Kamus Dewan (KD4) is the latest issue of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Malay monolingual dictionary. Beside the native Malay words, the dictionary also records a great number of entries of loan words from foreign languages such as Arabic, which is labeled 'Ar'. The loan words normally do not deviate from the narrowing, extension or variation in its actual meaning. As such, the study done is more focused on the aspects of accuracy of the Malay meaning than its original meaning in Arabic with al-Mu‘jam al-Wasit as a key reference in comparing and checking of its original meaning in Arabic besides …

Collocation is a universal linguistic phenomenon and has been a common concern among linguists, lexicographers as well as language pedagogues and those involved in translation works. Arabic language has paid special attention to collocation usage, although in the early days it had not been recognized nor termed as collocation. Arabic collocations have existed in the Jahiliah poetry, or Islamic texts such as the Holy Qur’an as well as in language and literature books. This thesis characterizes collocations in the Arabic language, by classifying grammatical and semantic distributional patterns of collocations and investigates the problems of its translation into Malay language. …

Phillipson’s paper Lingua franca or lingua frankensteinia? addresses key concerns of linguists and politicians in the Outer and Expanding Circles, especially in relation to the spread of foreign languages and their threat to local languages, national aspirations, culture, religion, and identity. As a native of Lebanon, a multilingual country where Arabic, French, and English add to the linguistic complexity of Lebanese society, I agree with Phillipson that language policy-makers need to be aware of the dangers of the uncritical promotion of English and what he identifies as linguistic imperialism (Phillipson, 1992).
