Modified Early Warning Scoring (Mews) Versus Epic Deterioration Index (Edi): Battle Royale For Which Has The Best Patient Outcomes In The Inpatient Setting, 2023 University of Kentucky
Modified Early Warning Scoring (Mews) Versus Epic Deterioration Index (Edi): Battle Royale For Which Has The Best Patient Outcomes In The Inpatient Setting, Dirk A. Church
DNP Projects
Abstract
Background: The increased workload bedside nurses face today requires new tools to assist with the identification of deteriorating patients during hospitalization. The Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) tool has formed the background of early warning tools. Newer, more complex tools, like Epic’s Deterioration Index (EDI), have been developed to identify patient deterioration earlier. There is lack of evidence in the literature comparing different early warning tools, implementation, and patient outcomes.
Objective: The purpose of the study was to examine models for EWS notification for RRT and patient outcomes between the use of the MEWS and EDI in an adult, …
An Analytical Study Of The Risk Factors Affecting The Platelet Aggregation In Patients With Sepsis, 2023 Departments of Medicine , Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdar Jang Hospital, New Delhi, India
An Analytical Study Of The Risk Factors Affecting The Platelet Aggregation In Patients With Sepsis, Vishnu Priya, Jitender M. Khunger, Anupma Arora
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Objectives (a) To determine the correlation of platelet count and aggregation with sepsis severity and (b) to find the risk factors affecting the platelet aggregation in sepsis. Patients and methods The present observational cross-sectional study was conducted on 30 patients of sepsis over a period of 18 months. All patients underwent complete blood counts, and platelet aggregation to ADP. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to assess the association of Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score and aggregation to ADP and platelet. Linear regression was done to determine the risk factors affecting platelet aggregation in sepsis. A P value of less …

Short QT syndrome (SQTS) is a rare inherited arrhythmogenic disorder characterized by abnormally short QT interval on electrocardiogram (ECG) secondary to a cardiac channelopathy in the absence of structural heart disease.3 Defective function of the potassium-calcium ion channels in SQTS patients facilitates an increased risk of ventricular and atrial arrhythmias, which can lead to symptoms such as syncope or cardiac arrest.2 In this report, we present a 24-year-old male with a past medical history SQTS with prior cardiac arrest and ventricular fibrillation, status post ICD placement and cardiac sympathectomy, who presented with increased …

Intracranial subdural empyema (ISE) is a rare infection of brain, which occurs when pus is collectively located in the space between dura and arachnoid matter. In the past, its mortality was nearly 100%, if it was not treated appropriately within 24-48 hours. Thanks to improvement of diagnostic modalities and treatment, its mortality has dramatically decreased. Though, it can still cause a devastating consequence if it is not managed in a timely manner. The common etiology of ISE is different depending on the age group. In younger patients, it occurs frequently as a complication of infection in neighboring structures like sinusitis …

Pain In The Back – A Rare Case Of Atraumatic Paraspinal Compartment Syndrome, Muhammad Rehan, Jodi Perry
East Florida Research Day 2023
Introduction: Paraspinal Compartment Syndrome (PCS) is a well-documented complication after trauma and orthopedic injuries though incidence of atraumatic PCS in individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) is not well documented. We present a case of a middle-aged man with acute PCS after intravenous (IV) amphetamine use.
Case Description: 40-years-old male with a history of substance use disorder was brought in for evaluation after being found wandering naked in the streets. He admitted to relapsing and using 0.5 grams of IV amphetamine. He was found to be agitated, energetic, and endorsed visual and auditory hallucinations. Initial physical examination showed no focal …
Management Of Opioid Use Disorder In Primary Care, 2023 Arcadia University
Management Of Opioid Use Disorder In Primary Care, Carolyn Jeffries
Capstone Showcase
The prevalence of opioid use disorder (OUD) in the United States, and worldwide, has drastically increased in the span of 2-3 years. OUD is considered chronic condition and as such requires routine care over a lifetime. This makes OUD patients excellent candidates to be managed by primary care providers (PCPs). This article discusses the various barriers to treatment of OUD in a primary care setting as well methods and models that aim to mitigate these barriers. We will also review how to take a detailed assessment of an OUD patient, mainstays of medication assisted treatment (MAT), and management of side …

A Clinical Profile Of 50 Cases Of Hypoglycemia In A Tertiary Care Hospital, Rohan Karkra, Ravikumar Y S
Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
Hypoglycemia is defined as a blood glucose level/dl. It is usually seen in Diabetics due to an improper balance between blood glucose-lowering drugs and food. Patients can have various symptoms, ranging from headaches and palpitations to coma and death. Patients are typically treated with oral carbohydrates and IV carbohydrates/Glucagon if needed. It is essential to understand the presenting complaints of Hypoglycemia as it often complicates the management of Diabetic patients, and sometimes non-Diabetic patients. The symptoms may frequently be mild but can cause significant long-term complications. It is also essential to understand the cause of Hypoglycemia in order to prevent …
