In an attempt to enhance learners' autonomy and create awareness of their own learning process, keeping a vocabulary notebook can be regarded as one of the most commonly used cognitive strategies. A jargon book, a kind of vocabulary notebook, consists of specialized terms that are used for conveying hidden meanings accepted and understood in a specific field. Researchers draw attention to the need for carrying out some studies on vocabulary notebooks to examine their effectiveness more closely. Therefore, the present study investigates the practices and perceptions of pre-service English language teachers on the strategy of keeping a jargon book. Data …

PASAA
Using generalizability (G-) theory and rater interviews as both quantitative and qualitative approaches, this study examined the impact of scoring methods (i.e., holistic versus analytic scoring) on the scoring variability and reliability of an EFL institutional writing assessment at a Turkish university. Ten raters were invited to rate 36 undergraduate argumentative essays first holistically and then analytically, with a three-week time interval. The quantitative results indicated that with proper rater training holistic scoring can produce as reliable and dependable assessment outcomes as analytic scoring. Similarly, the qualitative results revealed that all raters prefer using the holistic scoring method because it …

Effective Strategies For Teaching Vocabulary: An Introduction To Engaging Cooperative Vocabulary Card Activities, Robert Sheridan, Laura Markslag
PASAA
Despite the vast extent of the English vocabulary, it has been estimated that only around 2400 high frequency word families, which are found on Browne, Culligan, and Phillips' (2013) New General Service List (NGSL), make up over 92% of most general English texts. Several studies have shown that a word must be encountered anywhere from six (Saragi, Nation, & Meister, 1978; Rott, 1999) to 20 times (Herman, Anderson, Pearson, & Nagy, 1987) for a learner to acquire it. Unfortunately, many EFL textbooks do not adequately recycle high frequency vocabulary and learners may not have enough encounters with these critical words …

Book Review: Doing Corpus Linguistics, Supakorn Phoocharoensil
PASAA
Doing Corpus Linguistics introduces key concepts in corpus linguistics, which is now regarded as one of the most influential linguistic sub-disciplines contributing to research in applied linguistics and TESOL. Known as a reliable tool widely used in authentic language analysis, language corpora are currently integrated into various fields of language study, e.g. lexis, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, translation, sociolinguistics, language pedagogy, etc., due to the fact that corpus data often surprisingly provide new and interesting knowledge that is unavailable in non-corpus studies or native speakers' intuition (Lindquist, 2009). This book is therefore aimed at familiarizing novice researchers with fundamental …

Influence Of Technology On English Language Learners' Vocabulary, Reading, And Comprehension, Catherine Elizabeth Crum
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have shown that vocabulary development is a challenge for English Language Learners (ELLs) as they are less prepared to use contextual and linguistic clues to decode unfamiliar vocabulary. Beginning in the upper elementary grades, reading in content areas becomes lengthier and more complex. Technology-supported vocabulary instruction to teach social studies to ELLs is a relatively new concept in the 5th grade classroom. The purpose of this comparative study was to assess the vocabulary and reading comprehension outcomes of ELLs in the content area of 5th grade social studies when taught using technology-supported versus traditional textbook instruction. Mayer's cognitive theory …
