With the skyrocketing interest in American Sign Language (ASL) courses and the increase in programs in two- and four-year institutions offering ASL, it is important to understand ASL as an autonomous language independent of English. Legal electoral terminology is a specialist subject within the broader legal language discourse. When translating into Arabic, even basic electoral terms can be translated differently in different Arab countries for various reasons due to different sources of inspiration. Most legal electoral terms have a variety of alternative equivalents within the relevant linguistic field or semi-legal domain. This paper discusses such alternatives while presenting problems related to the existing resources in the field. African Romances, Op. 17, composed in 1897 by African-British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912), is a collection of seven songs for high voice that is uniquely both African and American. The lyrics of this song cycle were first published in the book Majors and Minors, a collection of poems published in 1895 by Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906).

This research aims to assess Google Translate´s effectiveness in English-Thai consecutive interpreting based on users' comprehension and to investigate users’ satisfaction with MI renditions. Ten native speakers of Thai and eight native speakers of English were asked to listen to the translated speeches and complete a questionnaire to assess the Adequacy and Fluency of the MI. The findings showed that in terms of Adequacy of the English to Thai MI participants’ comprehension scores ranged from 2.4 to 3.45 out of 5, while Fluency received less than half of the maximum scores in all areas. The US Hispanic population is large and rapidly growing, with serious healthcare disparities. Alarmingly, 67% of Hispanic adults with a mental illness go untreated. Attempts to increase treatment rates have had limited success, likely partly due to stigma beliefs. There is an urgent need to develop and utilize a Spanish language stigma assessment tool. The current study is the first to do so, translating the Beliefs Toward Mental Illness (BTMI; Hirai et al., 2018) scale into Spanish (S-BTMI). Our psychometric findings with English-Spanish bilingual Latinx undergraduate students suggest that the S-BTMI can be a reliable measure of mental illness stigma. …

In most interpretations, Helen of Troy’s beauty makes her a vain, promiscuous, and dangerous woman. This is the Helen that patriarchal societies have written into existence and passed on to later generations, but it is not the Helen that appears in the Iliad. This thesis argues that Helen’s voice makes her a perceptive and powerful strategist. With the development of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and machine translation (MT) technology in recent years, their uses in simultaneous interpretation (SI) have been a subject of interest. This research, conducted to study these technologies in aiding the SI process, has four participants interpreted (English to Thai) three comparable speeches with automatic subtitling, with MT, and without subtitling. An audience then rated the interpretation renditions and answered a comprehension questionnaire. Tapping on a smartphone has expanded beyond texting, from interpersonal interaction to taking notes in an academic context. More specifically, consecutive interpreters, both novice and experienced, who are accustomed to smartphone tapping on a daily basis may be able to take notes on their smartphones. The study investigates the modern method of tapping on a smartphone as a note-taking alternative to the classic method of pen and paper. สารนิพนธ์เล่มนี้มุ่งศึกษาแนวทางการแปลข่าวออนไลน์เกี่ยวกับการเลือกตั้งประธานาธิบดีสหรัฐอเมริกา ครั้งที่ 59 จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทยของฝ่ายข่าวต่างประเทศ สำนักข่าวไทย ผู้วิจัยได้ประยุกต์ใช้กระบวนการแบบจำลองผู้เฝ้าประตูในการแก้ปัญหาการแปลข่าวตามแนวทางของ Erkka Vuorinen (1995) ที่ระบุว่า ผู้แปลใช้กระบวนการแบบจำลองผู้เฝ้าประตูทั้งสี่กระบวนการ ได้แก่ การเพิ่มข้อมูล การตัดข้อมูล การจัดเรียงข้อมูลใหม่ และการแทนที่ข้อมูลในการจัดการข้อมูลข่าว นอกจากนี้ ผู้วิจัยได้เลือกใช้แนวทางการวางกรอบเรื่องเล่าในการแปลของ Baker (2006) เพื่อวิเคราะห์บทบาทของผู้เรียบเรียงข่าวต่อการกำหนดกรอบความคิดของผู้รับสารอีกด้วย ผู้วิจัยคัดเลือกตัวอย่างข่าวเลือกตั้งประธานาธิบดีสหรัฐอเมริกา ครั้งที่ 59 ซึ่งสำนักข่าวต่างประเทศเขียนเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ จำนวน 50 ข่าว และข่าวแปลเป็นภาษาไทยโดยฝ่ายข่าวต่างประเทศ สำนักข่าวไทย 50 ข่าว ตั้งแต่เดือนสิงหาคม 2563 - มกราคม 2564 เพื่อนำมาใช้วิเคราะห์ด้วยกระบวนการแบบจำลองผู้เฝ้าประตูและแนวทางวางกรอบเรื่องเล่าในการแปล นอกจากนี้ ผู้วิจัยยังได้สัมภาษณ์บรรณาธิการและผู้เรียบเรียงข่าวของฝ่ายข่าวต่างประเทศ สำนักข่าวไทย จำนวน 2 คน เพื่อพิสูจน์สมมติฐานว่า ผู้เรียบเรียงข่าวของฝ่ายข่าวต่างประเทศ สำนักข่าวไทย ได้นำกระบวนการแบบจำลองผู้เฝ้าประตูทั้งสี่กระบวนการมาประยุกต์ใช้ในการแปลข่าวเลือกตั้งประธานาธิบดีสหรัฐอเมริกา และผู้เรียบเรียงข่าวมีบทบาทต่อการกำหนดกรอบความคิดของผู้รับสารตามแนวทางการวางกรอบเรื่องเล่าในการแปล ผลวิจัยพบว่า การแปลข่าวเลือกตั้งประธานาธิบดีสหรัฐอเมริกา ครั้งที่ 59 จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ของฝ่ายข่าวต่างประเทศ สำนักข่าวไทย ใช้กระบวนการแบบจำลองผู้เฝ้าประตูทั้งสี่กระบวนการตามสมมติฐานที่ตั้งไว้ กล่าวคือ พบการตัดข้อมูลมากที่สุด ร้อยละ 55 ตามด้วยการเพิ่มข้อมูล ร้อยละ 20 การจัดเรียงข้อมูลใหม่ ร้อยละ 18 และการแทนที่ข้อมูล ร้อยละ 7 โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์หลักเพื่อส่งเสริมการสื่อสารข้อมูลข้ามวัฒนธรรมและทำให้ผู้รับสารเข้าใจบริบทแวดล้อมของสถานการณ์ต่าง ๆ ตามข้อจำกัดของข่าวออนไลน์ด้วยการจัดลำดับความสำคัญของเนื้อหาและทำให้ข้อมูลสั้นกระชับตามหลักการเขียนข่าวแบบพีระมิดหัวกลับ นอกจากนี้ ผู้วิจัยพบว่าผู้เรียบเรียงยังมีบทบาทต่อการกำหนดกรอบความคิดของผู้รับสารตามแนวทางการวางกรอบเรื่องเล่าในการแปล กล่าวคือ พบว่ามีการกำหนดกรอบโดยการเลือกสรรข้อมูลมากที่สุด ร้อยละ 47 ตามด้วยการกำหนดกรอบโดยการเลือกใช้ถ้อยคำตีตรา ร้อยละ 23 การกำหนดกรอบโดยการเปลี่ยนตำแหน่งผู้เกี่ยวข้องในเหตุการณ์ ร้อยละ 16 และการกำหนดกรอบโดยการใช้เงื่อนเวลาและสถานที่ ร้อยละ 14 โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อรักษาความเป็นกลาง หลีกเลี่ยงประเด็นละเอียดอ่อน และลดความเอนเอียงในการนำเสนอข่าว

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อหาแนวทางการแปลกริยานุเคราะห์ Shall, May และ Will ในข้อบังคับการประชุมสมัชชาสหภาพรัฐสภาและข้อบังคับการประชุมคณะมนตรีบริหารสหภาพรัฐสภาจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย โดยมีคำถามการวิจัยว่ากริยานุเคราะห์ทั้ง 3 คำดังกล่าวมีความหมายและหน้าที่ อย่างไรในบริบทกฎหมายและสามารถแปลเป็นภาษาไทยได้ว่าอะไร ผลการวิจัยจากเอกสารและแหล่งข้อมูลที่เกี่ยวข้องพบว่า กริยานุเคราะห์ Shall, May และ Will ที่ใช้ในข้อบังคับของสหภาพรัฐสภาที่คัดสรรนับว่าเป็นหัวใจสำคัญของประโยค โดยเฉพาะในฐานะคำบอกทัศนะภาวะปริพัทธซึ่งเป็นเรื่องภาวะหน้าที่ การอนุญาต และการสั่งห้าม ในการแปลคำกริยานุเคราะห์ทั้ง 3 คำในตัวบทดังกล่าว ผู้วิจัยจึงนำเสนอแนวทางการแปลซึ่งแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ประเภทหลัก ได้แก่ Shall เป็นเรื่องของพันธะหน้าที่ May เป็นเรื่องของการอนุญาตและดุลยพินิจ และ Will เป็นเรื่องพันธะหน้าที่ซึ่งเกี่ยวโยงกับอนาคตกาลหรือเงื่อนไข โดยรูปภาษาที่ใช้ขึ้นอยู่ลักษณะการใช้งานในแต่ละประโยคและบริบท โดยสามารถอ้างอิงคำที่ใช้ในข้อบังคับการประชุมของรัฐสภาไทยประกอบการแปลได้ ผลการวิจัยและบทแปลที่ได้จากสารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้น่าจะเป็นประโยชน์ต่อสมาชิกรัฐสภา เจ้าหน้าที่รัฐสภา และบุคคลในวงงานรัฐสภาในการนำไปใช้ในภารกิจด้านรัฐสภาระหว่างประเทศของรัฐสภาไทย รวมถึงต่อผู้ที่สนใจเกี่ยวกับการแปลกริยานุเคราะห์ในบริบทต่าง ๆ ต่อไป

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้เป็นวิจัยประเภทโครงการแปลในหัวข้อ ‘การแปลศัพท์เฉพาะทางในข้อเสนอกฎหมายการบริการดิจิทัลและข้อเสนอกฎหมายการตลาดดิจิทัลของสหภาพยุโรป’ มีวัตถุประสงค์ 1) เพื่อศึกษาทฤษฎีและแนวทางด้านการแปลที่เกี่ยวข้อง รวมทั้งศึกษาแนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทประเภทกฎหมาย 2) เพื่อศึกษาและรวบรวมข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับกฎหมายการให้บริการดิจิทัลและกฎหมายการตลาดดิจิทัล 3) เพื่อศึกษาแนวทางการสร้างคำศัพท์และบัญญัติศัพท์เฉพาะทาง 4) เพื่อแปลคำศัพท์เฉพาะทางเกี่ยวกับกฎหมายดิจิทัลจากข้อเสนอกฎหมายการให้บริการดิจิทัลและข้อเสนอกฎหมายการตลาดดิจิทัลในส่วนของบทนิยามและอภิธานศัพท์ที่คณะกรรมาธิการยุโรปจัดทำขึ้นในเว็บไซต์ของตน และ 5) เพื่อแปลตัวบทคัดสรรจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทยจากข้อเสนอกฎหมายทั้งสองฉบับ ผู้วิจัยได้ตั้งสมมติฐานไว้ว่า การแปลคำศัพท์เฉพาะทางเกี่ยวกับกฎหมายดิจิทัลและตัวบทคัดสรรในข้อเสนอกฎหมายการให้บริการดิจิทัลและกฎหมายการตลาดดิจิทัลให้สามารถถ่ายทอดความหมายได้ครบถ้วนและเหมาะสมนั้น จะต้องใช้วิธีการแปลบัญญัติศัพท์ทั้งหมดสามวิธี ได้แก่ 1) วิธีทาบเทียบ (mapping-matching) 2) วิธียืมตรง (direct borrowing) 3) วิธียืมตรงโดยมีคำอธิบายเสริมสั้น ๆ ผลการศึกษาในภาพรวมสนับสนุนสมมติฐานโดยพบว่า วิธีการแปลบัญญัติศัพท์ด้วยวิธีทาบเทียบ (mapping-matching) สามารถนำมาใช้ได้กับคำศัพท์ที่คัดสรรทั้งหมด 17 คำ เช่น Content moderation, Digital Services Coordinator, Very Large Online Platforms คำกลุ่มนี้จะเป็นคำที่ความหมายสามารถนำคำไทยที่มีอยู่แล้วมาแปลเทียบรายคำได้ เนื่องจากมีความหมายไม่ซับซ้อนหรือมีความหมายคนที่ภาษาไทยมีคำที่ใช้แทนความหมายได้อย่างตรงตัวอยู่แล้ว วิธีการแปลบัญญัติศัพท์ด้วยวิธียืมตรง (direct borrowing) สามารถนำมาไปใช้กับคำศัพท์ที่คัดสรรทั้งหมดสามคำ ได้แก่ online interface, cloud computing services, และ software application คำกลุ่มนี้จะเป็นคำที่มีใจความที่ใหม่สำหรับวัฒนธรรมไทย และมีความหมายค่อนข้างซับซ้อน ทำให้ไม่มีคำไทยเดิมที่เหมาะแก่การนำมาใช้เพื่อสื่อความได้อย่างสั้นและกระชับ วิธีการแปลบัญญัติศัพท์ด้วยวิธียืมตรงโดยมีคำอธิบายเสริมสั้น ๆ ไม่ปรากฏคำศัพท์คัดสรรที่ต้องใช้วิธีนี้ในการแปล นอกจากนี้ วิธีการแปลนอกเหนือจากสมมติฐานที่ผู้วิจัยนำมาใช้มีสามวิธี ได้แก่ 1) แปลโดยการใช้คำศัพท์ที่มีอยู่แล้วประกอบคำอธิบายเพิ่มเติมและใช้แนวทางการบัญญัติศัพท์ด้วยวิธีทาบเทียบ (mapping-matching) (8 คำ) 2) แปลแบบตีความและใช้แนวทางการบัญญัติด้วยวิธีแปลยืม (loan translation) ในส่วนหนึ่งของคำและแปลโดยใช้วิธียืมตรง (direct borrowing) ในอีกส่วนหนึ่ง (1 คำ) และ 3) แปลแบบตีความและใช้แนวทางการบัญญัติด้วยวิธีทาบเทียบ (mapping-matching) ในส่วนหนึ่งของคำและแปลโดยใช้วิธียืมตรง (direct borrowing) ในอีกส่วนหนึ่ง (1 คำ)
