On May 30, 1901 The Hindu published its first lengthy editorial on Count Leo Tolstoy. It was followed by a personal letter to Tolstoy on June 13, 1901 from A. Ramaseshan, publicist and editor of the journal The Arya out of Madras. This seminal letter set the stage for a steady correspondence between Tolstoy and many Indians from different walks of life, the most prominent among them being M. K. Gandhi (1869-1948), who, as a political and ideological leader of India during the Indian Independence Movement, wrote to the Russian writer between 1909-1910.

Born in Seville, he is considered one of the most outstanding poets in 20th-century Spain and the linchpin poet of Spain's Generation of 1898. After spending time in Paris, he worked as a French teacher in Soria, and later lived in Segovia and Madrid. To escape Francoist troops at the end of the Spanish Civil War, Machado went into exile in Collioure, France, dying there soon after. In this paper, I argue that the fundamental Haitian values of the struggle for freedom and the prevailing desire for independence are portrayed through the morals and personality of two child characters found in texts set in Saint-Domingue/Haiti. The first character is a young girl named Adrienne in Alphonse de Lamartine’s play Toussaint Louverture (1850) and the second is a young boy named Alexis in Marie-Célie Agnant’s novel Alexis d’Haiti (1999). Through these two characters, Lamartine and Agnant depict Haiti’s struggle to achieve freedom and to retain its unique cultural identity that has allowed this nation once called the “pearl …

Ecocriticism emphasizes how our bodily and ecological boundaries are just as porous, inter-penetrable, and open as are our cultural and linguistic realms. As individual bodies and communities, we are fully immersed in our material environment and participating in constant exchanges of matter and energy. In this essay, I nevertheless advocate for a cautious approach to the ecocritical question of contested boundaries. After all, some boundaries and membranes are necessary to maintain living organisms. Regarding Timothy Morton’s assertion that we are “radically open,” I note the need for stable and healthy membranes to sustain life, such as our porous yet enclosed …

Ecocriticism’s contributions to the current rejection of dualistic thinking are noteworthy, particularly when this interdisciplinary field concentrates on hybridity and “relations” that preexist essences. In this mode, ecocriticism participates in a broader development of “affnity studies” that encompass the many efforts across the disciplines toward reconfiguring our “intraactions” with the world in terms that avoid dichotomies and Newtonian linearity and that utilize instead nonlinear, nondualistic forms of “hybridity.” Hybrids, in Steve Hinchliffe’s words, are “more or less durable bodies made up of similarly hybrid and impermanent relations.

Arguably the most celebrated woman poet of Spain's Generation of 1927, Champourcin went into exile in Mexico at the conclusion of the civil war (1936-1939) with her husband, poet Juan Jose Domenchina. She lived there until her 1972 return to Spain. Champourcin's poetry evolves from the emphasis on emotions and formal experimentation to mysticism and the remembrance of her past. Her first book, En silencio (1926; In Silence), contains poems clearly influenced by romanticism and modernism.
