Join Dean Leslie and Professor Michael Herz to discuss presidential executive orders. On Inauguration Day, President Trump revoked 78 existing executive orders in one fell swoop and started signing new ones at a frenetic pace. There has never been quite such an attention-getting spree of these directives. Executive orders are not new; every President since George Washington has issued them. But they are often misunderstood. Professor Herz will discuss the history, nature, and effect of executive orders. The two will also answer questions raised by student attendees.

New York City is currently in an affordable housing crisis.  This crisis consists of two parts—availability and affordability. On the availability side, the rental vacancy rate plummeted from 4.54 percent in 2021 to a mere 1.41 percent in 2023, a multi-decade low.  Additionally, only 400,000 housing units have been built over the past decade, despite the creation of nearly 1.2 million jobs.  Meanwhile, on the affordability side, over half of New York City households are rent-burdened, defined as spending more than thirty percent of income on rent.  Furthermore, rent prices in 2024 are seven times greater than actual salaries.

Articles

At the 2023 Association of American Law Schools Tax Section meeting, professors discussed their impressions of a decline in the number of JD students studying tax. Their impressions were consistent with declines that have been documented in similar fields. Between 2011 and 2021, U.S. accounting programs saw an 18% drop in students, while new CPA candidates declined 39% from 2010 to 2022. In the United Kingdom, the number of law schools that teach tax has diminished by 43% since 2002. Historically, educational spaces have been sites of racialized inequality for Black youth, creating disparate educational outcomes. The disproportionate divide between young Black and White men continues throughout the life of their academic journey, and this research seeks to examine its impact on dropping out of school. The experience of Black young men being “othered” – compared to their White counterparts – coupled with the myriad ways Black youth must navigate normalcy creates additional challenges they must carry. This dissertation employs critical race theory and ecological systems theory as theoretical frameworks. It utilizes hierarchical regression modeling of the High School Longitudinal …

In this essay, author Michael S. Green discusses private international law and its importance in a law school's curriculum. After a brief summary of the history of private international law, the essay traces the disappearance of private international law courses in American law schools and proposes reasons as to why this trend may be occurring. The essay closes with reasons why it is a mistake to remove private international law from course offerings and requests that law schools reintroduce the topic.
