Censorship Concerns In College Media: A Multiple Case Study Analysis On The Silencing Of Student Journalists, Haley Nicole Matlock 2021 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Censorship Concerns In College Media: A Multiple Case Study Analysis On The Silencing Of Student Journalists, Haley Nicole Matlock

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The aim of this qualitative study was to conduct a multiple case study that provides an analysis of censorship concerns at campus newspapers affiliated with public, four-year universities. Eighteen individuals from seven institutions participated in interviews. Interviewees consisted of former and current student journalists and advisers who worked at university publications where allegations of censorship have occurred within the last decade. The Student Press Law Center routinely investigates claims of censorship and provides pro bono legal counsel to student journalists (Zagier, 2011). While courts commonly sided with students in disagreements regarding free speech, Hazelwood v Kuhlmeier (1988) scaled back freedoms …

The Covid Crisis In Legal Education, Indiana University Bloomington. Center For Postsecondary Research

AALL Legal Website of the Month

Legal education has been challenged, and the LSSSE Annual Report reveals that while the core of legal education remains relatively unchanged, the “intangibles” of law school learning were certainly affected. Above all, the data show unequivocally that our students have been in crisis. Students have struggled to meet their basic needs, with troubling percentages reporting increased worries about housing, financial instability, and even food insecurity. While most made efforts to build relationships with faculty, staff, and classmates, their overall quality of life declined along with opportunities for academic engagement and professional development. The pandemic is a wake up call for …

Lawyers make mistakes. Read a transcript (your own or that of someone else) or a news media account, go to court and watch, or just learn about it when a colleague describes a trial—with insight and an acknowledgment of missteps or hubris and a peacock display of self-adjudged skill. They are mistakes of omission or commission, but they occur every day. The checklist movement—adapting the checklist model used by surgeons and airplane pilots—is a critical tool for error reduction and elimination and has its place in law.* But beyond granular details that must be checked and double-checked for a particular …

What We Do: The Life And Work Of The Legal Writing Professor, David I.C. Thomson

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The life of the legal writing professor in today’s law schools is a challenging yet rewarding one. Out of necessity, over the last thirty years the pedagogy of legal writing has expanded to include much more than just writing skills—it has become every law student’s introduction to a broad set of basic lawyering skills and is more appropriately styled the Lawyering Process (LP). The increasing gravity and responsibility of the Lawyering Process course has led to expansion of credits given to the course and gradually to greater status and equity to the faculty who teach it, although most of us …

Becoming Global Lawyers? A Comparative Study Of Civic Professionalism, John Bliss 2021 University of Denver

Becoming Global Lawyers? A Comparative Study Of Civic Professionalism, John Bliss

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Through their professional education and training, new lawyers are generally encouraged to adopt a civic vision of professional identity. This article explores convergences and diverges in how new lawyers entering an increasingly globalized legal profession conceive of their civic roles in different national contexts. In particular, I examine corporate lawyers-in-training in the U.S. and China, drawing on interviews and a cross-cultural identity mapping method to compare their accounts of the lived experiences of civic professionalism. I find that professional identity formation in the U.S. sample is largely marked by role distancing and a sense of constrained public-interest expression. In contrast, …
