The Arulmigu Kamatchi Amman Devasthanam, located on Jalan Dato Keramat, in Penang, Malaysia provides entry into the cultural world of Pathars, the traditional Tamil goldsmiths who have long established their business in Penang. The continuity of this temple is studied through its spatial attributes and social impact in anchoring collective community experience Primary data was acquired through ethnography and secondary data was drawn from a document and photo review. The proliferation of print media in early-twentieth-century Siam coincided with the rising popularity of folk vocal music. By the 1920s, certain styles of folk balladry were appropriated by urban writers for news reportage and sociopolitical criticism with doses of sensationalization. Published in periodicals and chapbooks, this popular literature was characterized by its versification of true crimes and its typical focus on the figure of the criminal or the ghost. Because of the long colonial history in that area, it was natural that creating bilateral relations between Britain and the two former colonized parties (India and Pakistan) would be challenging and not free of issues. Information on drug use should be easily comprehensible and provide clear instructions without relying on expert advice. Drawing upon the concept of lay-friendly translation (Askehave and Zethsen 2002, 2014; Jensen 2013), this study examines the translated information leaflets and labels of drug-related and cosmeceutical products in Thailand to understand characteristics of supposedly reachable language use. The findings reveal both lay-friendly and non-lay-friendly features in the English-to-Thai translations. Indicative of the former is the use of general terms, explanation, glossing, rewriting/summarising, syntactical shift, and stylistic shift. This study examines the linguistic landscape (ll) of university campuses in Thailand and proposes the term “linguistic uniscape” (lu). It attempts to examine whether there is a significant difference in the code preference for signage between the public universities (puu s) and the private universities (pru s) in Thailand and examines the different social meanings of the signage at the puu s and at the pru s by using place semiotics (ps) theory. This paper examines Thai author Prabda Yoon’s Basement Moon, a 2018 science fictional novel that embodies the belief that art and science can play a vital role in triggering critical consciousness that keeps alive the spirit of dissent. A close reading of the novel also reveals that it mirrors several key concepts and ideas promoted by Gramsci pertaining to power relations between the ruling class and those under them and the educational roles of art and science. Female phantasms of the living and the dead that appear in Japanese folklore and literature involve a dual image of women: the representation of a patriarchal ideal of women, and the monstrous double that revolts against that ideal. Representations of this folklore-inspired ideal/monstrous woman can be seen in a wide-ranging array of twentieth and twenty-first century Japanese fiction, from the early cannibalistic spirits in folklore-inspired tales to Romantic and Absurdist works to possession narratives. This article examines Beth Yahp’s novel The Crocodile Fury (1992) to explore how the novel’s fusion of conventions of the literary gothic and elements from indigenous folklore respond to the conditions of gendered and colonised oppression in the marginalised subject. By situating the many iterations of the titular “crocodile” as a quasi-mythic animal in Malay lore against the three major instances of physical transformations from the human to the grotesque non-human in the narrative, this article seeks to analyse how such transformations participate in a dialectic of oppression and liberation for such marginalised characters. Dating back many years, Marian devotion is currently a ubiquitous phenomenon among Vietnamese Catholics in Vietnam. This article examines the endeavours of specific global Catholic missionary societies – the Society of Jesus (S.J.), the Dominican Order or the Order of Preachers (O.P.) and the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris (mep) – in spreading Marian devotion in pre-twentieth-century Vietnam. In doing so, the article seeks to demonstrate that the prevalence of Marian devotion primarily resulted from the enduring efforts of global Catholic missionaries during the stages of proselytization. This is a full memoir manuscript that I wrote for my MFA thesis, which is tentatively titled Foreign Expert. In this manuscript, we follow myself as narrator as I struggle to adapt to life in Beijing (prior to the pandemic) while also recovering from a recent divorce. The man I’d been married to for five years back in Iowa had become violently mentally ill, and though I’d been fortunate enough to remove myself from him, I quickly learned that being a foreign expert in China—my residential visa title—required more work than basic survival. งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีทางภาษาที่ปรากฏในการแสดงวัจนกรรมการปลอบใจของผู้พูดภาษาไทย ผู้พูดภาษาจีน ผู้เรียนภาษาไทยชาวจีน และผู้เรียนภาษาจีนชาวไทย รวมถึงการถ่ายโอนทางวัจนปฏิบัติศาสตร์จากภาษาแม่ และศึกษาปัจจัยระดับความรุนแรงของเหตุการณ์ที่มีผลต่อกลวิธีทางภาษาในวัจนกรรมการปลอบใจของผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามทั้ง 4 กลุ่ม ผู้วิจัยเก็บข้อมูลด้วยแบบสอบถามชนิดเติมเต็มบทสนทนา (DCT) จากกลุ่มตัวอย่างที่เป็นนิสิตนักศึกษาอยู่ชั้นปีที่ 3-4 ทั้งสิ้น 240 คน แบ่งออกเป็น 4 กลุ่ม กลุ่มละ 60 คน ได้แก่ ผู้พูดภาษาไทย ผู้พูดภาษาจีน ผู้เรียนภาษาไทยชาวจีน และผู้เรียนภาษาจีนชาวไทย โดยใช้ทฤษฎีวัจนกรรม วัจนปฏิบัติศาสตร์ข้ามวัฒนธรรม และวัจนปฏิบัติศาสตร์อันตรภาษาเป็นแนวคิดสำคัญ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ผู้เรียนภาษาไทยชาวจีนและผู้เรียนภาษาจีนชาวไทยใช้กลวิธีทางภาษาหลากหลายกลวิธีเช่นเดียวกับผู้พูดเจ้าของภาษาในแต่ละกลุ่ม โดยทั้งสองกลุ่มใช้กลวิธีตรงในลักษณะเดียวกับเจ้าของภาษาทั้งจำนวนและลำดับความถี่จากมากไปหาน้อย และนิยมใช้กลวิธีอ้อมการแนะนำให้ปฏิบัติมากที่สุดเช่นเดียวกับเจ้าของภาษาในแต่ละกลุ่ม อย่างไรก็ตาม แต่ละกลุ่มเลือกใช้กลวิธีทางภาษาที่แตกต่างกัน กล่าวคือ กลวิธีการอ้างถึงศาสนา พบในผู้พูดภาษาไทยและผู้เรียนภาษาจีนชาวไทย กลวิธีการอ้างถึงตำนาน สุภาษิต และเนื้อเพลงพบในผู้พูดภาษาจีน กลวิธีการอวยพรพบในผู้พูดภาษาไทยและผู้พูดภาษาจีน แต่กลวิธีการเตือนไม่พบในผู้พูดภาษาไทย ส่วนกลวิธีเสริมพบการร้องเรียกผู้ฟังให้สนใจถ้อยคำที่จะกล่าวตามมาของผู้พูดภาษาไทย คือ การเกริ่นนำ และยังพบกลวิธีเสริมที่ช่วยแสดงอารมณ์ความรู้สึกของผู้พูด ซึ่งมีลักษณะของการใช้คำลงท้าย และการใช้คำสรรพนาม ส่วนผู้เรียนภาษาไทยชาวจีนพบกลวิธีเสริมในลักษณะของการใช้คำบอกสถานภาพด้วย นอกจากนี้ ยังพบว่ารูปแบบกลวิธีร่วมมีความแตกต่างกัน คือ ผู้เรียนภาษาไทยชาวจีนนิยมใช้กลวิธีตรงร่วมกับกลวิธีอ้อมเช่นเดียวกับผู้พูดภาษาจีน แตกต่างจากผู้พูดภาษาไทยนิยมใช้กลวิธีอ้อมร่วมกับกลวิธีอ้อม ส่วนผู้เรียนภาษาจีนชาวไทยนิยมใช้กลวิธีตรงร่วมกับกลวิธีอ้อมเช่นเดียวกับผู้พูดภาษาจีน ผลการศึกษายังแสดงให้เห็นถึงการถ่ายโอนทาง วัจนปฏิบัติศาสจร์จากภาษาแม่ทั้งด้านบวกและด้านลบ และทั้งการถ่ายโอนด้านทางวัจนปฏิบัติด้านภาษาศาสตร์ (Pragmalinguistic transfer) และการถ่ายโอนทางวัจนปฏิบัติศาสตร์ด้านสังคม (Sociopragmatic Transfer) ของผู้เรียนภาษาไทยชาวจีนและผู้เรียนภาษาจีนชาวไทย ด้านปัจจัยระดับความรุนแรงของเหตุการณ์พบว่าเป็นปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อการเลือกใช้กลวิธีทางภาษาในการแสดงวัจนกรรม การปลอบใจของผู้พูดภาษาไทยกับผู้เรียนภาษาไทยชาวจีน และผู้พูดภาษาจีนกับผู้เรียนภาษาจีนชาวไทย โดยพบว่า กลวิธีทางภาษาที่เลือกใช้แตกต่างกันไปตามระดับความรุนแรงของเหตุการณ์ กล่าวคือ ทั้ง 4 กลุ่มเลือกใช้ 2 กลวิธีร่วมกันมากที่สุดในทุกระดับ ความรุนแรง แต่พบว่าคนไทย (ผู้พูดภาษาไทยและผู้เรียนภาษาจีนชาวไทย) เลือกใช้กลวิธีหลายกลวิธีร่วมกันมากกว่าคนจีน (ผู้พูดภาษาจีนและผู้เรียนภาษาไทยชาวจีน) ในทุกระดับความรุนแรงของเหตุการณ์ ซึ่งผลการศึกษานี้สอดคล้องกับสมมติฐานที่ตั้งไว้

This study examines the prevalence of gender stereotypes in outdoor advertising within an Indian satellite town, focusing on the portrayal of women and men in stereotypical gender roles. Images of outdoor advertisements were collected from the busy streets and subjected to purposive sampling for analysis. The analysis was done with critical discourse analysis and multimodal discourse analysis. The results reveal a clear endorsement of men in powerful and high-status positions, while women are consistently depicted as objects and confined to traditional roles as homemakers. The traumatic experiences of people from peripheral islands are susceptible to mnemocide. Such erasure of memory is facilitated by “defensive and complicit forgetting,” which, according to Aleida Assmann, leads to “protection of perpetrators.” My paper reflects on the vulnerability of traumas from the islands to mnemocide by looking into [1] the massacre of communists and civilians on Jeju Island, South Korea in 1948 as described in Hyun-Kil Un’s short story “Dead Silence” (2017; English trans.) and [2] the eviction of residents and indigenous people from Calauit Island, Philippines for the creation of a safari in 1976 as imagined in Annette …

The stories for children by Filipino literary master Nick Joaquin (1917-2004), when compared to his famous works, have received scant attention even though they are as masterfully written and thematically sophisticated. Out of Joaquin’s fifteen children’s stories produced between 1972 and 1983, “Gotita de Dragon” stands out for its queer tropical gothic turn. The piece is a parody of a pious legend about Saint Martha, where the titular character is on a quest to become “as big as a gothic dragon,” which subsequently renders him “in search of a virgin.” The narrative is built upon the failures of its masculine …
