Of all powers given to local governments, the power to zone is one of the most significant. Zoning dictates everything that gets built in a locality—and thus effectively dictates all of the key activities that take place within it. Nationwide, most zoning codes were adopted in the first half of the twentieth century. Many, including the zoning codes of New York City and Chicago, were significantly revised in the 1960s. While these codes have been revised piecemeal, just a few American cities have undergone a comprehensive revision: replacing the old code with a completely new one.

Graduation Addresses

Commencement took place in a virtual format, broadcast via YouTube and Vimeo on the morning of May 16, 2020. More than 205 Juris Doctor, Master of Laws and Master in the Study of Law graduates were recognized in the online video ceremony.

U.S. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Sri Srinivasan delivered the keynote address. Srinivasan was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for District of Columbia Circuit in May 2013, after serving as the principal deputy solicitor general of the United States for two years and arguing 25 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The urgency to prepare for the climate crisis has never been greater. We are currently living in the sixth mass extinction and the effects are only going to accelerate. We will inherit more wildfires, larger wildfires, and more frequent wildfires.

This piece is not meant to stoke fear in its readers or be depressing, but to shift public perception on what our future holds by evaluating the laws and science presented to us. This piece will look at regional and federal regulations and assess the increased rate of forest fires and the grave public health concerns from stagnant smoke specifically …
