and ideas in it. Performance is the culmination and fruition of the time, energy, and effort put into choreography. It is the presentation of a refined idea in motion.

Psychological Implications For A Performing Artist, Kristin Silvestro, Pam Musil
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As a modern dance major at Brigham Young University and a frequent stage performer I have always been interested in learning about the full potential of the body and how to call upon it as needed. As performing artists, dancers are constantly training themselves to reach an optimal level of performance every time they are on stage. What does it take to reach a “peak performance” or enter “the zone” as many researchers in the athletic field call it? While there are obviously physiological implications to consider when evaluating peak performance, I would like to focus on the frequently overlooked …

I guess I can write about a couple of the different aspects of this project. I am under the assumption that a paper of this nature is intended to be a report on how and why I did this project and how I interpret its results. This said, I will continue.

The Public Relations Failures In Hispanic Immigration Since September 11, Stephanie Smith, Richard Long
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Hispanic immigration is one of the most far reaching issues in America, but ironically it is also one of the most ignored. Despite approximately eight million immigrants currently living in the country illegally, 60 percent of whom are Mexicans, there appears to be no end to the mounting numbers. These immigrants are appearing to make a significant impact to the growth of the US economy, however. The total number of low-skilled jobs will increase from 53.2 million in 2000 to 60.9 million by 2010. As native-born Americans continue receiving higher educations, Hispanic immigrants will be relied upon to fill that …

The Relationship Between Music Education And Mathematical Achievement, Rebekah L. Stuetz, Dr. Paul Broomhead
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the extra-musical benefits of music education. In particular, the study of the relationship between musical instruction and mathematical achievement, or spatial-temporal reasoning, has received a great deal of publicity. This research, known as neuromusicology, has become a platform for the advocacy of a child’s right to receive a music education in the public school setting. However, there are many music educators who have justifiable reservations regarding this platform. There appear to be two inherent problems in using neuromusicology research as a basis for advocacy in music education: the misapplication and …
