Perceptions Of Surgeons On Surgical Antibiotic Prophylaxis Use At An Urban Tertiary Hospital In Tanzania, Elizabeth Mmari, Eunice Pallangyo, Authar Ali, Dereck A. Kaale, Isaac Mawalla, Muzdalfat Abeid

General Surgery, East Africa

Background: Surgical Site Infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among operated patients. In spite of the accessibility of universal and national guidelines for surgical prophylaxis, recent studies surveying the present routine of prophylaxis have demonstrated overutilization of a wide range antibacterial medication for a single patient. Few studies have shown qualitatively factors influencing this and perceptions of surgeons on surgical antibiotic prophylaxis use. Unfortunately, none of these studies have been done in Tanzania.

Objective: To describe the perceptions of surgeons on surgical antibiotic prophylaxis use at an urban tertiary hospital.

Solitary Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis Of Skull: Case Report With One-Year Follow-Up, Muhammad Junaid, Syed Sarmad Bukhari, Ali Afzal

Section of Neurosurgery

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disorder characterised by increased production of Langerhans-type histiocytes. It is more common in the pediatric age group with a predilection for osseous involvement, though any organ may be involved. A 10-year male child was brought to the neurosurgical clinic with a slow growing painful tender mass on the head. Initial attempt to biopsy the lesion failed due to excessive bleeding. It was later imaged and removed with a frontal craniotomy. Histopathological evaluation along with immunohistochemistry revealed the true nature of the lesion. Follow-up revealed complete excision of the lesion and no recurrence at …

On the other hand, Primary thyroid lymphoma (PTL) is a rare entity accounting for only about 1% to 5% of all thyroid malignancies and only 2% of extranodal lymphomas. Synchronous PTC and PTL is a very rare condition and only a few cases have been reported in the literature up till now. We report one such case in a 52-year-old lady who was …

Institutional Factors In General Surgery Resident Wellness And Burnout: Identification Via A Modified Delphi Technique, Darci C. Foote, Gurjit Sandhu, Kathryn Ziegler, James Lau

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Background: While there has been significant focus on individual and programmatic factors impacting general surgical residents wellbeing and burnout, the effect of the greater institutional macrocosm has not been well studied. Our work seeks to identify organizational factors that may be implicated in resident wellness. Summary of Work: Using a modified Delphi technique, a survey structured around six domains of the Maslach Burnout Theory (workload, control, reward, community, fairness, values) was distributed to wellness stakeholders at two institutions. Participants identified factors that may be implicated in resident wellness and burnout. Two subsequent multiple-choice survey iterations were distributed to stakeholders who …

Abdominal Vascular Injuries- What General/ Trauma Surgeons Should Know?, Zia Ur Rehman 2021 Aga Khan University

Abdominal Vascular Injuries- What General/ Trauma Surgeons Should Know?, Zia Ur Rehman

Department of Surgery

Abdominal vascular injuries are the common cause of death post-trauma. These are challenging injuries to manage due to severe haemodynamic instability, other associated injuries and difficulty in accessing and controlling these deep-seated vessels. Early control of bleeding can decrease mortality in these patients. Abdominal vasculature is divided into three zones, each requiring different operative strategy for exposure. Standard vascular surgery principles of achieving proximal and distal control before exploring any haematoma are followed when managing these injuries. Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of aorta is a minimally invasive method of achieving proximal aortic occlusion. This also acts as bridge for definitive …
