Seeing England: Responding To The English Landscape With Writing And Visual Art, Amy Bennion, Joseph Ostraff

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Artists have been exploring the connections between the visual image and the written word for centuries. Often these explorations result in self discovery. For my project I continued this tradition of artistic exploration and my results were indeed personal in nature and furthered the discovery of my art.

Historic Syria, Sally A. McDonald, Dr. Cynthia Finlayson 2013 Brigham Young University

Historic Syria, Sally A. Mcdonald, Dr. Cynthia Finlayson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

It is hard to know where one will be taken when researching an obscure topic. It is the exhilaration of the mysterious as well as the frustration of the unexpected that takes the researcher on a journey into the unknown, leading them to an unforeseen destination. This was what happened to me during the past year as I researched the costuming of the Ottoman Empire for exhibition purposes at the Azem Palace in Damascus Syria. Being one of the few remaining palaces from the Ottoman Era, the Azem Palace has been turned into a museum that houses valuable artifacts from …

The Collections Of The ‘Azm Palace In Damascus: Men’S Costume And Embroidery, Danielle Hurd, Dr. Cynthia Finlayson 2013 Brigham Young University

The Collections Of The ‘Azm Palace In Damascus: Men’S Costume And Embroidery, Danielle Hurd, Dr. Cynthia Finlayson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

From the outside the ‘Azm Palace is almost indiscernible amongst a maze of souqs, restaurants, offices and homes in the old city in Damascus. Much more than a building, it is an icon of the political and cultural heritage of the Syrian people. Constructed in 1749 by As’ad Pasha Al ‘Azm, the Syrian governor appointed by the Ottoman court, the palace took three years to build, and occupied the majority of the craftsmen from the guilds in Damascus and the united provinces of Sidon, Tripoli and Hama. The palace itself is a juxtaposition of the traditional oriental customs and the …

What I Know About Heaven, Robert M. Gardner, Robert Marshall 2013 Brigham Young University

What I Know About Heaven, Robert M. Gardner, Robert Marshall

Journal of Undergraduate Research

King David the Psalmist, Walt Whitman, William Wordsworth, Abraham on his journey to Egypt—These illustrious men hold something in common with most of humanity; for they, like many unnamed, have found solace and inspiration in the twinkling of a distant star or the majestic swell of billowing clouds in the sunset. I am among them.

Covering The Once And Future King: An Exercise In Book Jacket Illustration, Meghan S. Flint, Bethanne Andersen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The legend of King Arthur is unmatched in valor and glory as well as tragedy. Because of this, Arthurian works are continually created in every media. I have joined in this effort by illustrating a series of book jackets for T. H. White’s literary series The Once and Future King. The five books in this series are titled: The Sword in the Stone, The Queen of Air and Darkness, The Ill-Made Knight, The Candle in the Wind, and The Book of Merlyn. Together they introduce a myriad of themes, moods, and characters that create a complex story.

Tapa Cloth: Creating A Tongan Treasure, Kesseli Carmichael, Paul Adams 2013 Brigham Young University

Tapa Cloth: Creating A Tongan Treasure, Kesseli Carmichael, Paul Adams

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Tapa cloth is one of Tonga’s most treasured possessions. Each design painted on the surface of the pounded bark contains cultural value and significance. The process of making a full piece of tapa is long and rigorous, which adds to the value of the piece. Tapa cloth is traditionally given at two major life events: weddings and funerals. Before a wedding takes place, the family of the bride presents a large amount of tapa to the family of the groom. In a funeral setting, it is given to the family of the deceased.

Lds Journalists: Key To Establish A Unique Model For Moral Reporting At Byu, Heather C. Bowser, Dr. Kevin L. Stoker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

One challenge for LDS journalists is finding a way to combine gospel principles with the mission of journalism to; according to the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics, seek truth, “promote the flow of information,” and “stimulate high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism.” Contemporary journalism has done a good job of seeking truth and promoting information flow, but has endured one scandal after another in which journalists have violated ethical standards.

American Pop Culture: A Thai Perspective, Chris Coy, Linda Sullivan 2013 Brigham Young University

American Pop Culture: A Thai Perspective, Chris Coy, Linda Sullivan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The construction of national identity amidst an ever-increasing influx of external ideas and foreign ideologies is an interesting phenomenon. In what ways does the popular culture of a country with access to all forms of media, such as the United States of America, influence smaller communities of individuals in other parts of the world? Questions of a similar nature were posed as I prepared to travel to Thailand in the summer of 2004 with fellow Media Arts student Scott Christopherson. It was our intent to document the influence of American pop culture on the ordinary Thai individuals that we came …

Transcription Project Of Composition Suite No. 5 By Marin Marais, Eric Lew, Dr. Claudine Bigelow

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1889, a revival of early instruments no longer used (then and now) was undertaken by the Société des Instruments Anciens. The purpose of this revival was to study and practice instruments once preferred but now almost completely unused and unknown in practice and performance. Among these instruments were the clavicembalo, the viola da gamba, and the viol d’amore. These instruments are still almost unknown to our concert rooms today. Because of this, much of the music literature for viola da gamba is rarely performed and studied. The purpose of this project is to continue the efforts of the Société …

Re-Establishing And Developing The Byu Chapter Of The American String Teachers’ Association, Melissa Warr, Dr. Andrew Dabczynski

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Part of the mission of BYU is to gain skills that can be used to serve others in the community. In the School of Music, one of the best ways to both gain these skills and serve others is through professional organizations. My mentor, Andrew Dabczynski, and I recently re-established the BYU chapter of the American String Teachers’ Association (ASTA). Involvement in this professional organization provides students educational and service opportunities while still in school and encourages students to continue activity in the organization when they begin their careers.

Restoring Gänseliesel: A Piece Of Music History Reborn, Michelle Clements Flowers, Dr. E. Harrison Powley 2013 Brigham Young University

Restoring Gänseliesel: A Piece Of Music History Reborn, Michelle Clements Flowers, Dr. E. Harrison Powley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The history of the melodrama Gänseliesel by Luise Greger and Emilie Riedel combines two of the most prevalent images of Germany: folklore and the shadow of World War II. Premiered at the Baden Baden Stadttheater on December 10, 1933 it features a host of fairy tale characters including dwarves, a frog prince, and – like the Grimm’s fairy tales – a little goose girl in an enchanted forest. Unfortunately Germany during the 1930s was not at all like Gänseliesel’s idyllic world and within a few short years of Gänseliesel’s premiere World War II had erupted in full force. During the …

Home, Family, And Nation – Inventory Of The Manuscript Collections Of Lucy Broadwood’S And Alice Gomme’S Pioneering Folksong Research In Great Britain, Sarah Perry, Jerry Jaccard

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Lucy Broadwood was a researcher with a specific interest in English folk song, including children’s singing games. She was at the forefront of the English folk song, folk dance, and folk art revival that set the stage for widespread reform in school music, serious musical composition, and music publishing in the British Isles. She was a charter investigator and member of the English Folk Song Society, an organization chartered in 1899 that is still supported by the Crown under the modern title of the English Folk Dance and Song Society. From such seemingly simple circumstances, this woman exercised great influence …

Sharing Cultures: Destination Zambia, Erica Williams, Dr. Dale Cressman 2013 Brigham Young University

Sharing Cultures: Destination Zambia, Erica Williams, Dr. Dale Cressman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project began with a flight to Lusaka, Zambia with a non-profit organization based in America Fork, Mothers Without Borders. The program consisted of daily service activities, nightly dinners with a Zambian family, and lodging in a hostel in Lusaka. Every morning we rode a bus to a government school in Lusaka, where we taught classes in nutrition, first aid, hygiene, HIV/AIDS prevention, arts and crafts, and recreation. I personally taught hygiene, using glitter transferred from hand to hand to show how germs move and demonstrating washing hands removes germs. It was amazing how minimal their understanding was about basic …

The Factors That Generate A Response To Newspaper Advertising, Tara J. V. Flake, Russell Mouritsen 2013 Brigham Young University

The Factors That Generate A Response To Newspaper Advertising, Tara J. V. Flake, Russell Mouritsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Advertising departments worldwide face difficult and costly decisions every day. Their decisions include things like how to portray their product in the best way, what their advertisement should look and/or sound like and where their advertisement should be placed, just to name a few. Once their decisions are made and the ad is publicized, all a company can do is hope that it generates the results they want from the audience. Ideally, it will be well received and the audience responds positively and takes some sort of action. However, an ad that fails for any reason makes advertising a great …

Ottoman And European Influence In The Ninteenth-Century Bridal Collection Of The Azem Palace, Damascus, Syria, Julianne Parker 2013 Brigham Young University

Ottoman And European Influence In The Ninteenth-Century Bridal Collection Of The Azem Palace, Damascus, Syria, Julianne Parker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1829, Ottoman Emperor Mahmud II issued a proclamation mandating that all men under his rule must replace their traditional clothing with the “modern” European-style jacket and trousers.1 The interest and appeal of Europe had never been so publicly sanctioned in Ottoman history. The western influence was perhaps most greatly felt in outlying provinces like Damascus, whose government had long been semi-autonomous under local governors, including the Azem family, residents of the Azem Palace. As European entrepreneurs, statesmen, and tourists continued to visit Damascus, local Damascenes inevitably began to imitate these exotic foreigners. Fashion was one of the easiest ways …

ABECHE, CHAD—Sudanese funded military groups known as the Janjaweed have been attacking villages in the Darfur region of Sudan since early 2003. The group claims to be looking for insurgents scattered across the region. The Janjaweed have violently attacked villages, strategically killing men to instill fear in the lives of possible rebels. They have burned hundreds of villages and raped tens of thousands of women and young girls. They have also gunned down nearly a hundred thousand people since 2003. Almost two million people have been forced to flee their homes and are now internally displaced within Sudan. Another two-hundred …
