Leadership in any setting is hard, often physically as well as emotionally. Academic leadership requires a full-dimensional, mind-body-soul effort that uniquely calls upon one’s baseline character, positionality, and preparation for leadership. Our willingness and ability to read the word as we also read the world combine to shape our approach and range as leaders. And ultimately, our legacy is our imprint on people. This article shares the views of a law school dean on how life experiences, leadership lessons, and book learning intertwine to inform our humanity and charter our influence on people and organizations.

Law students have been faced with unparalleled stress during the syndemic. They must cope with being students during the COVID-19 pandemic but also must deal with stress related to social and political unrest. This essay recommends that law schools apply social support theory in developing interventions to effectively address the needs of law students now and in the future.

Social support theory focuses on the value and benefits one receives from positive interpersonal relationships. These positive relationships impact both mental and physical health and promote beneficial short and long-term overall health. However, not all supports are the same, and social …

A formidable body of research and scholarship describes the unique difficulties faced by various minoritized groups within our law schools. Women, people of color, those with disabilities, LGBTQ+ people, and all those outside, overlapping, or in-between have powerfully described how their turn through legal academia was marked by discrimination, disconnection, and isolation. Law school has been described as a “white space,” and can also be viewed through the lens of white supremacy: a way to uphold and perpetuate a system of racial hierarchy. When I think about Egon, the first thing that comes to mind are the memories when we met in 1982 at the Washington College of Law (WCL), where he was working as a full-time faculty member. I was coming at that time from my sabbatical in the Netherlands and as a Fulbright Scholar. From the beginning, Egon sought to provide me with a welcoming environment. The inspiration for this Article was the 2021 Conference of the Global Alliance for Justice Education (GAJE), a biannual gathering since 1999 of law educators and others interested in justice education from around the world. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was conducted virtually. During the three-day conference, over 450 participants from 45 countries gathered to participate in the sharing of workshops and presentations, ranging from discussions of papers to five-minute "lightning talks." Legal issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are critical for attorneys to recognize and understand in the practice of law. Legal research is one part of the law school curriculum through which students can significantly examine DEI issues. This article provides practical insights for managing legal research classrooms to support productive discussions about legal issues affecting diverse groups, including race, gender, sexual orientation, and religion. The authors explore DEI-related classroom management for in-person, online, and hybrid formats; provide classroom management scenarios to consider; and discuss how each scenario might be handled to maintain a healthy classroom environment.

Exclusivity in legal education divides traditional scholars, students, and impacted communities most disproportionately harmed by the legal education system. While traditional legal scholars tend to embrace traditional legal education, organic jurists—those who are historically excluded from legal education and those who educate themselves and their communities about their legal rights and realities—often reject the inaccessibility of legal education and its power. There is pervasive litigation bias in law schools. Despite significant interest in transactional law fields among law students, law schools disproportionately teach to the student interested in litigation: litigation-based legal writing assignments outnumber transactional-based ones 19 to 1; litigation-based clinics outnumber transactional ones 9 to 1; and doctrinal classes focus primarily on appellate court cases, often failing to entertain substantive discussion on the creation or content of the documents that led to the dispute. As a result, law school graduates are 44% less prepared for transactional careers than litigation careers.

These are phenomenally challenging times. Mindfulness is a tool that can help lawyers support themselves, each other, their clients, and their collaborators in the hard work needed to build community and take action. For these and other reasons, mindfulness has made major inroads into law and legal institutions. Law firms, law schools, and courthouses offer training in mindfulness meditation to support the cognitive clarity and emotional self-regulation necessary for the demanding work of analyzing problems, resolving conflicts, overcoming bias, and doing justice. Effective lawyering requires the ability to manage contradictory yet interdependent practices. In their role as traditionally understood, lawyers must fight, judge, debate, minimize risk, and advance clients’ interests. Yet increasingly, lawyers must ALSO collaborate, build trust, innovate, enable effective risk-taking, and hold clients accountable for adhering to societal values. Law students and lawyers alike struggle, often unproductively, to reconcile these tensions. Law schools often address them as a dilemma requiring a choice or overlook the contradictions that interfere with their integration.

As the practice of law, and the conduct of business generally, focuses increasingly on virtual communication, the ethics and professionalism challenges inherent in email, videoconference, text, and telephone communication continue to evolve. These challenges are particularly prevalent in transactional practice, which involves frequent communication with a variety of parties through a variety of communication channels. Exposing law students to these challenges through exercises and simulations contributes to the continued development of their professional identity as lawyers.
