With this exhibition, I strive to create sculptures that reveal beauty and act as a visual reminder of the destruction we have caused by decades of industrial negligence and greed. Using the principles and elements of design I hope to create visually stimulating objects that resembles the beauty found in the hills of Appalachia. A dialogue is fostered that influences future generations by bringing to light the reality of our past transgressions.

What is a viewer? Who can be a viewer? What is the purpose of a viewer? Is viewing an artwork a process? How does a viewer interact with an artwork? What is an artist? Are the formal elements or conceptual natures more important in art making? Why is that art? These questions and more direct me in how and why I make my art.
I will be discussing the relationship between the viewer and the artwork in an artwork experience. I will define an artwork experience using an analysis of Michael Fried’s notion of theatricality, relating the viewer to the …

“Our Gang”
The process of scooping up earth with a little blue spoon taught me to dig deeper. My ceramic sculptures of imaginative but vulnerable children begins with close observation and builds a rich visual memory. My memories of my elementary school classmates fused with photographic references provide rich resources for the children in Our Gang.
In my studio I draw the figure out with the bone structure, so I can see how to move the parts without losing the anatomy. Planning and measuring on a pre-made guide for uniformity and precise measurements is important in keeping the size of …

Up until about the 1960’s, sculpture was dominated by work made with metal, wood, or stone. These materials would be described as “hard” or “masculine,” while materials such as fabric or yarn are described as “soft” or “feminine.” Fabric is known for its softness and malleability and is commonly used to cover the human body for objects such as clothing or bedding. The materials that I have selected are generally considered soft, yet protective, but are also thought of as insubstantial and fragile. As a child, I would see quilts and hear stories about how my maternal grandmother and great-grandmother …

Photography, Visual Culture, And The (Re)Definition/Queering Of The Male Gaze, David Nicholas Martin
Theses and Dissertations--Art and Visual Studies
The traditional notion of the Male Gaze, first conceptualized by feminist film critic Laura Mulvey in 1975, focused on the objectification of women through depictions structured to gratify a male heterosexual perspective. In this chapter we will revisit this concept and investigate how that gaze may have shifted away from a primarily heterosexual perspective to a socially dominant male perspective (maleness here referring to dominance rather than specific gender, just as “whiteness” might refer to privilege rather than race). With gender roles in an increasingly global and mobile society becoming more fluid and complex, opening up visibility to LGBTQ communities, …

Classically Formal, Biotic Subjectivity: Moderating Plastic's Relation To The Viewer, Tirza Jo Ochrach-Konradi
Scripps Senior Theses
Due to its cheap, pervasive, and disposable nature, post-consumer plastic has no subjectivity in its relation to the consumer. My thesis project examines the material’s inherent destructive narrative and question its ability to have extrinsic value beyond the assumptions of trash. In my research, I found that humans instinctually seek to conserve and treat biotic material with care. This fact has become a catalyst for the works in this project, which aim to not only increase the material’s value through animate biomorphic transformation, but also counter our disposable tendencies.
At the onset of this project, I was fixated solely on …

A Fiction Of Fragmented Falsehoods: Curriculum Of Unwanted Roads Traveled, Katherine Wyatt
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This is an inquiry centered on lived ‘otherness’ in different social experiences. Fiction and illustrations are both creative outlets that provide opportunities of curriculum growth by offering the viewer realistic portrayals dealing with truth and factors that make us fundamentally human. “Fiction elicits an interpretation of the world by being itself a worldlike object for interpretation” (Dillard, 1988, p. 155). This study uses fiction and illustrations as vehicles of communication to provide an awareness regarding social issues in everyday lived experiences, exposing the reader to the social, cultural and historical realities persistently impeding the shared constructs of human experiences. Structuring …

Written In Bone: Damage Patterns In Agonopsis Vulsa Armor, Morgan Stewart
Scripps Senior Theses
Naturally occurring armor has evolved in many different classes of organisms, often in response to predation, although other factors may play a part. In this study, the scales of the benthic armored fish Agonopsis vulsa were examined for damage patterns in order to illuminate the life history and environmental interactions of the fish. Scales from the fish were systematically destroyed in the lab, and observations made from the damaged scales were used to create a categorical damage rating, which was applied to 34 specimens ranging in trunk length from 2.3 cm to 14.2 cm. The specimens were rendered as three-dimensional …

La Enfermedad Florece En El Desierto, Xochilt Alejandra Sequeira Aguilar
Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Dance and American Sign Language (ASL) are two separate entities which share a place in the world as communication through movement. For this project, I extended my knowledge and understanding of two disciplines, ASL and dance, through evidence-based research practices while integrating that research with my creative process and experience within a classroom-based setting. Through this framework of research, coursework, and experimentation, I drew relations between dance and ASL as communication. The results of my research are presented in this report as well as in a piece of choreography I created based on the integration of ASL with a choreographic …

The research project, Kardía; A Choreographic Investigation Utilizing the Human Heart, examined how findings regarding the study of the heart influences and expands choreographic options for and approaches to dance as a work of art. The heart is a unique and intricate organ that helps sustain life within a human body. Examined for this project were the structure, actions and functions of the human heart. This data informed and inspired the concepts that were applied to my choreography, culminating in the presentation of my original work entitled Kardía; The Quietest Voice. The creative process I used for this project …

Culture, as defined by Edward Said, is a concept of identity selectively curated through imperialism. Through my ceramic practice, I explore what constitutes my cultural identity as a first generation Arab American. My work, primarily influenced by family narrative was initially expressed through investigations in the figure and viewer relationships with my sculpted figures. As my research progressed into Western Imperialism, I began noticing extensive evidence of colonialism’s lasting effects, especially within Western consumer markets. Interest in the writings of Said, works by French Orientalist painters, family memory, and a general displeasure with the plethora of Middle Eastern design used …

Second Wind is a kinetic, responsive art installation which examines invisible processes taking place in and around a Ponderosa pine tree. Wind speed data, measured at 20', 25', 30', 35', and 40' in the canopy of a Ponderosa on the University of Montana campus, is translated into the gallery in real time using two Raspberry Pi single-board computers. This data determines the velocity of five fans in the gallery. Each fan interacts with a suspended vellum paper structure which moves more or less depending on wind speed. The vellum is painted with an ink made of fermented pine needles from …

“Topiary Forest” is an exploration into the transformative actions of my hands, my role in a culture which exploits nature, the separation of nature and culture, and the pressure to commodify any and all processes of creation. The project consists of thirty tree fragments which I made on the lathe, and with various saws, sanders, and carving tools. The trees arose out of a need to visually explore the frictions between traditional definitions of nature and culture, and a desire to question the disparities between my love of nature and my involvement in the ongoing exploitation of it. In making …
