Since its discovery in Chianciano, Etruria, the identification of the figures in the Etruscan cinerary urn Mother and Child (Fig.1) as a mourning mother holding her deceased child has gone uncontested. Reasons for this include the fact that the inscriptions do not identify the figures and the pose seems to logically fit that of a mourning mother with her dead child laid across her lap. The inconsistency of this “Mother” with other portrayals of Etruscan mothers and goddesses with children, led me to dispute the accuracy of the title of the work.

Sacred Geometry is the study of the symbolic meanings within harmonic shapes found in nature. These shapes can also be called the Platonic Solids which follow the Fibonacci Sequence known as the Golden Ratio (Fig 1). These aspects of Sacred Geometry have been studied for centuries. Today’s educational climate emphasizes test scores, often resulting in children sitting still in their seats. However, research shows that children are kinesthetic learners and that being involved in dance can improve the academic scores that society values so much. Anne Green Gilbert, an internationally renowned researcher and dance educator, asserts that dance “develop[s] neural pathways through movement patterning that are essential to language acquisition, reading readiness, and mathematical ability”. Her research further shows that “perceptual/motor ability is related to the acquisition of more complex [cognitive and social] skills.”

The legends of the white God surrounded me as I was growing up. In school I learned in Peruvian History class that more than a legend or a myth is a story that it is passed from generation to generation. This thesis investigates a technique to effectively construct and simulate costumes from a stage production Medea, in a dynamic cloth simulation application like Maya's nDynamics. This was done by using data collected from real-world fabric tests and costume construction in the theatre's costume studio. Fabric tests were conducted and recorded, by testing costume fabrics for drape and behavior with two collision objects. These tests were recreated digitally in Maya to derive appropriate parameters for the digital fabric, by comparing with the original reference. This thesis presents a method for integrating two algorithms, fractal flames and wisps, to create visually rich and interesting patterns with 3D volumetric structure. Twenty-one single 3D flame variations are described and specified. These patterns were used to produce an aesthetically designed animation, inspired by both Hubble Telescope photographs and data from a simulation of a predicted collision between the Milky Way and Sagittarius galaxies. The thesis also describes Python tools and a Houdini pre-visualization pipeline that were developed to facilitate the animation design and production.

Research in children with normal language development has shown that there is a certain order in the production and learning of pronominal forms. To one’s knowledge, there has yet to be a study on the pronoun development of Indonesian speaking children whose native language do not distinguish between the nominative-accusative form (e.g. in English, I/me – Indonesian, saya/saya) and at the same time being gender neutral (e.g. in English, he/she – Indonesian, dia/dia). The present study follows the personal pronoun development of a (Jakarta) Indonesian-speaking child from 24 months to 46 months of age.
