Creative Nothingness: Dada As Art, Politics And Religion In Interwar Japan, James Mark Shields 2020 Bucknell University

Creative Nothingness: Dada As Art, Politics And Religion In Interwar Japan, James Mark Shields

Faculty Journal Articles

The decades immediately following the Meiji Restoration of 1868 saw Japan rapidly develop as a “modern” nation — replete with industrial technology, a powerful and sophisticated military, a burgeoning capitalist economy, a broad based educational system, and, by the early twentieth century, a massive influx of contemporary Western political, philosophical, literary and artistic ideals, including socialism, anarchism, and nearly all variations of avant-garde art and aesthetics. By the end of the Meiji period, however, with the crackdown on leftist activities in the wake of the High Treason Incident (1910–1911) and the slow but steady accretion of Japanese imperialist ideology through …

Análisis De Y Desde La Mirada En "Largo Noviembre De Madrid" Y En Otros Cuentos De Juan Eduardo Zúñiga, Elena Vega-Sampayo, Jose M. Davila-Montes 2020 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Análisis De Y Desde La Mirada En "Largo Noviembre De Madrid" Y En Otros Cuentos De Juan Eduardo Zúñiga, Elena Vega-Sampayo, Jose M. Davila-Montes

Literatures and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications

Locke’S Rebellious Progeny: Phenomenology And Ethics Of Leopardi’S A-Dialectical Materialism, Paolo Pellecchia 2020 CUNY Graduate Center

Locke’S Rebellious Progeny: Phenomenology And Ethics Of Leopardi’S A-Dialectical Materialism, Paolo Pellecchia

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

With this study I reconstruct a genealogy of the a-dialectic materialism that defines the production of 19th-century Italian author Giacomo Leopardi and with which he criticizes canonical metaphysical stances. In this regard, I consider John Locke as the first instance of a philosophical outlook that stands as an alternative to the anthropocentrism demanded by traditional metaphysics. By focusing on An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and its significant influence on Leopardi’s philosophical and aesthetic work, I emphasize how Locke’s system finds a synthetic formulation in the hypothesis, at the time highly contested yet groundbreaking, that matter might be endowed …

Describing The Dress Of Women: Author’S Notes On The Development Of Gender, Cassandra B. Tan 2020 CUNY Graduate Center

Describing The Dress Of Women: Author’S Notes On The Development Of Gender, Cassandra B. Tan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis is an examination of how authors of the late Victorian and early Twentieth Century describe the embodied and mental effects of the nature of women’s clothing through works of fiction and nonfiction. Through this analysis, I argue that clothing serves as a mechanism to oppress women by eliminating concrete and philosophical access to wealth and necessities as well as by instigating acts of violence upon a developing body through stricture and hygiene. I examine the ways that feminine dress, from youth through adulthood, shapes the way women view themselves, and in turn has a reciprocal effect on how …

The Tale Of The Old Forest: The Damaging Effects Of Forestry In J. R. R. Tolkien’S Written Works, Katrine L. A. Hjulstad 2020 University of York

The Tale Of The Old Forest: The Damaging Effects Of Forestry In J. R. R. Tolkien’S Written Works, Katrine L. A. Hjulstad

Journal of Tolkien Research

The Old Forest is more often than not considered a wholly villainous woodland, and yet in a letter to the Daily Telegraph (1972), J. R. R. Tolkien claimed that he ‘take[s] the part of trees’ in all his works. Verlyn Flieger takes issue with this claim in her essay ‘Taking the Part of Trees’, as it seems to suggest that Tolkien’s Hobbits in the Old Forest were no better than the Orcs in Fangorn. Here it is argued that Flieger’s interpretation forgets that Tolkien intended The Lord of the Rings to appear as the Hobbits’ writings and recollections, and shows …

"Saint Galadriel?: J.R.R. Tolkien As The Hagiographer Of Middle-Earth", Jane Beal PhD 2020 University of La Verne

"Saint Galadriel?: J.R.R. Tolkien As The Hagiographer Of Middle-Earth", Jane Beal Phd

Journal of Tolkien Research

Abstract: Galadriel is perceived in different, sometimes contradictory ways both within the world of Middle-earth and the world of Tolkien scholarship. In some ways, she is a liminal figure, on the threshold between Middle-earth and Valinor, and between secular and sacred influences from the primary world Tolkien actually lived in. One neglected context that may help readers to understand Tolkien’s characterization of Galadriel is the medieval cult of the saints.

The cult of the saints provides specific practices and beliefs that shaped how Tolkien consciously characterized Galadriel as saint-like, especially in terms of her beauty, holiness, and power. Her saintliness …

“Ever-Defeated Never Altogether Subdued”: Fighting The Long Defeat In Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings And Whedon's Angel, Katherine Sas, Curtis Weyant 2020 Independent scholar

“Ever-Defeated Never Altogether Subdued”: Fighting The Long Defeat In Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings And Whedon's Angel, Katherine Sas, Curtis Weyant

Journal of Tolkien Research

The theme of “the long defeat” is a well-established concept in Tolkien studies. First explicated by Tom Shippey in his book The Road to Middle-earth and based on a lament by the elf queen Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings (“Through ages of the world we have fought the long defeat”), the long defeat represents the ongoing, seemingly vain struggle of good against an apparently endless tide of evil, where even the occasional victories of the heroes are often fruitless or short lived. Throughout its five seasons, the television series Angel (1999-2004), a spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer …

Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Faulknerian Echoes and the Grotesque in McCarthy’s The Orchard Keeper (August 2020)

William Leland Haynes, B. A., Texas A&M International University

Chair of Committee: Dr. Manuel Broncano

This thesis is an exploration of Cormac McCarthy and William Faulkner’s craft through a focus on their works The Orchard Keeper and “Barn Burning.” This analysis charts the two dialoguing or conversing with each other across times through the art of their writings.

The basis of this project examines a key phrase from “Barn Burning,” where the problem of doing the right thing creates a conflict of identity within the story’s young …

Steps For Analyzing An Unreliable Narrative In Toni Morrison's Home (2012), Song Namgung 2020 Syracuse University

Steps For Analyzing An Unreliable Narrative In Toni Morrison's Home (2012), Song Namgung

International Programs

This poster provides the steps that the reader of Toni Morrison's novel needs to follow in order to cope with the unreliable narrative of Frank Money in Home(2012). Morrison discloses violence inside and outside America through the lens of Frank's first person narration. Under his self-rationalization, his desire to be part of America is buried and he confirms his superiority by marginalizing the Korean girl who is his victim.

El Peligro De Contar Historias: Un Análisis De Tu Rostro Mañana, De Javier Marías, Madison Morgan 2020 James Madison University

El Peligro De Contar Historias: Un Análisis De Tu Rostro Mañana, De Javier Marías, Madison Morgan

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

The History Of Early Modern Medicine In New Spain, El Primero Sueño, And Poet Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Daniel Hughes 2020 Hunter College of the City University of New York

The History Of Early Modern Medicine In New Spain, El Primero Sueño, And Poet Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Daniel Hughes

Grand Valley Journal of History

This essay analyzes poetry and other writing by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz in the context of themes from Greco-Roman antiquity and the historical development of medicine in seventeenth century New Spain, now Mexico. Sor Juana’s El Primero Sueño, a Spanish language poetic silva, exhibits copious references to writers from classical antiquity, including Aristotle and Ovid. Establishing a context steeped in ideas from Greco-Roman antiquity, Sor Juana invokes the medical and philosophical legacy of foundational physician Galen of Pergamon. She also expands upon his ideas into the human anatomical realm, reflecting the increased early modern prominence of …

Murmurs Of Revolution: Mythical Subversion In Dostoevsky, Connor Guetersloh 2020 Chapman University

Murmurs Of Revolution: Mythical Subversion In Dostoevsky, Connor Guetersloh

English (MA) Theses

Throughout history, revolutions have been plagued by unpredictability; it is all but impossible to know when cultural systems will be turned on their heads. Is there a common motivator, to predict social unrest bubbling beneath the surface of society? I suggest the development of this motivator is detectable by deconstructing Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic patterns within the field of rhetorical mythology. “Mythology,” in the rhetorical and linguistic sense developed by Roland Barthes, is the study of a collective system of thinking we subconsciously subscribe to when interpreting meaning, perpetuated by greater society. The struggle for meaning is split into the …

‘We Don’T Need Another Hero’ – Problematic Heroes And Their Function In Some Of Tolkien’S Works, Thomas Honegger 2020 Department of English, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Germany

‘We Don’T Need Another Hero’ – Problematic Heroes And Their Function In Some Of Tolkien’S Works, Thomas Honegger

Journal of Tolkien Research

This paper discusses the potentially problematic nature of certain forms of heroism in Tolkien’s works and their representatives, such as Túrin Turambar or Beorhtnoth. It analyses not only the problems that may arise on the battlefield from an excess of pride (ofermod), but it also investigates the problem of how to contain and deal with the more aggressive forms of military prowess when its energies are not employed on the battlefield or in fighting an adversary such as a dragon. As will be shown, Tolkien contrasts his ‘unlucky’ heroes implicitly with heroic figures such as Aragorn Elessar, who …

De La Novela Picaresca A El Chavo Del 8, Carlos Aguasaco

Publications and Research
