Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
Smart Chinese Reader is a program based on NLP (natural language processing) technology to help you learn Chinese language through deep reading. It provides Chinese word segmentation, Chinese part of speech tagging, Chinese to English translation, example sentence search, and text to speech conversion. Compared with dictionary apps, it lets you gain more Chinese language knowledge (meanings and usages of Chinese words, patterns and even rhythms of Chinese sentences) from a text, rather than just to get through the text. It makes your Chinese learning more effective.

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
Hanban teachers have made important contributions to the spreading of Chinese language and culture in the US. They also experience great cultural shocks during their teaching, which greatly challenge their life, work and even their physical and mental health. What are those cultural shocks? What are the causes of them? Can we find out some methods to prevent or deal with them? The present study, by employing classroom observation, interview, and self-reflection approaches, investigates the cultural shocks Hanban teachers commonly encounter during their teaching in K-12 schools in the State of Ohio, and conducts analysis of the causes of these …

China And The Politics Of Cross–Cultural Representation In Interwar European Fiction, Carles Prado-Fonts
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "China and the Politics of Cross–Cultural Representation in Interwar European Fiction" Carles Prado-Fonts analyzes Joan Crespi's La ciutat de la por (The City of Fear, 1930) to illustrate the varied representations of China in interwar Europe. In the 1920s and 1930s, a plurality of views on China and the Chinese people became widespread across different parts of Europe, mainly shaped by English, French, and German representations. Contradictory images of China coexisted in literature, thought, and popular culture. Crespi's work exemplifies these contradictions: China appears as both an attainable reality and an unreachable fantasy, two tropes that prevailed …

Sai Ho Ma
Lingnan Theses

Man Lung Chong
Lingnan Theses

Contested Moral Issues In Contemporary African Catholicism: Theological Proposals For A Hermeneutics Of Multiplicity And Inclusion, Stan Chu Ilo
Journal of Global Catholicism
Drawing upon the broad work of Vatican II and Pope Francis’ Evangelicum Gaudium the article proposes how a hermeneutic of multiplicity and inclusion could help hold in balance the tension between tradition and innovation, universal principles and specific contextual application for Catholicism in Africa. Among the issues addressed are cultural relativism, natural law theory, and polygamy.

Academic Freedom As A Human Right: The Problem Of Confucius Institutes, Jay Todd Richey
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Academic freedom is the ability to explore, research, and analyze any topic without prohibitions or repercussions. In the Anglo-American tradition, it is both a fundamental aspect of academia and, as this thesis argues, a fundamental human right. Although the United States embraces this core principle of academia within American universities, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) seeks to suppress the acquisition of knowledge through restrictions on topics deemed politically-sensitive to the Chinese government. Although human rights abuses pervade the PRC and academic freedom is suppressed, PRC-funded entities known as Confucius Institutes (CIs) are widely embraced at universities in liberal democracies. …

This study tests the salience/prominence of Chinese ethnic identity by applying identity theory, social identity theory, and social network analysis. Using survey data of Chinese graduate students in two universities in the United States, I show how Chinese ethnic identity salience varies with the percentage of Chinese in an individual’s ego network revolving around him or her. In addition, among newcomers to the United States, as the percentage Chinese in ego networks increases, the decline of Chinese identity salience/prominence declines, but for old timers in the United States, as the percentage Chinese increases, the decline of Chinese identity salience/prominence is …

The Invention Of "Japanese" Literature In Colonial Korea, Or How Shameless Literary Engagement Could Be Under Colonial Conditions, Mihara Yoshiaki
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This is the full-paper version of the 338th Si-Mian Lecture delivered at ECNU on March 17, 2017, which focuses on the "shameless" act of intellectual collaboration committed by Ch'oe Chaes ô (崔載瑞), an eminent scholar of English literature and criticism as well as a prominent "pro-Japanese" intellectual in Colonial Korea, who encouraged Korean writers to contribute to Japanese "kokumin bungaku" [national literature] by writing in the Japanese language. Rather than simply denouncing him as a "shameless" traitor, however, the author of this article tries to salvage the potentially postcolonial problematics he has posed in his theoretical struggle as regards possible …

The Literary Concepts Through Novel Titles Of The Ming And Qing Dynasties, Guofu Cheng
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Titles are special insight into the Ming and Qing novel writing. Through an examination of the texts, prefaces and epilogues, the records of book production, guidelines for book use, book reviews, notes etc. the paper explores the literary concepts reflected by the Ming and Qing novels. Specifically, novel titles can be interpreted in four respects, namely, the novel as a supplement to history, the novel as admonishment, the novel as entertainment, and the novel as true feelings. Through these concepts we may have a better understanding of the significance and the evolution of the literary concepts of the Ming and …

The Origin Of The Title "The Four Dreams Of Linchuan" And The Deep Significance Of The Peony Pavilion, Baocheng Kang, Yanfang Chen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The title "the Four Dream of Linchuan" is not in accordance with the facts of the four Chuanqi plays written by Tang Xianzu, for "The Purple Hairpin", one of the "four dreams" has little to do with "dream" of any kind. Inspired by "the Four Dreams" written by Che Renyuan and the folk song "4 dreams 8 voids" in The Plum in the Golden Vase, Tang Xianzu himself began to use the title of "the Four Dreams of Linchuan". The title was rarely recognized till the late Ming Dynasty, but it became popular during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of …
