The Indiana University Maurer School of Law will add four members to its prestigious Academy of Law Alumni Fellows this April. Terry Dworkin ’75, Fred Logan ’77, Holiday “Holly” McKiernan ’83, and Luis Felipe Sanchez ’76 will receive the highest honor the Law School can bestow on its alumni when they are inducted April 14 in a ceremony inside the Indiana Memorial Union.

The States, self-defined as the civilised, clothed in the ‘refined’ urbane bourgeois created a modern cosmopolitan order at a civilizational scale. The remaining world was driven into a cultural subjection and classified by the ‘civilised’ into these fixated identities while their indigeneity and socio-cultural identity were marginalised. Projected itself as the cradle of intellect, Europe consciously crafted imperialism as a cultural reference for the rest of the world. The colonial encounters left imperial imprints on the peoples of these colonies, the consequences of which remain evident in the styles and pedagogies of teaching international law in the geographical South. This article considers how private international law in Asia and Hong Kong is developing and should be developed, through both theoretical and practical aspects as evidenced in both research and teaching. Let me begin with a brief introduction to my home institution: Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, Germany. The school is named after Dr. Gerd Bucerius, a famous German publisher, politician and lawyer by training. Bucerius Law School, founded in 2000, is a private institution, which is atypical in Germany, where most of higher education institutions are publicly funded. In addition, Bucerius is rather small. With tax season now in full-swing through April 18, a dedicated group of volunteers is making the filing process easier—and cheaper—for many local community members. Local taxpayers with an annual income under $57,000 are eligible for free tax preparation help from students at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning January 30.
