สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาปัญหาการแปลคำซ้ำ ที่พบในวรรณกรรมเยาวชนเรื่อง เมื่อคุณตาคุณยายยังเด็ก เล่ม 1 ประพันธ์โดย ทิพย์วาณี สนิทวงศ์ ณ อยุธยา จากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ โดยใช้ต้นฉบับ 10 บทเป็นกรณีศึกษา ปัญหาการแปลคำซ้ำยังไม่ได้มีการศึกษาอย่างจริงจังเมื่อเทียบกับปัญหาการแปลจากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษด้านอื่น ๆ ทั้ง ๆ ที่ไม้ยมกเป็นเครื่องหมายกำกับคำซ้ำที่มีการใช้อย่างแพร่หลายในภาษาไทยมาอย่างช้านาน นอกจากนี้กระบวนการซ้ำคำเพื่อสร้างคำใหม่ก็เป็นปรากฏการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในหลาย ๆ ภาษา และทั้งภาษาไทยและภาษาอังกฤษก็มีการซ้ำคำเช่นกัน สารนิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาขั้นตอนในการแปล วิเคราะห์ปัญหาในการแปล ตลอดจนนำเสนอแนวทางการแก้ปัญหานั้นเพื่อให้ได้บทแปลที่มีความสละสลวยทางภาษาและได้อรรถรสทัดเทียมกับต้นฉบับ ผู้วิจัยศึกษาทฤษฎีการแปลและแนวคิดต่าง ๆ อันได้แก่ แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับคำซ้ำภาษาไทย แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับคำซ้ำภาษาอังกฤษ ประเภทของความหมายของคำซ้ำภาษาไทย ประเภทของความหมายของคำซ้ำภาษาอังกฤษ แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับการแปลคำซ้ำ ทฤษฎีการแปลแบบยึดความหมาย ทฤษฎีสโคพอส และการวิเคราะห์วาทกรรม เพื่อช่วยในการวิเคราะห์ปัญหาที่พบในการแปล และค้นหาแนวการทางแก้ไขการแปลคำซำ หลังจากที่ได้ศึกษาทฤษฎีและแนวคิดข้างต้น ตลอดจนลงมือแปลบทที่เลือกมาศึกษาโดยยึดทฤษฎีการแปลแบบยึดความหมายเป็นสำคัญ ผู้วิจัยพบว่า แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับความหมายของคำซ้ำและแนวทางการแปลคำซ้ำของอาจารย์และผู้รู้หลาย ๆ ท่าน มีประโยชน์อย่างยิ่งในการพิจารณาคำซ้ำในแง่มุมทางโครงสร้างและการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางความหมายต่าง ๆ จนสามารถนำไปสู่การแปลคำซ้ำได้จริง

การประชุมในบริบทของประชาคมอาเซียนทวีจำนวนตามการพัฒนาและกรอบความร่วมมือที่เพิ่มขึ้นในภูมิภาคนี้ แต่อุปสรรคในการสื่อสารภาษาอังกฤษยังคงเป็นประเด็นสำคัญที่ลดประสิทธิภาพการประชุม งานวิจัยนี้ได้เก็บข้อมูลจากการสัมภาษณ์ผู้เกี่ยวข้องในการประชุมในบริบทอาเซียน พบว่าการกำหนดให้ใช้เฉพาะภาษาอังกฤษในที่ประชุม บ่อยครั้งกระทบต่อความเข้าใจเนื้อหาการประชุมและการมีส่วนร่วมของผู้เข้าร่วมจากแต่ละประเทศ โดยเฉพาะการประชุมในระดับปฏิบัติการมักได้รับผลกระทบมากที่สุดเพราะต้องเผชิญปัจจัยที่ทำให้การสื่อสารภาษาอังกฤษเป็นอุปสรรค เช่น ปัจจัยด้านงบประมาณจ้างล่ามที่มีจำกัด ความสามารถใช้ภาษาอังกฤษของผู้เข้าร่วมประชุมที่หลากหลาย เป็นต้น ผลการวิเคราะห์บทสัมภาษณ์ยังชี้ว่าการจัดจ้างล่ามเพื่อลดอุปสรรคด้านการสื่อสารในที่ประชุมที่เหมาะสมที่สุดสำหรับประชาคมอาเซียนคือใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษากลางในการล่ามสู่ภาษาอื่นๆ ถึงกระนั้นก็ยังติดประเด็นเรื่องนโยบายของประชาคมอาเซียนเองที่กำหนดให้ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาทางการภาษาเดียว ไม่สนับสนุนให้มีการจ้างล่าม ซึ่งแตกต่างโดยสิ้นเชิงจากสหภาพยุโรปที่สนับสนุนหลักพหุภาษานิยมหรือนโยบายภาษาทางการและภาษาปฏิบัติการที่หลากหลาย ปัญหาดังกล่าวทำให้ผู้เกี่ยวข้องในการประชุมในบริบทอาเซียนต้องหาทางออกให้การสื่อสารในที่ประชุมเกิดขึ้นได้ด้วยวิธีต่างๆ ตามอัตภาพ นอกจากนี้ยังมีความเป็นไปได้น้อยมากที่ประชาคมอาเซียนจะจัดตั้งหน่วยงานอำนวยการล่ามในที่ประชุมเหมือนที่สหภาพยุโรปมี

ความขัดแย้งในบทบาทและจรรยาบรรณของล่ามในคดีแพ่ง : กรณีคู่ความเป็นผู้ว่าจ้างล่าม, มัตถกา สุดทางธรรม

ล่ามคู่ความมีความสำคัญอย่างมากในฐานะผู้อำนวยความสะดวกในการสื่อสารในการดำเนินคดีหรือระงับข้อพิพาทตามกฎหมาย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในปัจจุบันซึ่งการประกอบธุรกิจสามารถทำได้อย่างไรพรมแดนระหว่างผู้ที่ใช้ภาษาแตกต่างกัน เมื่อล่ามคู่ความเป็นผู้ที่ได้รับการว่าจ้างโดยตรงโดยคู่ความฝ่ายหนึ่ง ล่ามคู่ความย่อมต้องคำนึงถึงผลของคดีที่ผู้ว่าจ้างคาดหวังและการรักษาผลประโยชน์ของผู้ว่าจ้างในขณะปฏิบัติหน้าที่ งานวิจัยนี้จึงเป็นการศึกษาบทบาทและการปฏิบัติหน้าที่ของล่ามคู่ความและความจำเป็นในการต้องปฏิบัติหน้าที่เกินขอบเขตเพื่อรักษาผลประโยชน์ของผู้ว่าจ้าง รวมถึงมุมมองของผู้ประกอบวิชาชีพกฎหมายต่อการปฏิบัติหน้าที่ของล่ามคู่ความ โดยการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพผ่านการสัมภาษณ์แบบกึ่งมีโครงสร้างซึ่งกลุ่มตัวอย่างทั้งหมด 13 ท่าน ซึ่งประกอบไปด้วยล่ามคู่ความและผู้ประกอบวิชาชีพกฎหมายและใช้การวิเคราะห์แก่นสาระ ซึ่งผลการวิจัยแสดงให้เห็นว่าการทำหน้าที่เป็นล่ามคู่ความโดยไม่ปฏิบัติตนเป็นผู้ไกล่เกลี่ยและไม่ปฏิบัติหน้าที่เกินขอบเขตนั้นเป็นสิ่งที่ต้องกระทำในทุกกรณีโดยไม่มีข้อยกเว้น ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับหลักการทั่วไปและจรรยาบรรณของล่ามที่จะต้องสื่อสารความหมายของต้นฉบับเป็นอีกภาษาหนึ่งโดยไม่มีการตัดทอนต่อเติม เปลี่ยนแปลง

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อศึกษาและหาแนวทางการแปลศัพท์ทางจิตเวชศาสตร์ในตำรา Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice, Fifth Edition ของ Glen O. Gabbard จากคำศัพท์ที่คัดสรรทั้งสิ้น 30 คำ โดยมีสมมติฐานของการวิจัยว่า แนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทของคริสติอาเน นอร์ด แนวทางการแปลแบบตีความและยึดความหมายของฌอง เดอลิล แนวทางการสร้างคำในภาษาอังกฤษของอิงโก แพลก แนวทางการแปลคำสร้างใหม่ของปีเตอร์ นิวมาร์ก และหลักเกณฑ์การบัญญัติศัพท์ของราชบัณฑิตยสถานของมงคล เดชนครินทร์ จะสามารถนำมาประยุกต์ใช้ในกระบวนการแปลคำศัพท์ทางจิตเวชศาสตร์ที่คัดสรร เพื่อให้สามารถถ่ายทอดความหมายของคำศัพท์ได้อย่างถูกต้อง มีลักษณะของความเป็นศัพท์เฉพาะทาง ผลการวิจัยแสดงให้เห็นว่า แนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบท แนวทางการแปลแบบตีความและยึดความหมาย แนวทางการสร้างคำในภาษาอังกฤษ แนวทางการแปลคำสร้างใหม่ และหลักเกณฑ์การบัญญัติศัพท์ สามารถนำมาใช้เพื่อแปลคำศัพท์ทางจิตเวชศาสตร์ได้ตามสมมติฐาน

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ศึกษาข้อบกพร่องที่พบในการแปลป้ายข้อมูลของพิพิธภัณฑ์และวิธีการแก้ไข โดยคัดสรรบทแปลจากป้ายข้อมูลนิทรรศการของศูนย์วิทยาศาสตร์เพื่อการศึกษา (ท้องฟ้าจำลองกรุงเทพ) เพื่อให้ได้บทแปลที่สามารถใช้งานได้ตามวัตถุประสงค์ มีอรรถสาระและเนื้อหาเหมาะสมกับผู้รับสารปลายทาง ผู้ศึกษาได้ดำเนินการวิจัยโดยค้นคว้าแนวคิดเกี่ยวกับการแปลตัวบทพิพิธภัณฑ์ (Guillot, 2014; Neather, 2005; Sturge, 2007) แนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทประเภทสารคดีของคริสติอาเน นอร์ด (2005) แนวคิดการจำแนกหมวดหมู่ของข้อบกพร่องในการแปลโดยคริสติอาเน นอร์ด (1997) กลวิธีการแก้ไขงานแปลที่เกี่ยวข้อง (วัลยา วิวัฒน์ศร, 2547; มกุฏ อรฤดี, 2560; Mossop, 2007) ทฤษฎีสโคพอส (Skopostheorie) นำเสนอโดยฮันส์ แฟร์เมียร์ (1996) แนวคิดเรื่อง Scene-and-Frames Semantics นำเสนอโดยชาร์ลส ฟิลล์มอร์ (1977) แนวทางการแปลแบบตีความและยึดความหมาย (Interpretive Approach) นำเสนอโดยฌอง เดอลิลส์ (1988) และความรู้ว่าด้วยไวยากรณ์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับข้อบกพร่องในการแปลที่พบ ผลการศึกษาพบว่าการนำทฤษฎีและแนวคิดต่างๆ ข้างต้นมาประยุกต์ใช้ร่วมกัน สามารถระบุข้อบกพร่องในบทแปลและแก้ไขข้อบกพร่องได้

Swiss German dialects contribute to the social identity of a speaker, especially on a local level (Christen, 1995). Many dialects of Switzerland are associated with a common stereotype which relates to the identity of the speakers (Rash, 2002). This research looks at these notions and investigates concepts of identity ascription and stereotyping that arise between and from the dialects of canton Aargau and canton Zürich, in Switzerland. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether assisted repeated reading is an effective way for adult second language (L2) learners of English to develop oral and silent reading fluency rates. Reading fluency is an underdeveloped construct in second language studies, both in research and practice. This study first lays out a framework of text difficulty levels and reading rate thresholds for intermediate and advanced L2 readers of English based upon a theoretical framework of automatization of the linguistic elements of reading through structured practice and skill development. Abstract

Three different English translations exist for Jules Verne's Le Château des Carpathes (1892). The first, by an anonymous translator, was published in London by Sampson Low in 1893 and carried the title The Castle of the Carpathians. An abridged and altered version of this same translation later reappeared in 1963 in the “Fitzroy Edition” published in London by Arco; it was retitled Carpathian Castle and was edited by I.O. Evans. In 2010 a new English translation of this novel was published in Brooklyn, New York by Melville House; it featured a significantly revised title, The Castle in Transylvania …

Mayan Language Revitalization, Hip Hop, And Ethnic Identity In Guatemala, Rusty Barrett

This paper analyzes the language ideologies and linguistic practices of Mayan-language hip hop in Guatemala, focusing on the work of the group B'alam Ajpu. The members of B'alam Ajpu use a mix of Spanish and Mayan languages in their music and run a school that combines lessons in hip hop (rapping, break-dancing, etc.) with efforts to promote the use of Mayan languages among children. The language ideologies associated with B'alam Ajpu intersect and challenge the ideologies associated with both language revitalization and with hip hop. The linguistic practices of B'alam Ajpu also challenge hegemonic assumptions regarding ethnic identity in Guatemala.

Research on writing in a second or foreign language has been growing rapidly, with around 2600 articles published in the past 15 years, an average of 170 per year (Silva, McMartin- Miller, Jayne, & Pelaez-Morales, 2011). While Lebanese scholars authored only about two percent of those publications, L2 writing research in Lebanon goes back to the 1960s, primarily in the form of MA theses. Since then, only one synthesis article had been published (cf. Bacha, 2007), but it remained narrow in its coverage. Composed around 1250 by an unknown author in the region of Orléans, the Vulgate Commentary on Ovid's Metamorphoses is the most widely disseminated and reproduced medieval work on Ovid's epic compendium of classical mythology and materialist philosophy. This commentary both preserves the rich store of twelfth-century glossing on the Metamorphoses and incorporates new material of literary interest, while the marginal glosses in many respects reflect the scholar interests of an early thirteenth-century schoolmaster. A Computational Translation Of The Phaistos Disk, Peter Revesz

For over a century the text of the Phaistos Disk remained an enigma without a convincing translation. This paper presents a novel semi-automatic translation method that uses for the first time a recently discovered connection between the Phaistos Disk symbols and other ancient scripts, including the Old Hungarian alphabet. The connection between the Phaistos Disk script and the Old Hungarian alphabet suggested the possibility that the Phaistos Disk language may be related to Proto-Finno-Ugric, Proto-Ugric, or Proto-Hungarian. Using words and suffixes from those languages, it is possible to translate the Phaistos Disk text as an ancient sun hymn, possibly connected …

Crete was the birthplace of several ancient writings, including the Cretan Hieroglyphs, the Linear A and the Linear B scripts. Out of these three only Linear B is deciphered. The sound values of the Cretan Hieroglyph and the Linear A symbols are unknown and attempts to reconstruct them based on Linear B have not been fruitful. In this paper, we compare the ancient Cretan scripts with four other Mediterranean and Black Sea scripts, namely Phoenician, South Arabic, Greek and Old Hungarian.
