The dialogue within this essay serves as a response to the series, Goldfield Studies, a work itself prompted by the history and landscape of this eponymous region of Victoria, Australia. The imagery produced takes the form of paired and multiple still photographs and a digital video sequence, displayed in triple-projection. The discussion is framed by the artist’s introduction, which defines the project as a critical consideration of cultural memory in relation to the opposing perspectives of indigenous and colonial settler narratives, pastoral landscape representations, folklore and myth. We started by networking with colleges around the state and have established five new locations; 2 spaces in Snow College, 2 at Weber State, and 1 at Utah Valley University. Exhibit A is an explanation in four parts, of my attempt at knowing more about the Populus Tremulus (Aspen Tree). Eighteen months ago my experiments started shallow by painting portraits of the tree as seen in “Level One”. After six months the results were not leading my beyond surface physicality so I decided to try science. I represented this period by a white board, “Level Two”, covered in with written information about the tree collected over the last year from books, lectures, articles, professionals, botany, and environmental literature classes.

The Provost Elementary Project: Organizing And Administering Art Education In A Local Low-Income Elementary School, Katie Jahner, Daniel Barney

The purpose of this ORCA project was to give students in a local low-income elementary school the opportunity to experience a quality and interdisciplinary art education program for six weeks. Through the McKay School of Education, I was able to organize my elementary school student teaching at Provost Elementary as their sole art teacher. ORCA grant funds were used to purchase art materials that were donated to the school at the conclusion of the project.

The Garifuna are the descendents of West Africans brought to the Americas in the 1600s aboard slave ships. After a shipwreck in the Caribbean, they settled on the island of St. Vincent and mixed with the Carib Indians, creating a unique people and culture that thrived on spirituality, dance, music, language and tradition. Eventual land disputes with the British led to fierce battles, defeat and finally, deportation to the coast of Honduras. There, the Garifuna reestablished and adapted, eventually spreading along the coasts of present-day of Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Through video interviews with students across the US as well as in Great Britain, the Silent Signals project intended to create a portrait of the current university generation through documention their non-verbal communication and signals. We set out to do this through video taping, breaking down, and comparing their gestural responses to 25 questions about society, love, family, money, and education.
