An Illustrated Book On The Life Of Parley P. Pratt, Emily Becraft, Robert Barrett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The idea for this project came about as I, a descendant of Parley P. Pratt, realized I knew very little about him, his life, his family, and only a very small portion of what he contributed to the founding and history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As I gained an interest in him and his life and looked for available information on him, I realized it is at a high reading level and not easily accessible to descendants or the general church populace. As the ideas for a book to provide information about Parley P. Pratt’s …

Lithographic Collotypes, - -
Journal of Undergraduate Research
A few years ago I enjoyed a book in Special Collections and was impressed with the unique quality of it’s pictures. I found out that they were collotypes, something of which I had never heard. A year or two later a professor asked me if I was familiar with this process. I learned that collotype is a photomechanical printmaking technique that was used in the past for reproducing photographs. With the advent of automated printing machinery the manual process of collotype became too impractical for commercial purposes. However, the machines used in high-speed printing are unable to match the inherent …

On A Bridge Under A Linden Tree, Valerie Atkisson, Bruce Hixton Smith
Journal of Undergraduate Research
For my final BFA show, I proposed to display eight drawings, eight paintings, and eight ceramic sculptures unified by process and metaphor. Ultimately, I wanted the works to relate to each other in color, texture, form, line, and process. I used a combination of two metaphors, a bridge and a linden tree, to serve as the basis for the conceptual and formal elements common to all the works.

I have been looking forward to the time to report on the results of my research project. I had proposed to study the writings of Robert Burns, travel to Scotland to experience the places he lived in and wrote about, and paint those places described in his ballads and poetry. The entire process was incredibly enjoyable, not to mention educational and inspiring.

Celebrating Color, Endia Renee' Bumgarner
Theses and Dissertations
To celebrate is to rejoice, appreciate, and fully marvel. For nearly a decade I have manipulated paint and imposed upon canvas using various methods and techniques in order to invent art. However, of all that I have explored and learned, one discovery will be celebrated in my exhibits for decades to come, that is color. Color resonates with great authority. Noted scholar and artist Robert Henri said, "The value of an image rests in its constructive beauty. Its story, the fact that it is about a man, a boy, a landscape, an event which transpires, is merely incidental to its …

Marc Chagall’S Hadassah-Hebrew University Stained-Glass Windows: A Homecoming For The Durene Jews, Taliatha Palmer, Dr. Mark Magleby
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Marc Chagall was an artist keenly aware of his own historicity. He was familiar with contemporary artistic philosophies and movements as well of those of the past. Raised as an Orthodox Jew, Chagall had a firm understanding and passion for the history of Judaism and was fully cognizant of the role that he as an influential Jewish artist played in the story of his people. With this understanding of history, Chagall, upon accepting the commission in 1959 to do a series of stained glass windows for the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, conceptualized the work as a tribute to the …

Altar [Ed] Beauty—Lives Of Indian Iconography, Abraham Kimball, Robert Marshall
Journal of Undergraduate Research
During the time of colonization in India there was a lull in the production of Indian style artwork. During this time when illustrations were made they were European. When local artist were actually hired they were required to work in the prevailing European styles rather than indigenous Indian Styles (The Tamarind Papers, 11). Nevertheless, since the time of Independence Indian artists have slowly made there way back to their roots. But, with today’s onslaught of globalization I have wondered how art currently contributes to India’s social solidarity. Anciently, India’s Rajas (rulers-religious leaders) commissioned art; it functioned as a form of …

“The tool of the spirit of yesterday was the ‘academy.’ It shut off the artist from the world of industry and handicraft, and thus brought about his complete isolation from the community. In vital epochs, on the other hand, the artist enriched all the arts and crafts of a community because he had a part in its adeptness and understanding as any other worker…” These sentiments were written in the beginning of the 20th century by Walter Gropius in The Theory and Organization of the Bauhaus. The Bauhaus was a German art school that revolutionized the ideas of art verses …

Utah Quilts: Expressions Of Tradition And Innovation, Claire Dixon, Dr. Marian Wardle
Journal of Undergraduate Research
With this grant, I set out to design a quilt exhibition that would satisfy two distinct interpretations of quilts that have emerged in the last few decades. One camp, which Susan Bernick further separates into “art” quilt culture and “feminist” quilt culture, aims to elevate quilts from their folk art status because of their extraordinary design quality and because of their similarity to modern and post-modern art movements. The other camp—the less self-conscious one—consists of the average quilt makers who have at times been venerated and at times been ignored, but who have continued nonetheless in the tradition handed down …

Food and eating carry many associations. For the video installation, I wanted to portray a culture partaking of another culture’s foods. I wanted the food of one=s culture to be symbolic of the literal consuming of it. I think it is interesting how often we say, “Oh, I love Mexican food.” But how in touch are you with the culture?

The tangible result of this grant-funded research exists in two stages. The first, as proposed, is a series of paintings that will be shown on the walls of Gallery East of the College of Eastern Utah beginning in two days (September 1st) and ending a month later. The second stage consists of continuing my work on this theme during the fall semester and showing the complete body of work in a solo show at the Atrium Gallery of Salt Lake City during the month of February of next year. There are nine oil paintings ready for the Gallery East show …

The original stated purpose of this project was to produce a series of paintings using photosilkscreen processes to create working compositions by combining disparate concrete images and abstract markmaking in order to find harmony through diversity both in the combination of concrete images and in the way those images respond to abstract mark-making. I feel that this project was successful in its technical as well as aesthetic aspects.

The purpose of the research was to determine whether or not the exposure of “highbrow” art placed in “lowbrow” venues would result in an increase of awareness to all exposed. The society was to be exposed to art in a reputable venue, a “highbrow” art gallery in Scottsdale AZ. The society then was to be exposed to the art in “lowbrow” venues in the form of kitsch, for example, the art was to be printed on t-shirts, magnets, and baby quilts, these were then to be distributed throughout the community. I had desired to know whether or not those who …

As the LDS Church continues to grow and expand in developing nations throughout the world, it is presented with the unique challenge of overcoming cultural differences to create a truly global brotherhood. One of the most culturally sensitive areas that the Church must deal with is that of music. The Church=s policy in the General Handbook of Instructions is that hymns “are the basic music for Latter-day Saint meetings and are standard for all congregational singing” (p. 289). This standard applies worldwide, from Kansas to Kenya to Cambodia. The hymns used by the LDS Church are based on the Western …

Three-Dimensional Time Line, Michael Francom, Brian Christensen

Time is a constant in our lives. We are completely wrapped up in its influence. We relate everything we do to this marching enigma. Its outward markings are day and night, equinox and solstice. What separates the present from the past or the future? How does the principle of entropy relate to times passing? Does time cause us to age or does our getting old mark time? All of these questions are difficult or impossible to answer.

Journal of Undergraduate Research
Pattern design is widely popular and used throughout the world. Patterns have also been used since the beginning of time. They can be seen in blankets, clothing, rugs, and paintings throughout history. For my study of patterns I looked to an unusual resource—ancient Egypt. Egypt has had immense influence in the modern world, from architecture to fashion. But I wanted to look at Egyptian art with the focus of patterns and the purpose behind their use. Was there calculated purpose behind the use of patterns? Or were they used to merely fill up space? Did the Egyptians have a unique …
