You might think ChatGPT would not work well to assist students in a law school class on Contract Drafting. The model was not created for that purpose and it has no legal training. But you would be wrong. There are deficiencies but they can easily be compensated for. A student who knows what they are doing can use the model to do the work for a drafting class. As a result, law professors who teach Contract Drafting need to understand how to use ChatGPT, and how effective it can be as a drafting tool. And we also need to think …

This Article addresses a question asked by many law students concerned about our flawed criminal legal system: should they become a prosecutor in an office run by a progressive prosecutor, or a public defender in an office devoted to zealous, client-centered (or holistic) defense? The Article starts with an anecdote about Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner’s road show to recruit law students and young lawyers, and then proceeds as follows: First, this Article makes the case for progressive prosecution; then, it makes the case for zealous indigent defense; then, it identifies the obstacles and challenges for both kinds of lawyers …

A Review Of The 2022/23 International Moots Season, Siyuan Chen

This is the ninth annual review of Singapore’s performance in international moot court competitions. The preceding season (2021/22) had set a high bar, considering that Singapore law schools took the top two spots in the NICA Law School Rankings. The NICA rankings are based on how law schools throughout the world perform in various international moots, with points weighted according to the scale of the competition. With six championships (including two Grand Slams) as well as a third championship final appearance in the Jessup, SMU took top spot in the NICA rankings for the second time in its history.

Context At The Periphery: The Rise Of The Critical-Contextual Legal Education Reform Movement, Cara R. Shaffer

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that legal education must reform by integrating critical-contextual approaches to address declining critical thinking skills and better prepare students for contemporary legal practice. It emphasizes the need to move beyond the traditional Langdell case method, which separates doctrinal learning from practical and contextual understanding, and highlights the importance of interdisciplinary perspectives in legal training.

What Do Law Professors Believe About Law And The Legal Academy?, Eric H. Martinez, Kevin Tobia

Legal scholarship is replete with debates about competing legal theories: textualism or purposivism; formalism or realism; natural law or positivism; prison reform or abolition; universal or culturally specific human rights? Despite voluminous literature about these debates, great uncertainty remains about which views experts endorse. This Article presents the first dataset of American law professors’ views about legal theory. A study of over six hundred law professors reveals expert consensus and dissensus about dozens of longstanding debates.

How do business lawyers create value? For nearly forty years, scholars have conceptualized the business lawyer as a “transaction cost engineer” who helps contracting parties efficiently break negotiation stalemates to create more valuable deals. This theory provides meaningful insights about sophisticated corporate law practice, where outside lawyers parachute in to make one-off deals happen. However, it fails to explain the behavior of startup lawyers, who develop long-term relationships with their clients and counsel them on seemingly routine matters, well before a major transaction materializes.
