"Shiwilu, also known as Jebero (ISO jeb), is a critically endangered Kawapanan language spoken in the District of Jeberos, in northeastern Peru. Kawapanan languages exhibit a “mixed” areal profile, in that they combine structural properties typical of Western Amazonian languages with features specifically associated to the Central Andean families Quechuan and Aymaran (Valenzuela 2015). On June 23, 2016, Shiwilu became the first Peruvian language to be declared National Cultural Heritage (Resolución Viceministerial N° 073-2016-VMPCIC-MC). This project consists of English translations of two German early Romantic stories, “Marie” (1798) by Sophie Mereau and “Seltner Ausweg” (1823) by Luise Brachmann, as well as an introductory discussion of the authors, their significance in the Jena Circle of Romantic writers, and the translation process. The introduction incorporates research on both Mereau and Brachmann and German early Romanticism, as well as some research on translation theory. Overall, the project aims to make “Marie” and “Seltner Ausweg,” which have not previously been translated, available to an English-speaking audience and to highlight the work of two little known Romantic women writers. …

A small group of interpreters was interviewed with regard to their view of learning ASL and becoming bicultural. A model of identity was then postulated based on Hegel’s dialectic (Wheat 2012) of thesis (presuppositions, stereotypes, or theories about ASL and the Deaf community), antithesis (conflicting experiences), and synthesis (new understanding and acceptance). Also utilized were various identity constructs from the literature on bilingualism/ biculturalism, which suggests that identity is ascribed or constructed in relation to others and constantly negotiated (Tropp et al. 1999). In the course of his life Tolkien explored his thoughts and feelings on the role of language-invention in fiction in two key manifestos – his November 1931 talk 'A Secret Vice' and his 1954 O'Donnell lecture 'English and Welsh'. With the rise of technology it becomes important to measure and analyze the communication patterns that are emerging from these changes. Technologies open up different communication patterns for individuals to use (Tomas & Carlson 2015; Walther, 1996; Wei & Leung, 1999). Thus, this study develops the “ASOHIO” perspective, which incorporates a range of new and old communication patterns, online communication, offline communication, synchronous communication, asynchronous communication, interpersonal communication, and hyperpersonal communication. The primary objective of this research project is to show varying degrees of textual and semantic contributions that semantic density and grammatical metaphors make in the way that TOEFL iBT reading sections and Japanese EFL textbooks are used. This research is conducted from two theoretical perspectives within the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The first analysis is to investigate logical and semantic relationships within clause complexes in order to identify structural variations and their textual distributions. This paper presents a quantitative fine-grained manual evaluation approach to comparing the performance of different machine translation (MT) systems. We build upon the well-established Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM) error taxonomy and implement a novel method that assesses whether the differences in performance for MQM error types between different MT systems are statistically significant. We conduct a case study for English-to- Croatian, a language direction that involves translating into a morphologically rich language, for which we compare three MT systems belonging to different paradigms: pure phrase-based, factored phrase-based and neural. This thesis examines the work included in Usman Oladeinde’s MFA thesis exhibition. The goal of this thesis paper is to explore major themes such as communication, identity, change, centeredness, landscapes, and language. These paintings present Arabic letter forms transformed into illegible shapes which are painted on landscape backgrounds, often depicting an aesthetic of textual elements receding into space. All these works are inspired by the Qibla, which is represented in the abstract and painted using acrylic media. Occasionally image transfers are mounted on the painted surface.

การศึกษาเรื่อง ชาตินิยมกับความเป็นอื่นที่พบในการแปลบทละครเรื่อง ‘The Merchant of Venice’ ของ William Shakespeare กรณีศึกษา: บทพระราชนิพนธ์แปลในพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเรื่อง ‘เวนิสวาณิช’ นี้เป็นการศึกษาเชิงคุณภาพตามแนวทางวัฒนธรรมศึกษาในศาสตร์การแปล โดยมุ่งศึกษาบทบาทของการแปลในการประกอบสร้างอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นอื่นและความเป็นไทยในฐานะส่วนหนึ่งของแนวคิดชาตินิยมที่ปรากฏในบทแปล เพื่อหาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบทบาทของการแปลกับบริบททางประวัติศาสตร์ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวในประเด็นดังกล่าว ในการศึกษา ผู้วิจัยได้ทบทวนทฤษฎีและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง โดยเฉพาะในกรอบของศาสตร์การแปล ได้แก่ แนวคิดเรื่องอุดมการณ์ วาทกรรม และทฤษฎีวาทกรรมวิเคราะห์เชิงวิพากษ์ ตลอดจนแนวคิดเรื่องความเป็นอื่นและความเป็นไทย แล้วจึงได้ศึกษาแง่มุมที่เกี่ยวข้องที่ปรากฏในตัวบทต้นฉบับและบริบททางประวัติศาสตร์ของฉบับแปล ก่อนจะทำการวิเคราะห์บทแปลที่มีการสอดแทรกวาทกรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเรื่องความเป็นอื่นจากตัวบทต้นฉบับ The Merchant of Venice ของวิลเลียม เชกสเปียร์ ในบทพระราชนิพนธ์แปล เวนิสวาณิช ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวด้วยแนวทางวาทกรรมวิเคราะห์เชิงวิพากษ์ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ใน เวนิสวาณิช ปรากฏการปรับบทแปลที่มีส่วนในการกำหนดสร้างและขับเน้นอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นอื่นของตัวละครในเรื่อง และสอดแทรกอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นไทยอันพึงประสงค์ในสายตาของฝ่ายอำนาจนำ ได้แก่การเชิดชูสถาบันกษัตริย์ระบอบสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์ในฐานะสัญลักษณ์ของชาติ การปรับบทแปลเช่นนี้เป็นผลจากความกังวลที่มีต่อสถานะความเป็นชาติของสยามท่ามกลางกระแสการไหลบ่าของอิทธิพลจากต่างชาติ ทั้งจากชาติตะวันตกที่เข้ามาล่าอาณานิคมในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ และจากชาวจีนโพ้นทะเลที่เข้ามาอาศัยอยู่ในสยาม และเผยให้เห็นบทบาทของการแปลในการเป็นเครื่องมือขับเคลื่อนอุดมการณ์ โดยสอดคล้องกับบริบททางสังคมและการเมืองในสมัยดังกล่าว
