Free Taxpayer Assistance Offered At Maurer School Of Law Through March, James Owsley Boyd

Keep Up With the Latest News from the Law School (blog)

Qualifying local taxpayers will have a helping hand navigating federal and state tax returns this spring, as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will once again offer services at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law.

Both U.S. and certain international taxpayers are eligible to utilize the services, which will run on Monday and Tuesdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. beginning January 27 and running through March 25. Services will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in Room 121 on the first floor of the Law School (211 South Indiana Avenue).

Nearly a century has passed since Henry Munroe Campbell’s law partners met with the dean of the University of Michigan Law School to establish a memorial for their friend and colleague. As a result, the Law School’s nascent “case club competition” was named in Mr. Campbell’s honor, a fitting way to combine his love for Michigan Law, oral advocacy, and the training of young lawyers.

Effectiveness Of Research Plans: A Case Study, Thomas "Tj" Striepe, Savanna L. Nolan

This article presents a case study examining whether the creation and use of research plans enhance the effectiveness of legal research by law students. Despite their emphasized role in legal research pedagogy, research plans are often underutilized by students in their summer jobs, clinical work, and post-graduate employment. Through a three-part study, the authors surveyed upper-level students about their use and impressions of research plans, analyzed performance outcomes from a research simulation involving a legal hypothetical, and evaluated five years of assessment data from a 1L Legal Research course. This paper reports on a survey of 31 law professors teaching consumer protection law conducted in connection with the Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice at the UC Berkeley School of Law and the Center for Consumer Law at the University of Houston Law Center’s 2024 Teaching Consumer Law Conference. Surveys posed at previous editions of the Teaching Consumer Law Conference focused largely on what topics are covered in consumer law courses. For the shareholder franchise to have meaning, shareholders must have access to relevant information to inform their voting decisions. The securities laws’ disclosure requirements play an essential role in informing the shareholder vote.

This Essay focuses on the question of the materiality of information in the context of shareholder voting. It addresses the question of whether ESG-related information is material, positioning the materiality inquiry within the context of shareholders’ voting decisions. It explores the definition of materiality with a focus on the “reasonable investor” concept embedded within the definition. Our understanding of the American economy often relies on stylized facts derived from mandatory disclosures by listed corporations. Data vendors like Standard & Poor’s vacuum up 10Ks and proxy statements into databases, and scholars distill these into tentative maps. This may have been adequate for a postwar economy centered on asset-heavy manufacturers, but it is increasingly out of step with an information-based economy. Companies listed on the stock market are fewer in number and less representative than they were, light in tangible assets and people, and heavy on IP. In this article, I provide context for my forthcoming research project on shareholder proposals and racial equity audits. Since the murder of George Floyd in May of 2020, progressive shareholder actors have increasingly used the proposal mechanism to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice-related goals. These proposals have frequently gone beyond requesting the usual corporate fare of diversity trainings, intersectionality workshops, affinity groups, etc. Instead, a more ambitious type of proposal asks corporate America to conduct racial equity audits, defined as “an independent, objective and holistic analysis of a company’s policies, practices, products, services and efforts to combat systemic racism …

The book was created by a team of faculty members at the University of Iowa College of Law to supplement the study of Civil Procedure, Evidence, Constitutional Law, and other law school courses.
