Great instructors are at the heart of any great school, and the Indiana University Maurer School of Law was proud to recognize five of its best at the school’s annual Teaching Awards March 24.

This year’s recipients include BestLawyers’ 2022 Indianapolis Corporate Governance Law Lawyer of the Year, a beloved clinical professor and director, one of the world’s foremost authorities on the intersection of law and globalization, a top U.S. tax scholar, and a professor known for flipping homemade pancakes to students.

American Democracy In Peril, J. Michael Luttig

Sibley Lecture Series

"American Democracy in Peril" was presented by Judge J. Michael Luttig as the 121st Sibley Lecture. Luttig served as a federal judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit from 1991 to 2006. He also has worked with Boeing and Coca-Cola in the private sector.

This event was for members of the law school community only. It took place in the Hatton Lovejoy Courtroom at the University of Georgia School of Law March 22, 2023 at 3:30 pm. A reception followed in the Davenport Rotunda.

98th Henry M. Campbell Moot Court Competition: Final Round, University Of Michigan Law School

Event Materials

Henry Munroe Campbell was a distinguished lawyer who served as legal counsel to the University of Michigan's Board fo Regents for several years.

Following Mr. Campbell's death in 1926, his law partners met with then University of Michigan Law School Dean Henry M. Bates to discuss a fitting memorial. They decided to establish a case club competition to foster training for law students in appellate advocacy in his honor. The first Henry M. Campbell competition was held in the 1927-28 academic year.

A trust fund to finance the competition was established in 1927 and has been periodically augmented with gifts …

When a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, spilling hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals into the soil, water, and air, Zoe Kolender knew the cleanup efforts would be an arduous task. But she also knew something most people don’t—that environmental disasters like the Norfolk Southern derailment are treated differently depending on the areas in which they occur.

This Article offers an early analysis of ABA Standard 303(c) following its recent adoption in 2022. ABA Standard 303(c) requires that law schools “shall provide education law students on bias, cross-cultural competency, and racism.” The Author suggests that 303(c) formalizes what many clinical educators have already been teaching: inclusion, justice, and belonging. Following the 2020 shootings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, many law schools have revisited their diversity, equity, and inclusion programming and implemented various new initiatives and training. A Body Without A Soul: Why Print Still Matters In Legal Research, Mari Cheney, Heather Simmons

This article argues that print still has a place in legal research pedagogy and that some materials should still be collected in print in addition to online should the budget allow for it due to five primary reasons: (1) stability of legal information; (2) context; (3) information literacy; (4) algorithm bias; and (5) the discovery of information. Since many law library budgets are shrinking, there are creative ways for online legal publishers to make online material more print-like should libraries be unable to purchase both print and online material.

Cultivating Versatility: The Multiple Foundations Of The Law School’S Public Mission, David Sandomierski

Law schools should aspire to cultivate versatility. To accomplish this goal, the salient features of the law school should reflect three foundational intellectual pillars: a commitment to the rule of law and legal rationality, an emphasis on multiple legal process, and an appreciation for legal pluralism. Complementing these symbolically “vertical” pillars on which the law school’s activity rests are three transversal virtues that operate “horizontally” to brace the foundations. These include a commitment to critique, context, and diversity. Technology has become central to law practice. Attorneys have an ethical obligation to understand how that technology works, how it can facilitate client representation—and the risks it poses to the confidentiality of clients’ electronically-stored data. Law school clinics seem to fall behind the curve on this obligation. Some maintain outdated protocols, and some have no protocols at all, to manage and safeguard client data. This leaves client data less secure than it ought to be, risking harm to clients, ethical violations for attorneys, and missed opportunities to communicate the importance of ethical technology use to clinic students.

A “Fourth Industrial Revolution” (4IR) will dramatically change current law students’ careers. Innovations in technology, business, and social structures will require different and more sophisticated legal services. Law school graduates will be responsible for harnessing, encouraging, and establishing legal controls that offer society the benefits of these new technologies while limiting the undesirable side effects. At the same time, the recurring, repetitive practice of law will begin to disappear as more work is done much cheaper and better by machines.
