This study shows the challenges the English Language Learners face in learning reading at the Elementary level; implementing reading strategies for them; and choosing effective strategies for the students to learn reading more easily. The findings of the study show that teachers use different strategies according to the language proficiency level of the students. ELL students face challenges in communication, pronunciation, sound recognition, and vocabulary. As a strategy to overcome these challenges, the teachers emphasize learning phonics and vocabulary. Observations of three teachers in three mainstream classrooms show that teachers implement nearly similar strategies for teaching phonics and vocabulary. The …

Second language (L2) vocabulary depth, or how well learners know an L2 word (e.g., Meara, 1996), is a dimension of vocabulary knowledge that assists in L2 comprehension and production (e.g. Li & Kirby, 2014; Qian, 2002). The current study investigated the effects of two types of English L2 learning environments—formal English classrooms in Thailand and English exposure in an English-speaking country—on adult Thai speakers' (N=29) English vocabulary depth. Participants completed the Word Associates Test (Read, 1998), which measured the depth of their receptive vocabulary knowledge, and an elicitation task which required them to supply English collocations in a given context. …

This paper reports on empirical research that endeavors to investigate the role of vocabulary knowledge in the writing and speaking performance of 54 B2 level Turkish learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). The measured aspects of vocabulary knowledge (productive vocabulary size, receptive vocabulary size, and depth of vocabulary knowledge) were all found to correlate significantly with performance in writing and speaking (measured through the writing and speaking components of a proficiency test). Multiple regression analyses showed that vocabulary knowledge accounts for 26% of variance in writing performance and 17% of variance in speaking performance. Therefore, the study offers …

This thesis seeks to explore the relationship between philosophy and storytelling as grounded in their shared task of instructing readers in how to live a rich and moral life. Using a combination of narratives and the philosophical theories of Martha Nussbaum, Edward Mooney, and Iris Murdoch, I claim that philosophy and storytelling ought to be natural allies rather than territorial enemies as each reveals and attends to separate but equally important aspects of the good life in community with others. This paper gives a detailed description of the consonant system of Campidanese Sardinian and makes methodological and theoretical contributions to the study of lenition. The data are drawn from a corpus of field recordings, including roughly 400 utterances produced by 15 speakers from the Trexenta and Western Campidanese areas. Campidanese has a complex lenition system that interacts with length, voicing, and manner contrasts. We show that the semi-automated lenition analysis presented in this journal by Ennever, Meakins, and Round can be fruitfully extended to our corpus, despite its much more heterogeneous set of materials in a genetically distant language. Listening has been widely characterised as a multifaceted process encompassing a range of linguistic and psycholinguistic components (see Rubin, 1994). However, for learners at different levels of L2 proficiency, there is uncertainty over the relative importance of the various sub-skills. To address this issue, a number of linguistic and psycholinguistic sub-skills that are associated with L2 listening proficiency were selected and operationalised. The participants were thirty-six students in the tenth and eleventh grades, who were enrolled in an English class under the School-Based Management for Local Development (SBMLD) program at a local high school in Bua Yai district, Nakhon Ratchasima province. This dissertation examines how American sea writers between 1824 and 1914 promoted new perceptions of English as a various and expanding intercultural and international language. It argues that presentations of language contact form a critically underemphasized component of American nautical literature. It surveys how such presentations take shape in James Fenimore Cooper’s The Pilot (1824) and The Crater (1847), Edgar Allan Poe’s The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym (1838), and Richard Henry Dana’s Two Years before the Mast (1840).
