What Ed Cooper Has Taught Me About The Realities And Complexities Of Appellate Jurisdiction And Procedure, Catherine T. Struve
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
In this brief essay, I will describe some of what I have learned from Ed Cooper as a fellow participant in the rulemaking process and as a coauthor of two volumes of his Federal Practice and Procedure treatise. To describe everything that Ed has taught me would require much more than the length of this essay. So instead, I will try to offer some representative examples-or, as Ed might say, some "sketches." Because others will discuss Ed's expert guidance of the Rules Committees' consideration of key issues concerning the Civil Rules, my discussion of Ed's scholarship and reporting work will …

Matthew Hale stands along with Edward Coke and John Selden as one of the major lawyers of seventeenth-century England. Holdsworth said of Hale: "His character and talents made him easily the greatest lawyer of his day [and] the most scientific jurist that England had yet seen." Holdsworth also recognized him as the greatest common lawyer since Coke and as a lawyer superior to Coke.' The purpose of this short article is to acknowledge the four-hundredth anniversary of his birth and provide a short summary of the major events in his life along with a bibliography of books written by him …

“Professionalism.” This is a word that will always be associated with Justice Carrico—not only because he was a consummate professional himself, but also because he was dedicated to assuring that all lawyers understood the full ethical, social, and behavioral implications of their role as lawyers. Under his leadership, Virginia became the first state to require all newly-admitted lawyers to take a day-long course in professionalism. It is a model that has been widely emulated around the country.

In Reimagining Equality: Stories of Gender, Race, and Finding Home, author Anita Hill explores some of the literal and figurative meanings of "home," focusing specifically on African-American women in their quest for home. Hill layers discussions of law, literature, and culture with stories of individual women, both historic and contemporary. In Reimagining Equality, Hill takes on a topic clearly distinct from the Clarence Thomas Senate confirmation hearings, the episode for which she is best known. Her work here is, nonetheless, evocative of her struggle in those hearings, because the book addresses the interrelation between gender, race, place, space, …

I want to welcome back Justice Ginsburg to Columbia Law School. She has been a frequent visitor since her time here as a student in the late 1950s and again as a member of our faculty in the 1970s. I know she knows, but it is worth reiterating that she always has a home here at Columbia.
