《嶺南學報》復刊，已經第八輯。這是第一次較集中地刊載現當代文學研究的論文。我們是在2015 年春開始策劃相關專輯的。最初我和系内教現代文學的同事商議，開一個“故事新編與穿越”的會。不久我在港大開會碰到王德威談起這個設想，我們覺得這個題目必然關涉現當代，也必然與古典有關。“穿越”課題既是熱點又是“禁區”，卻鮮有嚴肅的學術討論。我們想請些行内的專家來，平心静氣地討論。王教授很感興趣，答應一定會來。同年秋天，學報主編蔡宗齊教授建議把會議題目改爲“現代與古典文學的相互穿越：故事新編與理論重建”，話題從現當代創作擴展到理論，時間跨度則涵蓋古典和現當代。事實上，後來在會上宣讀的論文，的確可分兩類，一是研討現當代創作的“穿越”現象，二是理論研究中的“跨學科”實踐。

追摹、混搭與穿越 : 晚清畫報中的古今對話, Pingyuan Chen

學界多看重晚清畫報的“中外互動”，若能同時兼及“古今對話”，論述將更具張力。因爲，思接千古乃人類思考及文化創造的基本模式，只不過不同時代，古今之間的對立／ 對峙／對話的强度與頻率有很大差異。本文將畫報作爲一個“大文本”看待，討論其中新聞與古事如何騰挪趨避，趣味與筆法怎樣互相交融，並借此造成某種新奇感與陌生化效果。

Beliefs In Advance Care Planning Among Chinese Americans: Similarities And Differences Between The Younger And Older Generations, Mei Ching Lee, Ha Do Byon, Katherine Hinderer, Carla Alexander

The purpose of this research is to explore behavioral, normative, and control beliefs in the discussion of advance care planning (ACP) among older and younger Chinese Americans. Ethnic minority groups have been identified as less engaged in ACP and this represents an ethnic and cultural gap. Older Chinese American adults often have different beliefs and values compared to the younger generation who are more acculturated to American mainstream culture. These differences may hinder the discussion of ACP with Chinese older adults.

A qualitative design was used. The Theory of Planned Behavior guided the development of the interview guide. We recruited …

Third Year Chinese Conversation course description:
This course meets once a week for 75 minutes and concentrates on the further development of skills in speaking and listening through multimedia materials (including selected movies and clips). Students are required to read chosen texts (including Internet materials and short stories) and prepare assignments for the purpose of generating discussion in class. Moreover, students will write out skits or reports for oral presentation in Chinese before they present them in class. The class is conducted entirely in Chinese.

Political participation is a fundamental component of democracy. But the level of immigrants’ political participation is generally lower than for people who are perceived as natives. This paper identifies the determinants of six Chinese immigrants’ political participation in Cape Town, part of a group that has a long history of political integration but is still often seen as passive and apolitical. It argues and tests the effect of five main determinants related to the length of residence, interaction with the local Chinese association, socioeconomic background, language ability and prior political experience, and social perceptions. "Xi" is the symbolic symbol of the musicality of Chuci. The construction of the "standard" for the musicality of the Chuci style is based on the translation of "the songs of Yue" and "the songs of Chu" and also on the relationship between the "song" and "words" in Yufu. 兮(xi), as a function word in text, is a vocal representation of musicality. This paper presents the dimensions of future in Walter Benjamin's philosophy of history. Benjamin refused a systematized future which caused the oblivion of the failures. Benjamin puts forward a kind of philosophy of history whose future is illuminated by the unjustness of the past to the future. This philosophy of history which is loyal to the ethic of time regards the past as an incomplete one which carries the responsibility of the memory and establishes an ethical relation between the past and the future, opening to the others as widely as possible.

This paper finds an obvious change in Chinese popular culture through analyzing the stories of going abroad since the 1990s: the leading character spares no effort to seek American Dream during the early 1990s, but turns back since 2008. It has become a significant narrative mode, and clearly demonstrated the changes of the image of America. From seeking American Dream to realizing Chinese Dream, it narrates a changed China via leading character's return; and it is also a story about how Chinese Dream replaces American Dream. Xin Qiji wrote 24 Ci poems to the tune of Lin Jiang Xian. These Ci poems' conservation makes him own the largest quantity of Ci poems to the tune of Lin Jiang Xian in the northern and southern Song dynasties. Thus, he possesses a significant place in writing Ci poems to the tune of Lin Jiang Xian and its phylogeny. Xin Qiji's 24 Ci poems are all chosen the basic double tonal patterns and rhyme schemes of Ci poems with 60 characters, and its rhyme is strictly managed. In his study of some literary canons, René Girard, a French literary critic and anthropologist, analyzes human desire and sums up the theory of mimetic desire, which means that a person's desire, as the desire of the subject, always imitates the similar desire that belongs to the mediator of the desire. Girard distinguishes the modes of mimetic desire into two types, the external mediation and the internal mediation, and draws a conclusion that the internal mediation would inevitably lead to violence due to the competition between the subject and the mediator. In this interview, Professor Samuel Weber vividly reviews his personal study experience with Adorno in the 1960s, reveling some features of Adorno's thoughts such as the teleological tendency and non-identity. Based on Adorno's current situation and the limits of his general concept, Professor Weber and the interviewer discuss the inevitable barrier between the social critical theory and the political action plans. He further develops "repetition" and "singularity" from Kierkegaard, Walter Benjamin and Derrida, which focus on the concrete things.
