Constructing The Christian: Agency And Emulation In Old English Poetry, Jennifer Ross 2011 Columbus State University

Constructing The Christian: Agency And Emulation In Old English Poetry, Jennifer Ross

Theses and Dissertations

Old English religious verse - born out of a productive fusion between pre-existing Germanic ideals and Christian value-systems brought to England at the end of the sixth century - grapples energetically with the question of how people ought to live morally upright lives pleasing to God. In Beowulf, Judith, Juliana, and The Dream of the Rood, a model for the believer/God relationship is constructed from a common pattern of the Germanic thane/lord relationship, but, like garments cut from the same cloth by different tailors, each poem crafts its subject differently. Still, each is constructed around a …

Pomp And Circumstances: A Film, Danielle Melissovas Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

Since this is a thesis project about film, I thought it appropriate to acknowledge wellknown films about film in my chapter titles. In their own way, each of these films enhance audiences' understanding of the film industry and the creative and technical skills required in filmmaking. Writing about making my own film has had a similar effect on me because it has made me more aware of my choices and expectations about the film, as well as the collaboration that made it all possible. My thesis project began with a desire to experience every stage of the independent filmmaking process: …

A Stabbing In Chawton, Jane Austen, And Emma, Jill Durey

Research outputs 2011

The article discusses a stabbing that is mentioned in a letter by the novelist Jane Austen. The event took place in Chawton, England in March 1814 and involved Stephen Mersh (b. 1796), who was allegedly stabbed by James Baigen, who was later acquitted of the crime. Details about Mersh's life are presented. Information is also included about Sir Thomas Miller, who represented Chawton in Parliament from 1806-1816 and the Honorouble William Wickham, who was an acquaintance of Austen's brother. Baigen, it is noted, committed suicide in 1851 after the death of his father forced the family to move away from …

Rebel Discords: George Meredith's Metrical Art, Jason Wayne Johnson 2011 University of Mississippi

Rebel Discords: George Meredith's Metrical Art, Jason Wayne Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

George Meredith is perhaps best known for his innovative contributions to the Victorian novel. Unfortunately, his formal experiments in poetry have gone unnoticed. This dissertation seeks to rectify this problem by examining Meredith's metrical art and the ways in which he departs from the metrical tradition. The first chapter of the study evaluates his early poetry, most of which is derivative and metrically conventional. Despite. Only two poems are considered prosodically innovative, “The Death of Winter” and “South-west Wind in the Woodlands.” The second chapter discusses Meredith's experiments with the sonnet tradition, particularly as they relate to his most famous …

Corp(Se)Ocracy: Marketing Death In Margaret Atwood's Oryx And Crake And The Year Of The Flood, Sarah A. Appleton

English Faculty Publications

Margaret Atwood's novels of speculative fiction Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood articulate a currently possible future world of corporate control marked by profitable practices of death. Narrated by both individuals of privilege and also of the underclass, the novels reveal insidious systems of self-perpetuating diseases and cosmetic enhancements that ultimately bankrupt or kill the consumers. As the state is policed by CorpSECorps, the corporate security forces, individuals have very little protection or recourse, and groups such as God's Gardeners, conservationists who resist consuming the corporate products, are in danger of annihilation. Yet when humanity is destroyed …

The Lady Of The Lake And Chivalry In The Lancelot-Grail Cycle And Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur, Amanda Marie Ewoldt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the Lady of the Lake as an active chivalric player in the thirteenth century Lancelot-Grail Cycle (also known as the Prose Lancelot) and in Thomas Malory's fifteenth-century Le Morte Darthur. To study the many codes of chivalry, particularly in regard to women, I use two popular chivalric handbooks from the Middle Ages: Ramon Lull's Book of Knighthood and Chivalry, Geoffroi de Charny'sKnight's Own Book of Chivalry. Traditionally, the roles of women in medieval chivalry are passive, and female characters are depicted as objects to win or to inspire knights to greatness. The Lady of the Lake, I …
