Responding To Change In Reproductive Endocrinology Fellowships, William Schlaff, MD 2014 Jefferson Medical College

Responding To Change In Reproductive Endocrinology Fellowships, William Schlaff, Md

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers

Thirty years ago, in the days when I was a reproductive endocrinology fellow, the field looked far different than it does today. Reproductive endocrinologists at that time were most assuredly the experts in diagnosing and treating infertility, but were often, if not usually the go-to doctors for patients with congenital uterovaginal anomalies, endometriosis, and those in need of complicated endoscopic procedures. The REI was not only the authority on polycystic ovary syndrome and other hormonal problems, but often the leader in addressing clinical issues in contraception, abnormal uterine bleeding, and menopause. In the early to mid-1980’s infertility treatment, such as …

Community Health Sciences

Introduction: The use of hormonal implants has gained positive traction in family planning programs in recent times. Compared to other popular methods, such as long-term reversible intrauterine devices, the use of hormonal implants as a family planning method has distinct advantages in terms of long-term efficiency and better user compliance and availability. This paper presents a study protocol to document and evaluate the efficacy, safety, and acceptability of Femplant (contraceptive implant) in Pakistan during the first year of its use among married women of reproductive age (18-44 years) at clinics in two provinces of Pakistan (Sindh and Punjab).

Anterior Cervical Foraminotomy: Short Term Outcomes In Patients With Isolated Cervical Radiculopathy, Howard Eisenbrock, Mark Rivkin, Amir R. Dehdashti 2014 Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine

Anterior Cervical Foraminotomy: Short Term Outcomes In Patients With Isolated Cervical Radiculopathy, Howard Eisenbrock, Mark Rivkin, Amir R. Dehdashti

Research Day

Intro: Anterior cervical foraminotomy (ACF) is a novel approach involving direct decompression of nerve from an offending agent without fusion. Historically, several anterior and posterior approaches were utilized to treat cervical radiculopathy. Anterior cervical discectomy necessitates fusion and is subject to adjacent segment disease as well as loss of ROM. Posterior laminoforaminotomy seldom allows for removal of disc fragment and is associated with higher postoperative pain.

Methods: Between May 2010 and March 2013, 16 patients with one or two level cervical spondylosis with radiculopathy without myelopathy who failed conservative therapies such as anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy or injections underwent anterior …

On the basis of pre-specified inclusion criteria, we analyzed causes of maternal death from datasets.

We aggregated country level estimates to …

Cancer Diagnosis During Pregnancy: Evaluating The Challenges Faced By Oncologists, Shannon Kaye Mulligan 2014 The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston

Cancer Diagnosis During Pregnancy: Evaluating The Challenges Faced By Oncologists, Shannon Kaye Mulligan

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Cancer during pregnancy is occurring more often than in the past, and it is estimated that cancer is diagnosed in approximately 1/1000 pregnancies. A consensus exists that management of these patients should prioritize survival of the mother and minimize teratogenic effects to the fetus, and utilize a multidisciplinary approach, involving medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and a maternal fetal medicine specialist. In spite of this consensus, there is not a standardized approach for treating cancer in women diagnosed during pregnancy. Due to the relative infrequency of this situation in the oncologic setting, the aims of this study were …

Support Desired By Women Following Termination Of Pregnancy For A Fetal Anomaly, Aarti Ramdaney

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

With the rapidly evolving field of prenatal testing, there is a growing need to provide support for women pursuing a termination of pregnancy following the discovery of a fetal anomaly. Previous studies have documented that women in this situation often feel unsupported after the procedure, but the type of resources desired by this population remains undetermined. A longitudinal study was performed in 51 women terminating for a fetal anomaly at a private clinic at the time of the procedure, at 6 weeks, and at 3 months following the event. Surveys were kept anonymous and investigated the awareness and utilization of …

Why 'Down Under' Is A Cut Above: A Comparison Of Rates Of And Reasons For Caesarean Section In England And Australia, Samantha J. Prosser, Yvette D. Miller, Rachel Thompson, Maggie Redshaw

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Most studies examining determinants of rising rates of caesarean section have examined patterns in documented reasons for caesarean over time in a single location. Further insights could be gleaned from cross-cultural research that examines practice patterns in locations with disparate rates of caesarean section at a single time point.

Methods: We compared both rates of and main reason for pre-labour and intrapartum caesarean between England and Queensland, Australia, using data from retrospective cross-sectional surveys of women who had recently given birth in England (n = 5,250) and Queensland (n = 3,467).
