It Begins With You And Me, Sea A Joung
Graduate School of Art Theses
This thesis conceptualizes the conditions of the Korean division, including the realization of the political and cultural gap between North and South Korea, lack of education about the Korean division and the role of media. The Korean War, also known as the “Forgotten War,” is erased from the consciousness of contemporary societies. This thesis describes a history about how the artificial division created during the Korean War continuously affects the lives of modern Koreans. For more than sixty years, North and South Korea did not have any form of communication except through government negotiations and regulated media. As a result, …
The Disinheritance Of Power,

The Disinheritance Of Power, Jared Stein
Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted
Patriarchy as a system of cultural organization is entering a new period of existence where the notion of masculine predominance is challenged and the power of maleness is redressed. This shift is extremely slow and just begun, but felt nonetheless by men. Masculine identity has long been dependent on patriarchy for definition. Modern masculinity, shaped by the tenants of patriarchy, emphasizes the power of the masculine over the feminine and perpetuates the supposedly inherent entitlement of the male condition. As cultural power is rebalanced the inherited power of masculinity will diminish. The inheritance of power that has allowed men to …

Bodies In Space, Nancy Congrove
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Looking to ritual, costuming, and drag, while still using traditional craft processes, my practice reflects imagery from my own narrative with inspiration from history and counterculture movements. I am interested in creating environments and costumes that reference the function and architecture of the body, especially when thinking about interior spaces.

Inner Sound: Contemporary Abstract Photography In The Wet-Plate Collodion Process, Brian Barger
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
My work is Neo-Romantic in nature. This description implies a rejection of all that is tedious, mundane, and ugly in the modern world, in favor of looking to history, nostalgia, and mystery for inspiration. I intend for the work to be dreamlike and evocative of fantasy, to be poetic rather than prosaic, and to be beautiful rather than purposeful.
To this end, I am investigating abstraction in photography through the use of the wet-plate collodion process. The work is intended to reference spirituality and the subconscious, through the use of the abstraction of nature and natural forms, using the inherent …

The Misconception Of Knowing, The Invention Of Time; Curiosities & Introspections Of Vernacular Photography, Patricia D. Drummond
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The Misconception of Knowing, the Invention of Time; Curiosities & Introspections of Vernacular Photography is a body of work that combines photography, artist books, and alternative processes in a series of pieces that explore the synergy between the act of creating vernacular or common photography, the photograph in its many forms, and the interaction with the photographic image at all the stages of its existence. It also exists in conjunction with this written monograph, which supports and gives insight into the work. Through the use of poems, sketchbook musings, the history of photography, critical theory and social norms within photography, …

Immersion, Jennifer M. Tremblay
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The focus of this paper is on a body of work created between 2014 and 2015. This series, titled Immersion, deals with the pollution of a local body of water, Blacks Run, and with my own bodily illnesses that occurred during this time period. Using large-scale cyanotypes, video, and large format photography I explore the attitudes that lead to environmental pollution and reference my own struggle with depression and anxiety.
My work examines traditional gendered views of the landscape and female figure, and the intersections and interactions between these two ‘bodies’. By using my illness as a way to …

Unmonumental Moment, Amy Holbein
Graduate Theses
This thesis statement investigates the coexistence of joy with grief, light alongside darkness, and the intersection of the divine with the ordinary, as they express themselves in my thesis “Unmonumental Moment.” In it, painting merges with sculptural forms to create a three-dimensional work that addresses the idea of duality. The exhibit is marked by the on going common elements in my work, namely the use of a saturated color palette, the incorporation of papier-maché with everyday detritus, dream imagery, and portals alluding to a parallel spiritual world. This statement analyzes the thesis components and examines them in light of art …

Vulnus, Charlotte Ashley Coolik
Graduate Theses
This thesis statement is a reflection on my thesis installation work, Vulnus: Wanna’ Go for a Ride Little Girl?, The Shack, and My Tara. This statement describes the background motivation, influences, and processes that led to its completion. Vulnus originates from the Latin meaning wound or injury. The Vulnus body, a trinity of dollhouses transformed by found objects, comprises the constructed assemblage. As an artist employing precision placement and thereby composing miniature theatrical tableaus, I weave a theme in this triptych. Vulnus represents memories of vulnerability, danger, and trauma. Vulnus embodies found objects that speak of people’s lives. Items and …

Graduate Theses
This statement outlines the theoretical, historical, and conceptual influences that shape my Master of Fine Arts thesis at Winthrop University. It further describes and analyzes the series of paintings that compose my thesis Equilibrium, each one a reflection of my aesthetic experience as I evolved as an artist. As I will illustrate, the aesthetic experiences reflected in my work are intertwined with the artist or movement that inspired me at the time. The series consists of seven large-scale, abstract paintings, where I explore balancing form, shape, and color. In this thesis statement, I am asserting my progression as an evolving …

Metaphors, Dean Mobley
Graduate Theses
This statement analyzes and reflects upon my Master of Fine Arts thesis exploration of material collision as a metaphor of my life experiences. The thesis exhibition, entitled “Equilibrium”, consists of six sculptural works constructed in glass, wood, metal, and repurposed heavy industrial objects. Within each individual piece I selected materials that would, when forced together under pressure and intense heat, bring attention to the utilization and exploitation of their inherent qualities. The manipulation of these material qualities has enabled me to express the complexity of human emotion. I am confident that all materials can convey certain emotional properties. During the …

Standing Still,

Standing Still, Young Tseng Wong
CGU MFA Theses
I am drawn to the in-between — to movement at the corners of the eyes, to the moments between one breath and the next. When we want to catch such moments we stand still, we pause, we wait, "with bated breath." At such moments, I believe, the potential exists for taking on different perspectives and for finding other points of view.
Standing still, in a state of stillness, is an action that encapsulates many of my concerns. My work takes form in objects and architecture that collaborate with bodies moving inside them. The space is structured, not as a system, …

My thesis and the corresponding exhibition will look at contemporary artists, specifically Jen Davis, Lauren Greenfield, Leslie Lyons and Licia Priest, who examine and oppose the negative effects that art and pop culture have had on perceptions of the female body and, especially, on women’s perceptions of their own bodies. Focusing on the last three decades, I will contextualize my exhibition by examining art historical and feminist texts that analyze representations of female bodies. My project will be informed by contemporary psychological and sociological studies of women’s attitudes towards their bodies: Joan Brumberg’s The Body Project, Naomi Wolf’s The Beauty …

Traces Of The Hand., Molly F. Passafiume 1989-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This body of work, titled “Traces of the Hand,” consists of a series of mixed media pieces that are made up of one or more clay forms that act as vessels to contain handmade paper. Each piece is a cross section or artifact that I created through abstraction and repetition. The clay acts as a frame for preserving these artifacts. The paper is arranged in a manner which abstracts natural patterns that mimic each other: the flow of water, the grain of wood, the strata of rocks, and the swirls of fingerprints. Each individual work captures and enhances a natural …
