3d Printing Of Bone Spurs Before Surgical Removal, Matthew Chadwick, John Paul Prodoehl, Katelyn Koons, Chris Li, Lauren Schlegel, Jeffrey Henstenburg, Md

Phase 1

Project Background: In the US alone, total knee arthroplasty is the most common performed orthopedic surgery, with over 700,000 cases per year.1 Overall, 21-25% underwent revision due to instability.2 The stability of a TKA depends largely on soft tissue balance for proper alignment in flexion and extension. Soft tissue balancing in TKA depends on posterior femoral condylar osteophytes, which prevent full extension of the knee and increase tension posteriorly. Pre-operative soft tissue visualization is difficult and this leaves an increased chance for implant failure and revision surgery. Having a 3D model of the bone spur before and during the surgery …

Rescue Stenting For Failed Mechanical Thrombectomy Procedures, Joseph Schaefer, Ahmad Sweid, MD, M. Reid Gooch, MD, Pascal Jabbour, MD 2020 Thomas Jefferson University

Rescue Stenting For Failed Mechanical Thrombectomy Procedures, Joseph Schaefer, Ahmad Sweid, Md, M. Reid Gooch, Md, Pascal Jabbour, Md

Phase 1

Background: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) has dramatically changed the natural history of acute ischemic stroke. The disease that was associated with high morbidity, mortality, and significant cost on the health care system became a treatable disease. One of the most important variables to improve outcomes is time to revascularize the ischemic tissue. Rescue stenting (RS) is an option for patients who fail MT.

Methods: A retrospective chart review for patients who underwent a MT procedure and either failed (defined as TICI 0-2a) or required a RS from 2015 – 2019 composed the study population. IRB approval was obtained and the consent …

Renewing Hearts: Catholic Perspectives In Valve Replacement Surgery For Those Who Use Intravenous Drugs, Kimberly Feeney, Robert Perkel, MD 2020 Thomas Jefferson University

Renewing Hearts: Catholic Perspectives In Valve Replacement Surgery For Those Who Use Intravenous Drugs, Kimberly Feeney, Robert Perkel, Md

Phase 1

Introduction: The incidence of infectious endocarditis has been increasing, particularly among those with a history of intravenous drug use (IVDU). Although current bioethics literature supports valve surgery as treatment for this patient population, clinical guidelines and literature continues to provide unclear recommendations for physicians. Catholic bioethics may provide a different perspective to re-contextualize the recommendations of secular ethics.

Methods: A PubMed search was used to gain background information regarding the incidence of infectious endocarditis and current treatment guidelines, as well as historical and current ethical considerations. Search terms included: “infectious endocarditis,” “IE,” “intravenous drug use,” “IVDU,” “ethics.” Related citations were …

Investigation Of Molecular Mechanisms Of Liver Preservation Injury: A Complication Preceding Organ Transplantation, Ria C. Fyffe-Freil 2020 Virginia Commonwealth University

Investigation Of Molecular Mechanisms Of Liver Preservation Injury: A Complication Preceding Organ Transplantation, Ria C. Fyffe-Freil

Theses and Dissertations

Of the over 108,000 American awaiting a life-saving organ transplant today, over 12,000 (11%) of those need a new liver (OPTN, 2020). Last year, only 35% of patients on the waiting list for an organ were transplanted. Improving the quality of marginal organs by preventing or reversing preservation injury could vastly increase the number of transplants performed. Washout of circulating blood during liver procurement with cold University of Wisconsin solution flushes out any endogenous pro-survival signaling molecules. We investigated lysophospholipid (LPL) surface receptors (G-protein coupled receptors for lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and sphingosine- 1-phosphate (S1P)) and their role in protecting hepatocytes …

Age Related Changes In The Expression Of Tenascin-C In Liver Of Albino Rat, Mohammed Mohammed, Mohammed Mokhtar El Assaly, Hamdino Attia

Al-Azhar International Medical Journal

Abstract Background: Aging is a gradual deterioration in the function of tissues and organ systems with loss of the ability to maintain homeostasis, due to structural alteration or dysfunction. Aging impact directly on all the different types of liver cells: hepatocytes, liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs), Küpffer cells (KCs) and hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Activation of HSCs leads to deposition of collagen in the space of Disse, decrease of fenestrations of LSECs and formation of basement membrane. These changes called pseudocapillarization. Tenascin-C (TN-C) is an extracellular matrix glycoprotein markedly up-regulated during liver fibrosis. Tenascin-C is highly expressed during embryonic development, …

Oophorectomy, Ashli A. Lawson, Rebecca M. Rentea 2020 Children's Mercy Hospital

Oophorectomy, Ashli A. Lawson, Rebecca M. Rentea

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Oophorectomy is the surgical removal of the ovary and can be unilateral or bilateral. Hysterectomy is the most common major gynecologic surgery, but salpingo-oophorectomy remains a frequent concomitant surgery. Surgery for ovarian pathology alone is still often encountered in females of all ages. While surgical removal of one ovary does not grossly affect the hormonal milieu of a patient, bilateral oophorectomy will render a patient infertile and menopausal with ensuing physiologic changes and risks. Forward-thinking discussions should be held with the patient before undertaking an oophorectomy.

Retroperitoneal Hematoma, Christopher Mondie, Rebecca M. Rentea 2020 Children's Mercy Hospital

Retroperitoneal Hematoma, Christopher Mondie, Rebecca M. Rentea

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Retroperitoneal hematoma is defined as bleeding into the retroperitoneal space. This clinical entity is often occult and under-recognized by clinicians and is a cause of significant morbidity and mortality. Often patients do not manifest clinically apparent signs and symptoms until a substantial amount of blood loss has occurred. It is not uncommon for patients to present in frank hemorrhagic shock due to an underlying retroperitoneal hematoma. The retroperitoneal space lies directly posterior to the peritoneal cavity. An organizational schema dividing the retroperitoneal space into three different “zones” is widely prevalent in the surgical literature. The central-medial zone (Zone I) falls …
