Long-Term Multi-Dimensional Interactive Time-Lapse Photography Using Microsoft Kinect, Daniel McCoy 2014 Clemson University

Long-Term Multi-Dimensional Interactive Time-Lapse Photography Using Microsoft Kinect, Daniel Mccoy

All Theses

In this thesis, a method is presented for the capture and interactive presentation of long-term multi-dimensional time-lapse photography. Time-lapse capture is commonly used for the observation based study of relatively long term phenomena such as plant growth and weather patterns. In terms of filmic devices, the visual time compression effect is complementary to slow motion and is nearly as prevalent. In this project, commonly available camera and computer equipment is used to capture images autonomously with minimal system supervision. A set of images is established, using long term, short interval continuous capture at a fixed position. Results are presented demonstrating …

Efficient Control Of Assets In A Modern Production Pipeline, Timothy Curtis 2014 Clemson University

Efficient Control Of Assets In A Modern Production Pipeline, Timothy Curtis

All Theses

Managing large collections of assets created in today's CG productions is no easy task. This thesis examines basic production hierarchies and identifies problems that arise without proper workflow and asset control. The possibility of hundreds of assets being created in several workflows each week creates the potential for extraordinary time waste and user error without a system to track and manage the files being produced. It is becoming increasingly necessary to utilize methods during production that enforce naming and storage standards to prevent catastrophic data loss. This thesis presents an implementation of a customized database used to track all of …

Student And Teacher Experiences With Informal Learning In A School Music Classroom: An Action Research Study, Mark C. Adams 2014 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Student And Teacher Experiences With Informal Learning In A School Music Classroom: An Action Research Study, Mark C. Adams

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Despite the ubiquitous nature of music in the lives of adolescents, school music education rarely offers experiences with the informal music making practices that are used by their favorite vernacular artists. This action research study implemented informal learning practices into the formal learning environment of my current teaching position in a rural Midwestern community, to understand more about student experiences and the educator’s role in such a classroom. The qualitative research approach used in this study borrowed from grounded theory techniques. Data collection included twenty-five total interviews with nine first-year beginning instrumentalists. Interviews were conducted in three waves, where the …

Women Of The 1913 Armory Show : Their Contributions To The Development Of American Modern Art., Jennifer Pfeifer Shircliff 2014 University of Louisville

Women Of The 1913 Armory Show : Their Contributions To The Development Of American Modern Art., Jennifer Pfeifer Shircliff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is the first comprehensive study of women’s involvement in the 1913 Armory Show as financial backers, art collectors, and artists. The Association of American Painters and Sculptors organized this seminal exhibition, which represents a pivotal change in the course of artistic developments in the early twentieth century. For the first time in American history, the public could view contemporary works of art created by both Europeans and Americans in a huge exhibition. Due to the new abstract work on display, the show sparked controversy and debates about art and challenged both American artists and collectors to reconsider artistic …

Iterations, Thomas Lowell Edwards 2014 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Iterations, Thomas Lowell Edwards

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

For millennia, pottery has facilitated the communal activities of eating and drinking. I use pottery as a placeholder, a metaphor for human interaction. The central core, the initial inspiration, of my sculpture is the diminishing level of connection our culture actively pursues.

I began to notice a trend of increasing disengagement in American culture after spending time abroad and observing the amount of time other cultures allotted for meals, coffee, etc. with companions. I make sculptures that comment on growing American disengagement using various formal principles of art (line, mass, scale, rhythm, and repetition). I am generally unsatisfied with a …

Recording The Learning Curve During The Mastery Of Glassblowing, Katie L. Corticelli 2014 University of Rhode Island

Recording The Learning Curve During The Mastery Of Glassblowing, Katie L. Corticelli

Senior Honors Projects

Fire and inspiration melted glass art’s enchanting ways into the center of my passions. Lampworking is a small-scale method of glass blowing, which is the term to refer to an art form where one shapes molten glass into a variety of items. To create glass art, propane and oxygen supply a flame torch which melts the glass. Gravity and rhythmic hands work symbiotically to shape glass rods and tubes. The result is unique three-dimensional visual art.

After years of aspiring to work with borosilicate glass, the opportunity to incorporate the endeavor with academia presented itself. Through months of time and …

Graphic Design In The United States Targeting Hispanic Consumers., Chelsea Vaal 2014 University of Louisville

Graphic Design In The United States Targeting Hispanic Consumers., Chelsea Vaal

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

One in six United States citizens (almost seventeen percent of the population) identifies themselves as Hispanic.1 As this demographic continues to grow in numbers and expand its influence on the country, it is worth exploring how to better target this audience. Many advertising and design agencies are already reaching out to U.S. Latinos, but are they doing so effectively? Although more companies are attempting to reach out to this demographic, their attempts may be unsuccessful. Understanding what makes these advertisements successful or unsuccessful can be extremely effective in determining how to better target the Hispanic market. An analysis of Hispanic …

The Accompanied Experience And The Aesthetics Of Memory, Allyson Dickerson 2014 University of Central Florida

The Accompanied Experience And The Aesthetics Of Memory, Allyson Dickerson

HIM 1990-2015

For me, a memory is the thought of a feeling. Feeling, in this case, is the appreciable radiation of sensory emanating from all objects and persons in a given moment of time. “All thought, like all feeling, is a relationship between one human being and another human being or certain objects which form a part of his universe” (Astruc). Be it an instance of attraction to another person, a place, a creation, an object, or purely an aesthetic pleasure, said instance will become ingrained as a part of an aggregation of moment-to-moment experiences that form an individual’s universe and lifetime …

Familial Dialects, Amanda King 2014 Lesley University

Familial Dialects, Amanda King

MFA in Photography and Integrated Media Theses

Using the framework of scientific investigation, ‘Familial Dialects’ explores the languages – systems of signs and codification of those signs - of individual members of my family, and the metaphors that arise from their interaction with pieces of the natural world. Each of the pieces combine an inherent form and an organizing action as a means of representing an individual’s form of expression. These familial dialects are created and translated using the methodologies of a naturalist - collection, dissection, observation, and classification. The pieces draw meaning from the connotative associations built from familial connections as well as from broader cultural …

One Way To Light A Candle, Samantha Samson 2014 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

One Way To Light A Candle, Samantha Samson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The following collection of poems represents three years of creative work in the Masters of Fine Arts-Poetry program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Meeting at the intersection of both Jewish and Queer identities, the manuscript is united by the recurring image of a candle. Candles are lit on a wide variety of Jewish occasions, from the Sabbath to the anniversary of a family member's death. They serve as a constant reminder of God's divine presence. In Jewish tradition, candles also represent the human soul, the flame reminding us of the beauty and frailty of life. Proverbs 20:27 states, …

Humanimal, April VanDeGrift 2014 Boise State University

Humanimal, April Vandegrift

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is part of a project that includes a physical body of work in which I investigate ideas about cultural narratives and hierarchies of power. I discuss how animal imagery in the stories that we tell at multiple levels in our culture has been used to communicate societal norms and rules. Thus, the paintings explore the notion of power in contemporary culture. The language of 18th and 19th century portrait painting is employed to draw a comparison between depictions of people in power and animal stereotypes. Childhood games are utilized as a way to demonstrate how social …

Awful/Awful: An Archive Of Light Embarrassments, Teysha Vinson 2014 Boise State University

Awful/Awful: An Archive Of Light Embarrassments, Teysha Vinson

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The difficulty of representing intangible religious ideas is at the core of Awful/Awful: An Archive of Light Embarrassments. Through an interest in how light is discussed in the Bible as a symbol for God and his fellowship, I make imagery that both repulses me and intrigues me but never do I get to the point where I feel the work encapsulates any answers. Instead, the photographs are questions, archived, unable to represent this light of God on their own without being trite or obtuse. The arranged work on the walls consists of these photographs plus a few ephemera from my …

Takes Dying Animals, Brittany Leigh Bronson 2014 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Takes Dying Animals, Brittany Leigh Bronson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The following collection represents three years of creative work in the Masters of Fine Arts-Fiction program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The majority of these stories operate in the realm of the surreal with comic and farcical leanings. All of the characters portrayed deal with death in some way--whether it a parent, a marriage, an animal, or a friend--and each cope their loss by pushing grief to the periphery, often masking it with humor or denial, until the story requires them to consciously confront it. These stories should not be considered finished work, but as a summation of …

The Saga Of Bob And Carson, Joshua R. Holley 2014 East Tennessee State University

The Saga Of Bob And Carson, Joshua R. Holley

Undergraduate Honors Theses

I expanded a ten-minute play that I had written in my sophomore year, Bob and Carson on a Couch, into six ten-minute plays. Each play can stand on it's own to be performed, or they can be done in order to tell one story.
