Bladder Distension As A Cause Of Abdominal Compartment Syndrome, Muhammad Yasir, Muhammad Qamarul Hoda, Tauseef Ahmed
Department of Anaesthesia
Abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) is increasingly identified in critically ill patient and its harmful effects are well documented. The disparity among the pressure, volume in abdominal cavity and its contents, results in ACS. The actual incidence of ACS is not known. However, it has been observed predominantly in patients with severe blunt and penetrating abdominal trauma, ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms, retro- and intra-peritoneal hemorrhage, pneumoperitoneum, neoplasm, pancreatitis, ascites and multiple bone fracture. We present a case of 40-year female who underwent emergency cesarean section and developed abdominal compartment syndrome due to urinary bladder distension secondary to blockade of urinary catheter …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most commonly diagnosed male cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death for men in the United States. Understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in progression from the asymptomatic androgen-dependent PCa to the lethal castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is a major challenge. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), are known to be dysregulated in PCa. MicroRNA-1207-3p (miR-1207-3p) is encoded by the non-protein coding gene locus PVT1 on the 8q24 human chromosomal region, an established PCa susceptibility locus. However, the role of miR-1207-3p in PCa is unclear. We have discovered that miR-1207-3p is significantly underexpressed in PCa cell lines …
A Practicality Analysis Pertaining To Minimally Invasive Robot-Assisted Urologic Surgery, 2018 University of Central Florida
A Practicality Analysis Pertaining To Minimally Invasive Robot-Assisted Urologic Surgery, Chase Cavayero
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Minimally invasive robot-assisted surgery is a technological development that has changed the field of medicine in the past decade. The introduction of the da Vinci® by Intuitive Surgical Inc. has opened up many interesting options in several different fields. Specifically, the field of urology has seen increased utilization of the robotic technique due to the precision allowed by the technology. Although many perioperative and postoperative benefits have been documented within the literature pertaining to robotic surgery, some surgeons contend that the extra cost associated with the procedures is not practical. To this point the extra cost has not been prohibitive, …

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is palliative and prostate cancer (CaP) recurs as lethal castration-recurrent/resistant CaP (CRPC). One mechanism that provides CaP resistance to ADT is primary backdoor androgen metabolism, which uses up to four 3α-oxidoreductases to convert 5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol (DIOL) to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The goal was to determine whether inhibition of 3α-oxidoreductase activity decreased conversion of DIOL to DHT. Protein sequence analysis showed that the four 3α-oxidoreductases have identical catalytic amino acid residues. Mass spectrometry data showed combined treatment using catalytically inactive 3α-oxidoreductase mutants and the 5α-reductase inhibitor, dutasteride, decreased DHT levels in CaP cells better than dutasteride alone. Combined blockade …

© 2018 S. Karger AG, Basel. Objective: To expand the diagnostic armamentarium for medullary sponge kidney (MSK), we evaluate the use of high-resolution multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) for MSK diagnosis and compare to the standard intravenous urography (IVU). Despite a significant prevalence amongst stone formers, diagnosis of this well described condition has declined. IVU, the gold standard in MSK diagnosis, has largely been replaced by CT, which has previously been shown unable to demonstrate signs of MSK. Methods and Materials: Patients with known history of MSK based on IVU underwent limited MDCT urogram. Control group patients, without MSK, also had …

Black men are more likely to die as a result of prostate cancer than white men, despite effective treatments that improve survival for clinically significant prostate cancer. We undertook this study to identify gaps in prostate cancer care quality, racial disparities in care, and underlying reasons for poorer quality care. Methods We identified all black men and random age-matched white men with Gleason scores $ 7 diagnosed between 2006 and 2013 at two urban hospitals to determine rates of treatment underuse. Underuse was defined as not receiving primary surgery, …

© 2018 The Royal Society of Chemistry. An isothiourea-catalysed Michael addition-annulation process using β-fluoroalkyl-substituted α,β-unsaturated aryl esters and a range of 2-acylbenzazoles is reported for the enantioselective synthesis of dihydropyranone and dihydropyridinone products bearing polyfluorinated stereocenters (29 examples, up to 98% yield, >99:1 er). The choice of aryl group of the aryl ester proved essential in determining reaction enantioselectivity and dihydropyranone:dihydropyridinone product selectivity. The aryloxide leaving group is shown to play a number of essential additional roles, operating (i) as a Brønsted base, circumventing the need for an auxiliary base; and (ii) as a Lewis base to catalyse the isomerisation …
Testosterone And The Adult Male, 2018 University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Testosterone And The Adult Male, Alex Straftis

Abstract
In the last 15 years, prescription testosterone sales have increased almost threefold. Testosterone is a powerful hormone, which has both physiological and behavioral effects on the adult male. These effects vary over a man’s life course and social ecology. In a natural setting, testosterone reaches a peak during early adulthood, declines gradually over midlife, and has exponential drops after the age of 70. Increasing testosterone, through testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), past early adulthood, is an evolutionary novel circumstance for an adult male. To gauge these effects, and the motivations that initiated them, this study conducted a preliminary text analysis …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Wilms' tumor manifesting as an obstructing ureteral mass is extremely rare. Herein, we report an unusual case in which a child presented with a clinical picture concerning for and suggestive of ureteropelvic junction ob- struction (UPJO), but was instead found to have an intrapelvic pedunculated Wilms' tumor with extension into the proximal ureter. We discuss the patient's diagnostic workup, radiographic, operative and pathologic findings, as well as important lessons learned from this unusual case.

Loma Linda University Student Journal
Donor nephrectomies can be technically demanding. Donors also may not be fully psychologically prepared for their post-operative pain or cosmetic outcome. A novel Percutaneous Externally Assembled Laparoscopic (PEAL) paradigm was developed to decrease incisional pain and laparoscopic scars. The aim of this study is to compare the post-operative outcomes between donor nephrectomies performed with and without the PEAL instruments.
