From the interior architecture to the furnishings and objects that inhabit it, a lived space plays an intimate role in the unfolding of daily life. Without pause or question, consistent interaction between body and space lends itself to pattern and routine. Domesticity hovers as a romantic ideal rooted in history, disparate from the present situation. When nostalgia for a domestic ideal abates, one may interact with and acknowledge a lived space anew. What does fear look like? What can photography reveal of the unconscious dimensions of terror? Working with the largest photographic archive devoted to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York City, this chapter studies the visual inscription of terror in the bodily gestures of eyewitness, gestures that were captured by citizen photographers.

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

The line separating phenomenon and science has become blurred in the investigation of ley lines. Ley lines can be described as “invisible” lines that link different places of interest and significance, either historical or geographical. This is a very loose definition, but it must remain vague, as it has to account for the various understandings of the lines. Projection (Baton Charge 1913) is based an single photograph made by Joseph Cashman (1881 – 1969) during the labour dispute known as the Dublin Lockout in 1913. Taken from a elevated point of view, Cashman’s image depicts members of the Dublin Metropolitan Police baton charge a large crowd attending a protest meeting to be addressed by trade union leader Jim Larkin on O’Connell Street on 31 August 1913. Larkin was arrested and two people were killed during the riots that followed. This photograph (along with second photograph by Cashman of Larkin addressing a crown with outstretched arms) dominates the iconography …
