The majority of Grade 4 students in the United States do not read at the proficient level. In response to this problem, which has persisted for decades, the United States Congress in 2004 mandated response to intervention as a multitiered classroom support system designed to improve reading skills for students in K-12 public schools. However, little research has been conducted about how classroom teachers use diagnostic assessments, provide small group instruction, and monitor progress in reading interventions. The Common Core State Standards recommend that all educators prepare students with the literacy skills needed for college and careers. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine 7th and 8th grade content area teachers' perspectives towards teaching literacy. The research questions addressed teachers' capabilities in the role of literacy instructor as well as the actual application of literacy. The conceptual framework included Bruner's constructivist, Bandura's self-efficacy, and Knowles's andragogy theories. There is confusion among teachers in a school district in a southeastern state about the instructional use of the state-mandated Dominie assessment for word-level reading and phonemic awareness skills for kindergarten and first-grade students. Recent assessment data indicated that 20% of students tested in kindergarten and first grade needed remediation. This study used a post-test-only control group experimental design to determine the effects of prelecture online quizzes on the students' perceived preparation and academic performance. The participants included 54 pre-service Turkish teachers of English enrolled at a state university in Turkey. The participants were randomly selected from a list and were assigned to two sections: control and experimental groups. The students in the control group were not required to take the online quizzes, while the ones in the experimental group were asked to complete the pre-lecture online quizzes. Based on a modern motivation theory of learning, self-determination theory (SDT), this study aimed to investigate the relationships between English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' motivation to speak, autonomous regulation, autonomy support from teachers, and classroom engagement, with both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The participants of the study were EFL learners from a state university in Turkey. One hundred forty-two undergraduates responded to a questionnaire about the constructs and seven of them participated in following oral interviews. A group of 16 typically developing children were selected to participate in a study determining if there is a statistically significant relationship among visual processing, inferential language, and phonemic awareness ability. All participants attended Model Laboratory school, passed a visual and hearing screening, spoke English as the primary language in their household, possessed no history of disorder or disability as evidenced by passing a developmental screener, and ranged in age from 5;4 to 6;4. Using generalizability (G-) theory and rater interviews as both quantitative and qualitative approaches, this study examined the impact of scoring methods (i.e., holistic versus analytic scoring) on the scoring variability and reliability of an EFL institutional writing assessment at a Turkish university. Ten raters were invited to rate 36 undergraduate argumentative essays first holistically and then analytically, with a three-week time interval. The quantitative results indicated that with proper rater training holistic scoring can produce as reliable and dependable assessment outcomes as analytic scoring.
